The 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin was cropped at just 27hl/ha. Now with 21 years on the clock, atypical for this vintage, it has a sensual bouquet with scents of red fruit, cassis, quince and violet, though with continued aeration it develops a subtle earthiness. The palate is marked by very fine tannin, well judged acidity and quite a structured second half. This is still quite backward, but there is something very stylish here and for those with extraordinary patience it may well blossom...eventually! Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2005 Ruchottes-Chambertin is the highlight of recent vintages. It has a brilliant nose that is endowed with astonishing precision, far more than previous vintages with mineral-rich cassis and red cherry fruit, later a hint of oyster shell. Crystalline is the word that springs to mind. The palate is symmetrical in terms of its balance, armed with filigree tannin, show-stopping purity and a satin-like finish that takes your breath away. Is there a touch of stem addition on the end? I don't care. This is a gold-plated fabulous wine. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2009 Ruchottes-Chambertin was 100% de-stemmed. It has a gorgeous bouquet with vivid scents of plush red cherry fruit, cassis, violets and a hint of vanilla remaining from some new oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with an elegant, precise opening. It is embroidered with a perfect thread of acidity and gains momentum towards the finish that feels plush and sensual (not a million miles away from the 1999 stylistically). It needs three or four more years in bottle but there is great potential here. Tasted at the Ruchottes-Chambertin vertical in London.

The 2010 Ruchottes-Chambertin is pure silk on the palate. Freshly cut roses, raspberries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. In 2010, the Ruchottes is rich, yet weightless, in the way only Burgundy can be. All the elements are beautifully woven together in this totally gracious, striking wine. This parcel is over 60 years old. The Mugneret sisters aren't in favor of using the Vieilles Vignes designation for the wines, as that term has no formal definition. The old vines go into Ruchottes, the young vines into the 1er Cru.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Despite some reduction, there is clearly plenty of attractive ripe red berry fruit on the nose of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Ruchottes-Chambertin 2011: cranberry, wild strawberry and touches of blueberry. The palate is less masculine and reserved compared to when I tasted it at the domaine at the end of 2013. Here it feels more velvety on the entry. It has a cashmere texture with well-judged acidity and superb structure. The fruit is darker than Christophe Roumier's Ruchottes, but there is very good weight and persistence on the finish that bodes well for the future.

The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Pure and sensual on the nose, replete with that breath-taking clarity, it dares to show more fruit intensity than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant from DRC served blind alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries and crushed stone, very mineral-driven with a wonderful, linear finish that is saving fireworks for those with the nous to age this another four or five years. Brilliant. Tasted blind at 67 Pall Mall in London.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing some quality new oak on the nose that still needs to be subsumed. It is tightly coiled but it just needs time because there is freshness, definition and beguiling complexity locked in here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well judged acidity and clever use of new oak lending body without compromising terroir expression. The finish feels focused and satisfying and the texture leaves you totally seduced. Class, class, class. Tasted September 2016.

The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was also showing very well indeed from bottle, revealing a lovely bouquet of wild berries, spicy forest floor, dark chocolate and wild rose. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a bright core of fruit and a bright line of animating acidity, concluding with a mineral finish. Having escaped the year's frosts, this was cropped at more normal yields than the Clos Vougeot and Echezeaux, so it's no surprise it is more charming but less concentrated than those two special wines.

The 2018 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is matured in 70% new oak. It has a broody, introspective nose at first, but there is a sense of nascent intensity as it gradually unfurls in the glass, revealing raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed limestone aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers supple, pliant tannins. Quite saline in the mouth, with admirable density and complexity on the mineral-rich finish. This seems to revel in the 2018 vintage. A wonderful Ruchottes.

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 15% whole cluster fruit this year. This was very tight, almost surly on the nose following on from the Echézeaux, wet limestone suffusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins. There is an electric line of acidity here, and superb mineralité and symmetry toward a persistent finish that lingers long in the mouth. Very sweet, almost candied on the aftertaste. Just bloomin’ gorgeous.

The 2020 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a crystalline bouquet that articulates the limestone terroir with style. You can smell the vineyard in this wine, crushed rock percolating through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant red fruit mixed with spice and sous-bois, quite powerful yet somehow strict, almost to the point of attenuation, towards the finish. Perhaps this year, their crown jewel is surpassed by their Clos de Vougeot, which is not unprecedented.

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots has turned out brilliantly, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums and cherries mingled with hints of spices, orange rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a generous core of fruit, it confirms that Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg performed especially well in the 2018 vintage.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has the most expressive aromatics of the three wines that I tasted from the appellation at Domaine Mugneret. Only half the number of barrels were produced this year due to very small bunch weight. This has vibrant red berry fruit, wild strawberry, shaved black truffle and light crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite taut and more linear than the Les Vignes Rondes, and certainly with greater tension toward the saline finish. Excellent.

It has an exquisite, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, peony and wilted roses, gaining intensity in the glass. The superb 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village unfurls in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate, grilled game and spicy new wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tight-knit core, fine-grained but firm structuring tannins and juicy balancing acids. This has closed down since the days of its comparatively expressive showing from barrel, and it's now clear that this is a vintage that will demand some time.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village confirms the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a long and perfumed finish. While it's deceptively approachable, long-time followers of this cuvée will know that it will amply reward bottle age with enhanced depth and complexity.

The 2009 Clos de Vougeot is a huge, huge Burgundy. It will need considerable time to shed its baby fat and its considerable tannin. The 2009 boasts incredible depth and richness, with layers of dark red fruit that saturate the palate through to the finish. The 2009 is a super impressive showing from the Mugneret sisters. Good medium red with a healthy rim. Alluring, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry, mocha, dried flowers, spices and smoky oak. Then juicy, salty and penetrating, with the low yield of the vintage obvious in the wine's intensity. Firm acidity--probably higher than the last three wines, notes Marie-Andrée--energizes and sharpens the highly complex flavors of red and darker berries, licorice, spices, blood orange and black pepper. A wine with outstanding precision, this beauty boasts terrific inner-mouth floral lift and also spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the very long whiplash of a finish. Plenty of soil-driven minerality here and still distinctly firm-edged on the aftertaste. Marie-Christine noted that this wine was very closed when she pulled the cork an hour before our tasting. (13.5% alcohol; 3.5 pH; 35 hl/h; harvested on September 25)

The 2012 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is more sulky on the nose compared to the Echézeaux, though eventually it unfolds with red plum and cranberry jus, cold stone and scents of fern. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, beautifully interwoven new oak. This is a structured Clos Vougeot with strict tannin, quite linear in style with a pinch of spice on the broody, almost introspective finish. This is a cerebral Clos de Vougeot...and there's not too many of those about.

Bright medium red. Lovely ineffable perfume of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers, plus a darker suggestion of blackberry. Boasts great intensity to its flavors of red and black fruits and flowers, with captivating minerality and perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine outstanding inner-mouth tension without any hardness. Firm, even, late-arriving tannins frame the fruit on the rising finish of this very classy grand cru.

Healthy medium red; not as dark as the '15. Spicy red fruits, menthol and musky soil tones on the expressive nose, along with the salty aspect of this vintage. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. The 2009 Echezeaux comes across as rich, powerful and totally seductive. It shows considerable richness and depth in a more immediate style than the 2010. The aromatics and nuance of the 2010 are missing, but in exchange readers will find a deep, fleshy wine that will deliver considerable pleasure with minimum cellaring. I especially like the intensity of the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034.

Excellent.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru was cropped at 17hL/ha with around 50% new oak. It has an exquisite, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, peony and wilted roses, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, an almost citric line of acidity with a tensile, linear yet compelling finish. Wonderful.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from three or four parcels within the commune. It has slightly darker fruit compared to the La Colombière, perhaps not quite as pixelated in style. The palate is fleshy and forward with succulent ripe tannins, good density and layer of raspberry, strawberry and spicebox toward the finish. Just a delicious Vosne-Romanée.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from all the domaine’s parcels except for La Colombière. This has a fragrant bouquet of rose-petal-tinged dark berry fruit; the 40% new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. A little pinched at the moment, but it will flesh out with aeration. Fine.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from the four different parcels as usual. Matured in 25% new oak, it has a tightly wound bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry fruit, touches of violet unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture, sensual and refined, extremely pure with not a hair out of place on the finish. Gorgeous.

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of four parcels, cropped at 36hL/ha and matured in one-third new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with wilted violets infusing the red berry fruit. The palate has a sense of brightness on the entry, hints of confit strawberry, just a very light marine note with a finely-structured, lightly-spiced, bitter cherry finish. This will be difficult to resist young.

This is an intense style of Clos de Vougeot that has also maintained considerable freshness.

The 2011 Clos-Vougeot comes across as deep, powerful and also closed in on itself. Here the flavors are beautifully centered and polished throughout. Fine, crystalline tannins support the bright, delineated finish. The 2011 is a rare Clos Vougeot that is both finessed and powerful. The bright, saline finish is hard to resist.
