The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 100% whole cluster and is matured in one-third new oak. It has a really beautiful bouquet that you could easily mistake for Christophe Roumier’s: blackberry, blueberry, a hint of crushed violet and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fine-grain tannin, the new oak perfectly sutured into the black and blue fruit with superb delineation and focus towards the silky smooth finish. This is one of the best 2016s Bonnes-Mares that I have tasted, if not the best.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is raised in 25% new oak and is almost entirely made from whole bunches. That stem addition gently guides the aromatics here, imparting a subtle pepperiness and earthiness that combines deftly with the vivid black fruit; perhaps there is less blue fruit here compared to other Bonnes-Mares this vintage. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, reminiscent of de Vogüé in some ways. The slightly confit finish manages to retain impressive freshness. It is missing a little persistence, but otherwise this is a fine, quite delicious Bonnes-Mares.

Racked three or four weeks prior to my visit, the 2018 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains contains 10% Gamay. It has a crisp red cherry and wild strawberry bouquet with veins of blue fruit. The palate is well balanced with succulent tannins and a little more body than the 2017, as you would expect, as well as more rondeur on the finish.

The 2020 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, which includes 25% Gamay, has a delightful, open-knit bouquet with lively red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is what you might describe as "dainty", well defined with a crunchy, tart finish that feels just a little "clipped" at the moment.

The 2021 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, which contains 25% Gamay, has a pretty red cherry and bergamot tinged bouquet, quite airy in style, obviously more "Côte d'Or" than "Beaujolais". The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, quite tart in the mouth with a short, sharp finish.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with red cherries, raspberry and touches of crushed strawberry. The wine comes across as well defined if just missing some joie-de-vivre that thankfully evolves with time. Conservative for an Amoureuses, but that is a virtue because there is a beguiling effortlessness here. And that translates across to the palate: very well judged acidity, structured and with disarming purity and elegance on the sensual finish. Complete. Stunning. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tight, quite backward nose that demands more coaxing than Christophe Roumier's Les Amoureuses , but it is easy to fall for the dark brambly fruit mixed with sous-bois and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, zesty and quite citric, offering desiccated orange peel and blood orange flavors. Fresh and sorbet-like on the finish. This Les Amoureuses should age with style. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

A juicy, supple wine, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix is totally expressive in the glass. Sweet raspberries, spices, flowers and mint all meld together in a gracious, silky Burgundy long on class. Here, too, Groffier achieves lovely polish and silkiness. Sweet floral notes meld in the resonant finish.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix 1er Cru has an extremely pure and sensual bouquet with perfumed red cherries, crushed strawberry and vanillary scents from the new oak that needs a few more months to be fully subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. It is not the most complex Chambolle-Musigny, but it feels approachable and flatters the senses. Enjoy over the next 12 years. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru has an odd, slightly lactic bouquet at first, but improves with aeration; it feels slightly East Asian in style. The palate is fleshy and quite oaky, very New World, with a simple, slightly shallow finish. I find this mercurial and difficult to pin down. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru includes 25% new oak and around 50% whole bunch and represented the first vines to be picked this vintage; the alcohol is under 13.0° at the moment. This has a beautifully defined, well-focused and quite mineral-driven bouquet packed full of blackberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is full of primal energy, the red fruit framed by succulent tannins that form an almost corpulent finish, which disguises the structure underneath. This is a superb Chambolle-Musigny from Groffier.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru comes from 80-year-old vines, this blend including 50% whole bunches. It has a powerful nose with iris and sous-bois aromas infusing the predominantly black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, full of tension and quite precise, yet still a little "compact" on the finish. It will require three or four years to unfold once in bottle.

Deep red-ruby. Explosive, rather wild aromas of raspberry, smoke and earth. Lush, sweet and thick; voluptuous for this cuvee but with terrific sap. Really resounds on the back end, which features broad tannins and an impressively rich flavor of crushed raspberry. A superb showing.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru comes from a parcel of 80-year-old vines, containing 25% whole bunch fruit and matured in 75% new oak. The bouquet is completely different from Les Hauts Doix, displaying more density, darker fruit, more substance and a less airy style, but still very pure and detailed. Matured in 25% new oak and 90% whole bunches, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru is the most opulent of Groffier’s 2019s with kirsch and orange zest infusing the red berry fruit.
