The 2017 Bolgheri Rosso is a rich, explosive wine that embodies all of the natural richness and opulence of the year. Black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, plum, mocha, licorice, spice, leather and menthol burst from the glass in this exuberant, flamboyant red. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2017 possesses tons of intensity and volume in all of its dimensions. This is an especially heady wine, even by Bolgheri standards, and that is saying a lot! And yet all the elements are so well balanced.

Le Macchiole’s 2018 Bolgheri Rosso will give readers a very good idea of the vintage in Bolgheri. Fresh, fruity and impeccable in its balance, the 2018 is a model of understatement. What it lacks in classic Bolgheri opulence, it more than makes up for with its gracious personality and overall appeal.

Le Macchiole's 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is bright, effusive and so alluring. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of red/purplish berry fruit as this silky, mid-weight red shows off its undeniable charm. The interplay of Bolgheri radiance with the approach at Le Macchiole today, that seeks greater energy in the wines than in the past, is so incredibly appealing.

The Le Macchiole 2020 Bolgheri Rosso is 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerhouse wine that has become a steady little engine for the estate economy, growing from a production of 36,000 bottles to 140,000 bottles made annually today. This vintage does a terrific balancing act with dark fruit and concentration on the one hand and an accessible easy-drinking personality on the other. Black fruit cedes to baked brioche, spice and toasted aniseed. The wine finishes for 10 months in a combination of second, third and fourth-year barrique, and about 30% of the total goes into cement. The finish is polished and fresh, and you get good value.

The 1994 Messorio is an unbelievable wine with which to begin this tasting. The aromatics alone are profound. Espresso, mocha, grilled herbs, menthol sweet tobacco and spices are just some of the nuances that waft from the glass in this sublime, totally spellbinding wine. The 1994 is at an intersection where a classic sense of structure meets Maremma warmth, yielding a wine of extraordinary class. The oak is beautifully integrated, and everything about this wine is first-rate. In 1994 Le Macchiole produced just two barrels of Messorio. Odds are I will never get to taste the 1994 again, but I will always remember the time I spent with this bottle. The 1994 is simply unforgettable and an unreal achievement for a wine in its first vintage. Readers fortunate enough to still own bottles are in for a treat.

The 2008 Messorio is simply marvelous in this vintage. Layers of dark fruit take shape beautifully in the glass as this reticent Messorio shows off its pedigree. The 2008 is a decidedly inward wine that, once again, stands apart from some recent vintages. The 2008 is a mid-weight, refined Messorio endowed with tons of balance and sheer finesse. It will be a fascinating wine to follow in the coming years. The 2008 Messorio was aged for 14 months in the standard French oak barrique (75% new), a move away from the smaller barrels that had been used in past years.

The 2010 Messorio boasts stunning depth and richness. Over the last few months, the 2010 has found a new level of finesse that wasn't apparent earlier this year. Hints of dark cherry, plum, cloves and tar flesh out on the huge, powerful finish. Although the 2010 is years away from offering its finest drinking, its class and personality are impossible to miss. The 2014 Messorio is another very pretty and expressive wine from Le Macchiole. The 2014 has lovely mid-palate density, especially for the year, along with a decidedly exotic passion fruit/apricot quality that will only grow as the wine continues to develop in bottle. I expect the 2014 starts to drink well relatively early, but it also has enough freshness and balance to hold for a number of years. Hints of truffle, raspberry jam, blood orange and spice infuse the layered, creamy finish.

The 2019 Messorio marries the natural opulence of Merlot on the Tuscan Coast with a feeling of finesse I don’t think I have ever seen here before. There is plenty of depth and resonance, but none of the heaviness that was so in vogue for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice, mocha and lifted floral notes build into the racy, exotic finish.

Fine, silky tannins provide the backdrop for the 2010 Paleo Rosso, a wine that captivates for its exquisite, graceful personality. Sweet, perfumed aromatics jump from the glass, followed by dark notes of red and black stone fruit, melted road tar, spices and espresso, all woven together in a fabric of pure class. The 2010 boasts stunning depth and volume, but is never heavy. All the elements are simply in the right place, but readers will need to give the tannins a few years to soften a bit further.

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

    The Wine Independent (98)

The 2019 Le Macchiole Paleo included for the first time grapes from the Ulivino vineyard. This 2.7 ha vineyard, on the northern border of Bolgheri was planted in 2015. At 70 meters above sea level it is really a little hill, surrounded by forest and facing the sea. The Cabernet Franc is planted on an east/west exposure and Le Macchiole feel these grapes will add more power and freshness to the wine. It starts off with youthful, creamy, exotic spice and incense-like notes of oak, but underneath there is a lovely, leafy, raspberry note that is very distinctively Cabernet Franc. There is a beautiful, precise quality to the fruit, with dark berries, licorice, quinine notes and a very long finish. Like the 2016, this 2019 feels quite classical in style but it feels even more refined with firm but fine tannins.

A riot of pepper lights up the nose, from cracked black to green peppercorn to hot chili. Flint and leather undertones empower the heat, while aromas of raspberry jam and vanilla provide balance. The palate stays spicy, with snappy, confident acidity, but a sweetness lingers, and a finish of chili and chocolate ties everything together. Transcendent. Drink 2030–2040 or beyond.

An exquisite bottle expressing the apex of Italian viticulture, the Le Macchiole Scrio 1994 is a commanding embodiment of Tuscan wine-making prowess. Crafted in the famous vineyards of Bolgheri, renowned for its fertile soils and remarkable microclimate, this wine is a pure expression of Syrah, a grape varietal traditionally linked with French Rhône Valley, yet beautifully adapted here.

Le Macchiole, the producer, implements stringent selection and low yields to retain quality and concentration. Fermented in steel and aged for 18 months in French oak, the Scrio 1994 offers a rich tapestry of blackberry, liquorice, and finely toasted spices, underpinned by an earthy minerality and characteristic Tuscan meatiness. With velvety tannins and a long, alluring finish, it's a monumental red promising a sensory voyage.

Appealing to discerning collectors and Syrah lovers, the Le Macchiole Scrio 1994 is a testament to the transformative prowess of Tuscan wine-making in the hands of a devoted producer.

The 2003 Scrio (100% Syrah) is another terrific effort from Le Macchiole. Packed with clove, cinnamon, sweet dark fruit, toasted oak and mint notes, it is opulent and concentrated yet light on its feet, boasting extraordinary length and an eternal finish defined by a lingering note of sweetness. It, too, has improved considerably over the last few months and there is plenty of fruit to balance the tannins of the vintage. Simply put, it is a knock-out effort from this very challenging harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015.

The 2012 Scrio is a unique and dare I say atypical expression of Syrah. The bouquet presents big intensity with cola, balsam herb and licorice. At the back are tones of tar, Teriyaki sauce and barbecue smoke. I don't think I have ever tasted a Syrah quite like this. It shows a level of balsam intensity that I have never previously encountered. The bouquet glows with Tuscan sunshine.

This is very complex, offering tobacco, brown sugar, black olives and currants. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and layered, with very fine tannins and a long, structured finish. Hints of new wood complement the long, cool fruit and phenolics. Give this three or four years to open. Try after 2025.

The 1999 Paleo Rosso is beautifully fresh and vibrant to the core. Freshly cut flowers, licorice, plums, tobacco and spices all jump from the glass. Refined, silky tannins from the long growing season support the bracing finish. The 1999 is a wine built on precision. Even after all these years, there is plenty of finesse. This is the first vintage that includes a significant amount of Cabernet Franc, foreshadowing what Paleo will become just two years later.

The 2006 Scrio (Syrah) is a rich, intense wine loaded with ripe dark fruit and plenty of toasted oak. With time in the glass the wine’s signature floral, minty notes gradually emerge, yet this remains a vibrant, youthful Scrio in need of serious bottle age to integrate its oak. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
