About Domaine Taupenot-Merme
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a dynamic, up-and-coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares under vines in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It is run by the seventh generation Romain Taupenot alongside his sister, Virginie. Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot runs this domaine with his sister, Virginie.
Viniculture
The average age of the vines are over 50 years old and they follow lutte raisonnée or ‘the reasoned struggle’ principle in the vineyard, meaning chemicals are used only when they are absolutely needed, if ever.
The house style is generally focused on the great purity of fruit and intensity of aromatics in both their reds and whites. Generally known for producing wine from less-celebrated appellations, such as Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain, they champion these underrated wines with great style and class.

Vinous (91-93)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a showy bouquet with raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and tea leaf aromas, perhaps just needing a little more cohesion that should develop during the remainder of its maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure. |

Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2015 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, raspberry preserve, crushed rose petals and just a hint of blood orange, quite sophisticated in style for a Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy tannin on the entry. This does not shortchange you on fruit: blackberry, raspberry and a pinch of white pepper, leading to a structured and quite grippy finish that like Taupernot-Merme's other 2015s, manages to retain impressive freshness and elegance. It has an incredibly long aftertaste, over a minute in the mouth and you can still feel this. Highly recommended. |

Vinous (95-97)The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme. |

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with veins of orange zest and white pepper on the finish. Great length, but this is quite strict and therefore cellaring is recommended |

The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, ripe red cherry mixed with allspice and white pepper, segueing into a quite a concentrated finish with a long spicy after that might deceive you into think there are stems here. One of my picks from Taupenot-Merme this year. |

The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. There is plenty of tightly knitted fruit here, and a patina of oak that is still to be assimilated, but also wonderful detail and subtlety on the sublime, sophisticated finish. Vinous (92+)The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru evinces a more modern style on the nose with pure and opulent black cherries, fig and sloes. It comes across as a bit of a crowd pleaser but it is undeniably attractive. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin and well judged acidity. There is plenty of extraction here and a carapace of quality new oak, but it seems to work well. It should become a noble Nuits Saint-Georges with a few years in bottle.
