    Taupenot-Merme

    About Domaine Taupenot-Merme

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is a dynamic, up-and-coming domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, with 13 hectares under vines in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. It is run by the seventh generation Romain Taupenot alongside his sister, Virginie. Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot runs this domaine with his sister, Virginie.

    Viniculture

The average age of the vines are over 50 years old and they follow lutte raisonnée or ‘the reasoned struggle’ principle in the vineyard, meaning chemicals are used only when they are absolutely needed, if ever.

The house style is generally focused on the great purity of fruit and intensity of aromatics in both their reds and whites. Generally known for producing wine from less-celebrated appellations, such as Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain, they champion these underrated wines with great style and class.

(from Les Duresses and Grands Champs). Slightly more elegant aromas include those of poached plum, cassis and newly turned earth. The seductive yet dense and powerful bigger-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the solidly persistent finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This moderately rustic effort should reward a decade of improvement and last for twice that. (89-92)/2028+

The 2021 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of three Premier Crus when it is usually two (the additional one comes from En Reugne). It has a light mulberry bouquet that just needs a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite saline in the mouth but it just needs more complexity on the finish.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a showy bouquet with raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and tea leaf aromas, perhaps just needing a little more cohesion that should develop during the remainder of its maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in around 25% new oak, has quite a perfumed bouquet with red cherries and rose petal scents, quite airy and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, slightly creamy in texture, gaining weight towards the finish that feels quite caressing.

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village, racked 4-6 weeks prior to my visit, has a fragrant bouquet, maybe without quite the same pixelation as the Morey-Saint-Denis. The palate is framed by edgy tannins, brambly red fruit, orange zest and a touch of black pepper, vibrant and energetic towards its tense finish. This will offer a lot of pleasure over the next decade.

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, though it seems foursquare and shows slight attenuation toward the finish. It actually showed better when re-tasted a month later at the domaine when it exhibited finer precision. Drink 2014-2020.

Romain Taupenot has not been afraid to make ageworthy wines in 2012, but they aren't overly tannic or woody, just structured and well balanced. This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. Impressive and this comes highly recommended. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. The palate is better with a light spiced opening, good weight and cohesion with black pepper and sea salt infused red fruit. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle.

The 2012 Corton Rognet dazzles from start to finish. Tar, licorice, black cherries, smoke and spices burst from the glass as this exuberant, powerful Burgundy shows off its personality. The 2012 is rich, intense and massively structured, but all the elements are in the right place. Readers lucky enough to find the 2012 should plan on giving the wine a few years in the cellar. The 2015 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, raspberry preserve, crushed rose petals and just a hint of blood orange, quite sophisticated in style for a Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy tannin on the entry. This does not shortchange you on fruit: blackberry, raspberry and a pinch of white pepper, leading to a structured and quite grippy finish that like Taupernot-Merme's other 2015s, manages to retain impressive freshness and elegance. It has an incredibly long aftertaste, over a minute in the mouth and you can still feel this. Highly recommended.

Tart cranberry and raspberry flavors are complemented by saline minerality, with strong acidity accentuating the impression of inner-mouth tension. Like the domaine's La Combe d'Orveau, this Premier Cru sits high on a slope above Grand Crus. The vines averaged 44 years old for the 2020 vintage, with the larger part planted in 1974 and the smaller bit planted in 1986. The focused, pure nose smells of blackberry coulis and fresh flowers. The palate bustles with freshness and energy as the finely-hewn tannins frame the medium body. 2024-35

The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is comparatively deep in colour. The bouquet is surfeit with red berry fruit, briary and crushed stone aromas, all well defined and beautifully assimilated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black and red fruit, well judged acidity, clean and crisp with gentle grip on the finish. This is a superb Corton that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 30 closure)

The 2019 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru is quite strict and slightly ferrous on the nose, gradually opening with redcurrant and cranberry fruit, touches of orange blossom and pain d'épices. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lightly spiced with white pepper and cumin. Modest depth, it feels nicely focused with a persistent saline finish. Very fine

The 2020 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru has a very well-delineated bouquet, very terroir-driven, crushed stone infusing the red fruit a touch of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, taut and crisp, gently building towards quite a complex finish with touches of Early Grey infusing the red fruit, cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2021 Corton-Rognet Grand Cru comes from a single parcel. It has a pretty, pastille-like red cherry and raspberry scented nose that just needs a little more amplitude. The palate is quite spicy on the entry and here there is much more delineation and finesse than the aromatics imply, very cohesive and well-knit on the finish. Excellent.

Bright medium red. Musky soil tones, smoky minerality, coffee and black pepper on the nose, all lifted by a perfumed floral quality. Tart cranberry and raspberry flavors are complemented by saline minerality, with strong acidity accentuating the impression of inner-mouth tension. Not especially fleshy or broad but boasts terrific energy. The wine's firm tannic spine and strong minerality call for patience. Very 2013 in style.

Bright red. Classic 2014 lift to the aromas of red cherry, spices and rose petal. Juicy and penetrating, with vibrant cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry fruit flavors further sharpened by saline minerality. Still tightly wound, even a bit austere on the back end, this wonderfully brisk, sappy wine really stimulates the salivary glands.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is overly floral on the nose with raspberry, cranberry and light loamy aromas, more oyster shell scents emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with fine balance, very terroir-driven with great tension and vibrant red cherry and strawberry fruit bursting forth on the finish. Superb.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru is attractive and fresh on the nose, melted tar and pencil box scents percolating through the red and black fruit, a hint of orange rind with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely tuned with such pretty red cherry and wild strawberry notes on the tart finish. Taupenot referred to this as his "baby Bèze" - a perfectly apt description.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru has an airy, floral nose, with fine delineation, maybe not quite as precise as the Morey La Riotte by direct comparison. The palate is sweet and quite candied on the opening, sappy with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, an underlying sour cherry note lending tension on the finish. Modest length. Well crafted.
