    Mauro Veglio

    About Mauro Veglio

Situated in the hamlet of Cascina Nouva, near the sinuous road that winds down from La Morra, Azienda Agricola Veglio was founded in the 1960supon Angelo Veglio’s purchase of his first vines in Gattera. Over the following decades, the Veglio estate has slowly and organically grown stronger and more influential throughout the region, with holdings acquired via marriage, relocation and alliances...

1979 saw the family move to their present home in Cascina Nouva, which was accompanied by five hectares of vines, including holdings in the crus Arborina and Rocche dell’Annunziata. At the young age of 25, Mauro Veglio was handed the reins of the estate in 1986. A year later, the young Veglio married his wife Daniela, herself a member of a proud vinous Piedmonte family. This union brought some exceptional holdings in Castelletto under the Veglio umbrella.

In 2017, a family alliance with Mauro’s nephew Alessandro – already running his own winery – brought a further five hectares in Gattera (the ancestral Veglio home) and Paiagallo. As we know it today, Alessandro manages a 19-hectare estate, with parcels of vines spanning the length and breadth of this beautiful region. Stylistically, one need only look across the road from Veglio’s winery to that of the legendary modernist Elio Altare, a name with which a great many collectors will be familiar, who Mauro has cited as a strong influence in his early days.

Alessandro, however, is now the Veglio in charge, and there have already been notable alterations to the wine in his very first vintage. Not wishing, by any means, to totally disregard the incredible work of his uncle, there is merely a greater flexibility and youthful energy underpinning that sensational Veglio sprezzatura. Lighter on extraction, the wines are aged in larger oak barrels for a fresher fruit profile of brightness and purity– this immediate and important change of approach is especially welcome given the stunning single-cru cuvées crafted by Alessandro, which are able to convey their terroir and sense of place with greater transparency.
