    Petrolo

    About Petrolo

One of Tuscany’s leading estates, Petrolo will be a familiar name to oenophiles across the globe. Located just one mile east of the Chianti Classico region, it shares much of the same terroir in its soil typography with a touch more elevation at 450 metres above sea level. Rocky, cool and bathed in Tuscan sunshine, this property is perhaps most famous for its Galatrona cuvée, one of Italy’s finest Merlots.

Petrolo was founded by the grandfather of current winemaker Luca Sanjust in 1947. At Petrolo, they are down-to-earth and obsessed with quality, caring much more for the wine in the bottle than for building flash wineries or participating in gimmicky marketing exercises. The wine is dense and opulent as would be expected from a top-quality Merlot, but with beautiful freshness and finesse – this is a wine that has been made with love.

    Viniculture

Galatrona is the estate’s flagship cuvée, the undisputed king of these hills, sourced from a small vineyard of the same name. Planted in the 1980s with low-yielding Bordeaux clone Merlot vines, the vineyard’s soil is an archetypal composition of deeply rich clay with veins of schist, marl and sandstone imbuing stunning minerality to the effortlessly generous and elegant fruit. Inspired by the great producers of Pomerol, Galatrona is crowned as a worthy rival to the likes of Pétrus, Le Pin and Masseto.

There are numerous strings to the mighty bow that is Petrolo, not least of which is their single-vineyard range of Bòggina A, Bòggina B and Bòggina C.

Bòggina A and Bòggina C are both pure Sangiovese expressions hailed from different plots and terroirs. Bòggina B is a pure expression of the ancient Italian Trebbiano varietal, a grape with which collectors should become increasingly familiar due to its sensational complexity at the hands of producers such as Petrolo.

This is fresh and perfumed with notes of beeswax, spicy herbs and orange blossom. Nuts. Honey blossom. Beautiful fruit with savory undertones and wet stone minerality. Full-bodied, so persistent and complex with depth to the fruit and stunning acidity. The finish is long and linear, changing from mineral to a steely character at the very end. Beautiful as always. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly, the wine seems to benefit from. Dark cherry, licorice, leather, spice and menthol build as the 2018 shows everything its got. Impressive.

The 2011 Boggina sees fruit sourced from the same single-vineyard, only this expression sees 12 days of maceration and 14 moths of barrel aging (both tonneaux and botte). This is a radically different wine that shows precision and dark focus. The BogginAnfora feels fuzzy and foggy in comparison with a broader aromatic presentation, although both wines offer considerable charm. Here, the aromas are delivered straight to your senses with power and determination. The mouthfeel is richly layered with sweet cherry and spice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

Dark red cherry, plum smoke, tobacco and violet notes are beautifully defined in Petrolo's 2013 Bòggina. Rich and pliant through to the finish, this classy 100% Sangiovese delivers outstanding quality to match its inviting personality. Today, the flavors are naturally quite primary, so a few years of cellaring is warranted. Tasted next to the Bòggina Anfora, the straight Bòggina has more mid-palate intensity and overtness, as well as an expression of fruit that is more closely aligned to the Petrolo house style. But that is really splitting hairs, as both Bògginas are delicious.

Extremely perfumed aromas of blackcurrants and fresh lavender follow through to a full body with a very tight palate of dark fruit and finely textured yet chewy tannins. It’s rather subdued, but shows character and intensity. Give this at least four or five years to open. Try after 2025 and onwards.

Very complex and perfumed aromas of black cherry, violet, black tea and minerals. Also complex and perfumed on the palate, with savory blackberry, black pepper and spice flavors showing multilayered depth and a bright mineral overlay. Finishes bright and long, with a fine dusting of noble tannins and a lovely light touch. A lighter styled Galatrona, but a knockout wine.

Petrolo's 2011 Galatrona is just as impressive this year as it was last year. A vivid, voluptuous wine, the 2011 literally jumps from the glass, showing superb intensity, power and depth. Mocha, black cherries, smoke, tobacco and leather are some of the many notes that inform this drop-dead gorgeous, extroverted Galatrona. The style is overt and unabashedly ripe, but all the elements are in the right place. Galatrona fans will adore the 2011. What a gorgeous wine this is.

This is the flagship wine from Luca Sanjust's Petrolo estate located not too far from Arezzo in the Valdarno area of eastern Tuscany. The 2016 Galatrona is indeed a masterpiece to behold. This wine offers thick layering and deep intensity with aromas that offer an incredible range, starting off with luscious dark chocolate on one side and ending with fragrant white truffle on the far end of its long aromatic trajectory. You get plummy fruit, spice, sweet tobacco and tilled earth packed tight in between. This full-bodied Merlot is softly textured and succulent with long-lasting flavor intensity on the close. Petrolo's Merlot is planted in a ten-hectare parcel distinguished by thick clay soils. I have been watching Galatrona's evolution for years and have tasted the wine on occasion in various vertical tastings. This is my favorite vintage made thus far.

This is incredibly fresh for a 2017 with a well-executed, reductive edge; it opens with rosemary, thyme and tea leaves, before moving through blackcurrants, dark cherries, brambleberries, ash, tobacco and citrus. Dense, full-bodied and very chewy, this remains incredulously fine and elegant. Robust and enveloping tannins coat the mouth and mold the wild fruit into a sleek, pliable package. Finally, a string of refreshing acidity lifts the finish long and complex. Drink now, but better after 2026.

The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent.

Dark ruby red colour. Finely spicy on the nose, blackcurrants, fine earthy notes, plus a hint of dried rose petal, some cigar box. On the palate a fruity texture, entwined with hearty, juicy tannin, elegant flow, comes back long and juicy in the finish on fine spicy tones, still a bit young.

This is the Galatrona that everyone has been waiting for. It's the vintage that shows depth and power yet wonderful finesse and focus. Best ever. Drink from 2023 but already electrifying.

Aromas of blackberries, black olives, green olive, and violets. It’s really aromatic. Full-bodied, yet so precise and polished with creamy, layered tannins that caress your palate. It’s extremely persistent and goes on for minutes. Only 40% new wood. Really balanced. All about purity and complexity From organically grown grapes. Try after 2023.

    Falstaff (100)

Dark ruby red colour. Finely spicy on the nose, blackcurrants, fine earthy notes, plus a hint of dried rose petal, some cigar box. On the palate a fruity texture, entwined with hearty, juicy tannin, elegant flow, comes back long and juicy in the finish on fine spicy tones, still a bit young.
