    Monbousquet

A classic Saint-Emilion estate dating to the 16th century, this chateau has been producing its eponymous wine since the 1800s. The modern day has seen the consultancy of Michel Rolland improve the standing of the property and the quality of the wine immensely. A stablemate of Chateau Pavie, Monbousquet was elevated to Cru Classe status in 2006.

The 1998 Monbousquet is medium to deep garnet-brick in color with wonderful dried mulberries, kirsch and prune preserves notions with hints of cigar box, Chinese five spice and potpourri plus a waft of liquid licorice. Medium-bodied, it's very spicy with a wonderful core of plum and cherry preserves and beautifully plush tannins, finishing very long and spicy. Delicious now and should age a further 10 to 15+ years!

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)

Saturated dark ruby. Superripe, compellingly sweet aromas of blackberry and melting chocolate, with very subtle oakiness. Lush, chewy and rich, with the powerful berry, cherry, mineral and chocolate flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Seems somehow finer than past vintages of this wine, with a particularly aromatic aftertaste. The ripe tannins coat the entire palate.

Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Monbousquet slides effortlessly out of the glass with seductive notes of baked plums, blackberry compote and dried mulberries plus hints of espresso, black olives and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is firmly structured with chewy tannins and lively acidity framing the Rubenesque fruit, finishing long and savory.

This is a bold wine, full of structure and dense tannins. It has layers of black fruits, juicy acidity and a ripe, chocolate-coffee character. This producer is now producing great wines with richness and concentration.

Lushly fruited, with creamy boysenberry and plum preserve flavors gliding through, this is going to be for the hedonist crowd. Extra anise and spice notes fill in, revealing steady grip through the finish.

Seemingly a perpetual smoking wine as well as a great value, the 2020 Château Monbousquet is no exception and has a deep, inky hue to go with pure, rich, powerful notes of smoky black fruits, chocolate, scorched earth, and subtle floral nuances. It’s a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, even tannic, yet pleasure-bent beauty I’d be thrilled to drink any time over the coming 15+ years. The blend is 70% Merlot and 15% each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the alcohol is 14.6% with a pH of 3.75.
