Vinous (93+)Good dark red. Wild, evolving nose combines black olive, game, spices, truffle, earth and a whiff of balsamic plum and sandalwood. Spicy, gamey and complex on the palate, showing a sexy candied quality to the flavors of black raspberry pastille and smoke. Fat with fruit but the wine's serious acidity and smooth tannins should hold it effortlessly for another decade. A captivating note of violet emerged with aeration. Incidentally, this was the first vintage in which Sylvie Esmonin vinified with a portion of the stems. She actually began with two cuvées of this juice, and she included 50% whole clusters in the batch that she vinified without SO2. Lovely energy here. |

Vinous (92+)Good medium red, a bit less saturated than the old-vines village wine. Very ripe, multifaceted nose offers dark raspberry, dried flowers and pungent pepper and mineral notes; an essence of Burgundy. Then vibrant and penetrating in the mouth, and a step up in class from the village wines. The bitter cherry fruit is framed and intensified by peppery, spicy lift. Mounting ripe tannins coat the molars. This really stains the palate and sides of the tongue and yet it shows a much lighter touch-and much more finishing perfume-than Esmonin's village wines. A superb showing today, with more to come. |

Vinous (92+)(vinified with 75% whole clusters; 90% new oak): Bright, dark red. Reduced aromas of black raspberry and licorice accented by spices. Rich, round and voluminous yet light on its feet owing to intense minerality and lively acidity; offers complex flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, redcurrant, spices, flowers and crushed rock. An element of peppery, spicy herbs really lifts the finish today while giving the wine a slight edge that calls for patience. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru had just begun its malo and contains 56% whole bunch. This has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, briary and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite linear and precise towards the finish. Lively and focused, I admire the joie-de-vivre in this Clos Saint-Jacques. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a tightly-knit bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois, veins of dark chocolate and freshly-rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, grainy texture, well balanced with a fresh, marine-influenced finish. Not the length of recent vintages, yet it has commendable focus and sense of energy. |
