    Château Saint Pierre

    About Château Saint Pierre

Considered one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, Château Saint Pierre has well-sited vines that were first planted in 1693 and took its name from Baron de Saint-Pierre, who acquired the estate in 1767. Over the decades, the estate was fragmented after several inheritances and was only reunified in 1982 through the mammoth effort undertaken by Henri Martin. Ever keen to embrace technology, Château Saint Pierre was one of the first in the Médoc to use satellites to help with grape picking. Underrated for years, they are claiming their deserved place in the limelight with lush, full but not overly assertive wine.

Expressive on the nose, so aromatic. The palate is so delicious - dense and structured, powerful and muscular but so well packaged. Uber glamour here. Real depth of flavour with lingering spice from the liquorice and sweet cedar, some bitter dark chocolate, floral touches and even soft savoury truffle aspects too. I love it, chewy almost balancing intensity with freshness and just such clarity that you know it's been well worked. Buy and hold on to.

A candidate for one of the finest St.-Juliens of the vintage, St.-Pierre's 2006 is one of the smaller productions in this consistent appellation, making it difficult to find in the marketplace. Its deep opaque purple color is accompanied by notes of roasted herbs, charcoal, graphite, and extravagant creme de cassis and licorice. Full-bodied, powerful, deep, and rich with outstanding balance, purity, texture, and length, this stunning 2006 will be very long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.

The all-time greatest wine I have ever tasted from Saint-Pierre, this estate, the smallest of the grand cru classes of St.-Julien, has an opaque purple color and a spectacular nose of subtle charcoal, creme de cassis, blackberry, and incense. Full-bodied, with striking intensity and flamboyantly rich, exuberant flavors bursting with extract, the St. Pierre has no hard edges, but rather massive, incredibly well-endowed blockbuster style, which should prove to be monumental. Give it 6-8 years to take on more definition and calm down, but this is a 30- to 40-year wine. Bravo!

The final blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot has resulted in a wine of great power, stature, gravitas and density. The wine has a black purple color and a brilliant nose of scorched earth, creme de cassis, espresso roast, blackberries, truffles and licorice. Full-bodied, extremely powerful, yet with abundant sweet tannin, this stunning effort should prove sensational if given 7-10 years of cellaring. It should also last for 30-40 years.

This 17-hectare estate has been rejuvenated by owner Jean-Louis Triaud and is certainly producing some of the top wines from the appellation today. I tasted the deep, inky-colored 2015 Château Saint-Pierre twice and it’s reminiscent of the 2010, only with more elegance. In 2015 the wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc and it spent 14 months in 50% new and 50% once used barrels. Chocolate covered dark fruits, damp earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil shaving-like notes emerge from this huge, concentrated beauty that has building tannin and a huge mid-palate. It’s an incredible wine that builds with time in the glass, has no hard edges and is going to 3-4 decades of life. Bravo!

The most effortlessly brilliant vintage in St Julien, and Saint Pierre is right up there with the best of examples you can find. Smoky and sculpted, still chewy tannins, firm but confident, liqourice and campfire smoke that displays welcome and generosity - makes you want to pull up a chair next to the embers and grab a friend to share it with. The fruits are brambled hedegrow and crumbled blackberry, with touches of bioche and cream, along with bitter chocolate that adds definition. Mineral tingle to the acidities, and another wash of smoke as it opens. 50% new oak, harvest September 29 to October 17.

The 2017 Saint-Pierre is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps from the glass with notes of crushed blackberries, juicy black plums, and mulberries, plus suggestions of wild sage, pencil shavings, and lavender. Medium-bodied, the palate is coated with bright, crunchy black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy. Nice

Checking in as a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot from very old vines and still aging in 50% new French oak, the 2018 Château Saint-Pierre reveals a saturated purple color to go with rich, full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, graphite, and spicy oak. Rich, powerful, and concentrated, yet also with gorgeous purity and freshness, it’s a serious, age-worthy wine that’s going to need 7-8 years of bottle age but will be very long-lived.

Saint-Pierre (St Julien; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14% Merlot; 9% Cabernet Franc; 7% Petit Verdot – the latter, apparently, co-planted with the Cabernet and for the first time in this vintage separately counted; 13.3% alcohol; a final yield of 34 hl/ha; tasted at the UGCB press tasting and at Lagrange with consistent and convergent notes). One of the wines that I had already heard plenty of praise for (from the cognoscenti) before I tasted it. It doesn’t disappoint. There is a lovely cassis fruit here; the palate is very pure and nicely focussed; the oak is beautifully absorbed and incorporated (which has not always been the case here even in relatively recent vintages). There is also a pleasant touch of sweet spice alongside the plum skin and dark berry fruit, an almost slightly wild herbal element and a crushed rock minerality, all of which bring further interest. Above all, though, we have a tender and refined texture chiselled from fine-grained tannins and an impressive plenitude. Still somewhat under the radar (though I have no idea why) and still representing excellent value, this is definitely one to add to the shopping list
