Raveneau
Francois Raveneau, an elusive but stoic vigneron, founded the domaine in 1948. It is now run by Bernard and Jean-Marie, two brothers. They have miniscule yields of hand harvested Chardonnay in many of Chablis finest sites. Each of their holdings is no larger than a suburban house. This Burgundy has a cult following.

Vinous (89+)Good pale, green-tinged color. Stony, pure and subdued on the nose. Tightly wound today, with the citrus, mineral and spicy oak flavors coming across as dry, even austere. Strong acids and minerality give the finish a faint hard edge and make this tricky to taste today. Right now the fruit is in the deep background. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91+)Quite closed on the nose, hinting at menthol and wet stone. Then juicy and tight in the mouth, more taut and incisive than silky today, and showing superb precision for the vintage. Solid mineral grip extends the finish and gives this premier cru excellent tension, but it will need five or six years to unwind. |

Wine Advocate (93)Raveneau's 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux is excellent, offering up a youthfully reserved bouquet of apple, white peach, beeswax and dried flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with lovely texture, considerable mid-palate amplitude and a bright line of acidity, concluding with a firm, salty finish that balances its somewhat gourmand attack. Along with the Vaillons, the Butteaux stood out as one of the most complete of Raveneau's premiers crus this year, revealing more and more nuance over several days. Right now, it's quite closed, but I won't be surprised if it becomes quite musky and exotic after a few years in the cellar. |

Wine Advocate (93+)My favorite premier cru in the range this year is the 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, green apple, pear, oyster shell and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, taut and structured, with fine concentration and chalky extract, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish. |

Burghound (92)Here too there is a plethora of Chablis character on the cool, pure and airy aromas that are comprised of smoky white orchard fruit and various citrus scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to remark upon. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouth feel before culminating in a textured, balanced and saline finish that is both dry and tightly wound. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-95)Pale colour with green tints, very fresh, there is even a little bit of noble reduction. The 2018 Forêts delivers an absolutely scintillating, crystalline purity. There is impressive weight on the palate, balanced by a refreshing greener element to the fruit. |

Vinous (92)Bright gold-tinged yellow. Aromas of citrus fruits, minerals and spices, with deeper notes of honey, truffle and oatmeal emerging with air. A rich, powerful, uncompromisingly dry Chablis with more energy and cut than the 2006. This was austere from the start and there's nothing easy about it even today. But the finish impresses for its tactile texture and wet-stone minerality, and there's fruit lurking, so I would check back in on this very broad wine in another couple of years. |

Vinous (93)The 2009 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre is super-impressive. There is a level of detail, nuance and energy to the fruit that is quite rare in 2009. The Montée de Tonnerre possesses dazzling purity all the way through to the finely articulated, chiseled finish. This is yet another superb effort from Raveneau. I have a slight preference for the 2010 here, but the 2009 will offer fabulous drinking while its younger sibling ages in the cellar. |
