Pujanza
About Pujanza
Awarded the unofficial, yet significant, rank of Rioja First Growth by Tim Atkin MW, Bodegas Pujanza is a force to be reckoned with in Spain’s foremost vinous region standing shoulder to shoulder with formidable names from La Rioja Alta to Artuke.
Hailed by many as a specialist in “modern” Rioja, winemaker and proprietor Carlos San Pedro finds this to be something of a misnomer considering his inspiration is in fact the old ways of Rioja. Moving the focus away from the winery, with its regional propensity for heavy American oaking, and shifting it towards the vineyard and a quest to express the stunning terroir of Rioja, Bodegas Pujanza crafts particularly transparent and pure Tempranillo.
Nestled in Laguardia, the heart of Rioja Alavesa, San Pedro harks back to the noble tradition in this particular corner of Rioja of exceptionally elegant wines, noted for their beguiling perfume and greater nuance. Having founded this grand estate at the tender age of 25, the winemaker is as passionate as any vigneron about the future of Rioja and its place amongst the very greatest fine wine regions. Currently working 40 hectares of the finest vines in Laguardia, Carlos San Pedro cites his ultimate ambition as making elegance, subtlety and purity synonymous with Rioja, as opposed to mass-production and overbearing oak.

Tim Atkin MW (95)Pujanza wasn't hit by the hail that affected Rioja in 2017, but this is still a pretty concentrated number, made entirely from Tempranillo grown at 630 metres and aged in 25% new wood. Chalky, dense and youthful, it's a wine that's made to mature in bottle, combining intensity with focus, freshness and serious tannins |
