Roberto Voerzio

About Roberto Voerzio

Roberto Voerzio is undeniably one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont, his “Barolos are some of the richest, deepest and most texturally beautiful wines (Antonio Galloni, Vinous). Voerzio’s name, not to mention his labels, is one of the most recognisable in Italy and these exceedingly sought-after bottlings have acquired one of the largest cult followings in Piedmont.

The Roberto Voerzio estate was born in 1987 in the heart of the Langhe, and has since built a collection of La Morra's most prized vineyards, rivalled by few other growers. Described by Antonio Galloni, Vinous as ‘one of the world’s most talented and passionate winemakers’, Voerzio is a staunch perfectionist, only bottling his wines if they match his exacting standards.

Viniculture

Voerzio’s yields are also the lowest in the region (500g of fruit per vine for the Crus), giving the utmost intensity and generosity to his wines. The freshness he obtains from these radical green harvesting methods allows his masterpieces to age with a unique style. It is this avant-garde approach that has given him a modernist reputation, yet taking his greatest inspiration from the masters; Giacosa, Conterno and Rinaldi, he expertly bridges the gap to the traditional school. This incredible attention to detail and immaculate vineyard management not only results in stunning quality, but also tiny volumes being produced.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Like its cousins from the other crus reviewed here, the 2014 Barolo Cerequio must be given ample time to open. Better yet, give it another ten years of cellar aging, if not more. The fruit is rigid, tonic and tight with very fine aromas of cassis, sour cherry, balsam herb and crushed river stone. This wine is tightly wound around itself, with fruit nuances locked into a tight core. The mouthfeel is lean and long with that same tension and tightness. We can count on this wine to gain in volume and complexity as time marches by.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2014 Barolo la Serra is the most rigid and closed of the three single-vineyard selections I tasted this year. This wine requires the most nudging and patience, but all the while you are reminded that the best is still to come. Cassis, white cherry, grilled herb and crushed white stone or pencil shaving rise to the top. Those aromas are impeccably focused and sharp. At this young stage, there are few curves or soft sides to this impenetrable Barolo. I have extended the drinking window accordingly, because it will need more time to flesh out and soften.

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2014 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is slightly (just a hair) more accessible at this very premature stage in its drinking life. The wine opens to broad and wide fruit flavors that include cassis, wild cherry and dried blueberry with savory tones of tar, licorice and tobacco. These elements are carefully stitched together within a tight and elaborate embroidery. The mouthfeel is silky and long, but there is also a very subtle element of softness that makes this wine taste smooth and rich on the palate.
