Good bright, dark red. Briary blueberry nose shows a captivating crushed-fruit urgency. Wonderfully energetic and pure in the mouth, with pristine flavors of cassis and blueberry. Extremely primary wine-and more powerful than the 2007. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and palate-saturating perfume.

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 100% whole cluster and is matured in one-third new oak. It has a really beautiful bouquet that you could easily mistake for Christophe Roumier’s: blackberry, blueberry, a hint of crushed violet and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of fine-grain tannin, the new oak perfectly sutured into the black and blue fruit with superb delineation and focus towards the silky smooth finish. This is one of the best 2016s Bonnes-Mares that I have tasted, if not the best.

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is raised in 25% new oak and is almost entirely made from whole bunches. That stem addition gently guides the aromatics here, imparting a subtle pepperiness and earthiness that combines deftly with the vivid black fruit; perhaps there is less blue fruit here compared to other Bonnes-Mares this vintage. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, reminiscent of de Vogüé in some ways. The slightly confit finish manages to retain impressive freshness. It is missing a little persistence, but otherwise this is a fine, quite delicious Bonnes-Mares.

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from 80-year old vines: 100% whole bunch with one-third new oak. This takes time to unfold on the nose when often this cuvée is quite medium. The aromatics say: Hold your horses. Then it unfurls to reveal slightly tertiary black fruit, tobacco and crushed limestone, almost flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Silky texture, poised acidity, this might be the most elegant and refined Bonnes-Mares that Nicolas Groffier has produced. I confess, I could not resist swallowing my tasting measure. This is one of Nicolas Groffier's finest achievements to date.

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, which is located 25% on Terres Blanches and 75% on Terres Rouges, is raised in 50% new oak and made with 100% whole bunches. This has a very delineated and pure bouquet. The stems are neatly assimilated; subtle scents of sous-bois and Earl Grey emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline, like others, maybe missing the usual flamboyance and opulence on the finish, yet that is articulating the style of the growing season. I can see this gaining more weight after its final racking.

Racked three or four weeks prior to my visit, the 2018 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains contains 10% Gamay. It has a crisp red cherry and wild strawberry bouquet with veins of blue fruit. The palate is well balanced with succulent tannins and a little more body than the 2017, as you would expect, as well as more rondeur on the finish.

Good medium red. Spicy red fruits complicated by soil nuances on the nose. Showed a captivating red cherry perfume with air, along with harmonious acidity and considerable finesse. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic, with noteworthy floral persistence for its appellation. Groffier told me he did no extraction at all for half of this cuvée. As in many past vintages, this should make a serious Bourgogne and yet it also conveys a relaxed quality. (Incidentally, the estate's Passetoutgrains, which includes one-third Gamay, is also a winner in 2016, offering juicy, savory red fruit aromas and flavors and a firm finish.)

(70% vendange entier; 100% new oak; these 80-year-old vines produced 37 hectoliters per hectare in 2013): Bright, dark red. Lovely pepper-and-spice lift to the aromas of red cherry, rose petal and licorice. Sappy and dense, with a captivating light touch and a compelling sweet/savory balance to the red fruit and licorice flavors. The very long finish features noble tannins and a building spiciness. A bit hard to taste today owing to a high level of carbon dioxide but looks to be brilliant.

Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is showing quite a lot of reduction on the nose, which is quite savory at first, with hints of dried blood infusing the black and blue fruit. The focused, well-balanced palate is full of energy, delivering very fine, supple tannin and a perfectly pitched line of acidity. It doesn’t quite deliver the complexity one would expect, although the finish is undoubtedly refined and persistent. Good potential, but it needs five years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The wine comes across as well defined if just missing some joie-de-vivre that thankfully evolves with time. Conservative for an Amoureuses, but that is a virtue because there is a beguiling effortlessness here. And that translates across to the palate: very well judged acidity, structured and with disarming purity and elegance on the sensual finish. Complete. Stunning. The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is quite heady on the nose, though just stops short of overripeness. There's just a soupçon of VA, that gives it a bit of lift. There may be some grilled berries here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite compact and sinewy for an Amoureuses. Then, it gradually reveals amplitude and complexity towards the finish. Give it another couple of years to see if there is improvement, but there is pedigree.

The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge has a precise bouquet with commendable precision for a regional red, attractive rose petal scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with good weight on the finish. For, me this is a level up from Passetoutgrain.

The 2021 Bourgogne Rouge is light and airy on the nose, brambly red fruit with light sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brittle in texture, attenuating towards the finish with a sapid aftertaste.

Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle.

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is 100% new oak and 100% whole clusters. It has quite an intense bouquet with brambly red fruit, white pepper and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, elegant and poised, white pepper notes with a harmonious, quite mineral-driven finish that incorporates the stems with style. Excellent.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96)

Dense dark purple, rich fruit, there is a touch of something tough on the nose. This is very powerful wine, with a heady dense dark red fruit, then some floral notes. The wood returns behind. Surprisingly inaccessible in some ways but potentially very fine. The backwardness of the bouquet disappears with time in the glass.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with red cherries, raspberry and touches of crushed strawberry. Complete. Stunning. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a tight, quite backward nose that demands more coaxing than Christophe Roumier's Les Amoureuses , but it is easy to fall for the dark brambly fruit mixed with sous-bois and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, zesty and quite citric, offering desiccated orange peel and blood orange flavors. Fresh and sorbet-like on the finish. This Les Amoureuses should age with style. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is aged in 25% new oak with 50% whole bunches. This Amoureuses is quite arresting on the nose with intense black cherries, violet, sous-bois and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with muscular tannins and good grip with an overtly saline finish. You can feel the shucked oyster shells in this wine and it has a tremendously long aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru comes from 80-years old vines that was harvest over five morning, one hour each day and vinified in the same vat of course. Blended with 50% whole bunch and matured in 25% new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with rose petals, red berry fruit, just a very faint hints of menthol in the far distance. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and vibrant, lightly spiced towards the finish that feels linear and strict. This Amoureuses does not want to give too much away at the moment but the length in the mouth cannot be denied and augurs well for the future.
