Roberto Voerzio

About Roberto Voerzio

Roberto Voerzio is undeniably one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont, his “Barolos are some of the richest, deepest and most texturally beautiful wines (Antonio Galloni, Vinous). Voerzio’s name, not to mention his labels, is one of the most recognisable in Italy and these exceedingly sought-after bottlings have acquired one of the largest cult followings in Piedmont.

The Roberto Voerzio estate was born in 1987 in the heart of the Langhe, and has since built a collection of La Morra's most prized vineyards, rivalled by few other growers. Described by Antonio Galloni, Vinous as ‘one of the world’s most talented and passionate winemakers’, Voerzio is a staunch perfectionist, only bottling his wines if they match his exacting standards.

Viniculture

Voerzio’s yields are also the lowest in the region (500g of fruit per vine for the Crus), giving the utmost intensity and generosity to his wines. The freshness he obtains from these radical green harvesting methods allows his masterpieces to age with a unique style. It is this avant-garde approach that has given him a modernist reputation, yet taking his greatest inspiration from the masters; Giacosa, Conterno and Rinaldi, he expertly bridges the gap to the traditional school. This incredible attention to detail and immaculate vineyard management not only results in stunning quality, but also tiny volumes being produced.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2013 (6x75cl)

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (94)

The 2013 Barolo Cerequio is soft, delicate and understated, with a creamy expression of fruit, silky tannins and exceptional overall balance. Sweet floral notes, bright red stone fruits, mint and cinnnamon give the wine its aromatic lift and presence. The only thing the 2013 is missing is the fruit intensity and exuberance of the very best years. Today, the Cerequio comes across as not fully formed and still recovering from its bottling about two months before this tasting. It will be interesting to see if more vineyard signatures develop over time.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Barolo Cerequio shows impressive and firm construction; however, the wine remains delicate and finessed all the while. This is a real stunner with inner fiber that is as strong, but as softly textured, as the highest quality silk. Aromas of wild cherry, violets, licorice and tar are in a tight, nascent state at this young stage. This implies they will blossom with time, coming into focus with greater intensity and complexity as the wine continues its careful bottle aging. This wine shows an evident mineral signature at the back.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2016 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (100)

Wow. This is archetypal Barolo with a solid cylinder of polished tannins running through the center of the wine from start to finish. Full-bodied and wonderfully constructed with the tannins and beautiful fruit in all the right places. Dark fruit, dried earth and mushrooms with mild, hazelnut notes. Fantastic is the word to describe it. Endless finish. Drink after 2024 and onwards.

Inc. VAT: £1,246.07
2016

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Fossati 2016 (6x75cl) A ying yang combination of power and aggression with body and drinkability. Spicy dark fruit – lots of volume and power on the palate, quite ferrous. A masculine virile style of wine. Dark fruit and stones. A 35-40 year old plot. At the top of the vineyard the soils are volcanic and stony. Extending down towards the bottom the soils are more clay-influenced.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2014 Barolo la Serra is the most rigid and closed of the three single-vineyard selections I tasted this year. This wine requires the most nudging and patience, but all the while you are reminded that the best is still to come. Cassis, white cherry, grilled herb and crushed white stone or pencil shaving rise to the top. Those aromas are impeccably focused and sharp. At this young stage, there are few curves or soft sides to this impenetrable Barolo. I have extended the drinking window accordingly, because it will need more time to flesh out and soften.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata 2016 (6x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £1,246.07
2016

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata 2016 (6x75cl) Complex aromatics of confit red fruits, wild flowers and anise. Seductive and sensual, limpid caressing fruit that bleeds into a savoury earthy spice. Complex liquorice and balsamic notes. Mineral as well as fruity and spicy. Gorgeous. The sandy clay and limestone soils give a very elegant, silky red fruited wine. A south-facing parcel within one of the region’s great vineyards, situated in the Annunziata sub zone of La Morra. Aged for two years in a mix of big and small barrels, light toast, French oak (15, 20, 30 and 35 HL sizes for the big barrels).
