A true hidden gem is something of a rarity in a region subject to so much attention, but we believe Philipponnat has been consistently overlooked by the market in favour of other names in Champagne.
Boasting a heritage spanning almost 500 years, the Philipponnat family has been cultivating vines in the region of Aÿ as early as 1522 and count the Court of Louis XIV, Magistrates and Royal Mayors of Aÿ as its loyal patrons amongst many others.

Vinous (91)The 2015 Extra-Brut Cuvée 1522 is laced with hints of white flowers, mint, dried herbs and light tropical notes. There’s good depth and intensity in the fruit, but also some coarseness in the texture, which suggests variability in ripening, plus perhaps some touches of tannin from the fruit and oak fermentation, which is about 58% for this release. I would prefer to drink the 1522 at the dinner table, where some of that textural intensity will be an asset. Most of this fruit comes from estate vineyards in Aÿ, plus dollops of Pinot Noir from Mailly and Chardonnay from Verzy. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2022. |
