Pierre Graffeuille
About Pierre Grafeuille
Pierre Graffeuille is the director of second growth Château Léoville-Las-Cases in Saint-Julien and Clos du Marquis. Having graduated from the university of Bordeaux with a degree in oenology, Graffeuille went on to Australia, New Zealand, Burgundy, and the Rhône to hone his skills before returning to Bordeaux.
He has undertaken a personal project and developed an unusual and completely unique wine, made with a combination of fruit from two wildly different geographic locations in France: Cabernet Sauvignon from slopes of deep gravel in the Graves du Médoc between Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac and St Estéphe with Grenache and Syrah from the pebbly, clay limestone soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. It is a tiny production of about 7000 bottles, blended from very qualitative plots from both regions. All the bottles are numbered.

The Wine Independent (94)The 2019 Odyssee is an eclectic blend of Bordeaux and Rhone vineyards, made by Pierre Graffeuille (now at Montrose) and Matthieu Dumarcher, composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Medoc, and 25% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre from the Rhone. Medium garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with vivacious notes of black raspberries, mulberries, and juicy plums, followed by an undercurrent of crushed blackcurrants, Indian spices, and charcoal with a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with spicy black fruit flavors, supported by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a skip in its step. |
