(all destemmed): Medium red. Complex if reticent aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoked meat and pepper. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, showing hints of candied fruit. The chewy, firm but ripe tannins really clamp down on the finish today. A distinctly intellectual calcaire style of wine.

(Liger-Belair just bought this parcel on mostly clay and silt soil after years of farming it via a fermage arrangement; 50% vendange entier; just 20% of the crop was lost to frost): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe dark fruit aromas are complicated by strong soil notes of dried flowers (the veggie side of floral, says Liger-Belair), licorice and cut straw. More precise on the palate than the nose suggests, displaying the savory, sappy side of the vintage and very good intensity. Finishes with building, slightly dusty tannins and noteworthy energy. Not at all a rustic style of Gevrey, despite the fact that it's from a parcel on the wrong side of the Route Nationale.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Croix des Champs is more than 55% whole cluster. That stem addition comes across a little strongly on the nose and occludes the terroir profile. The medium-bodied palate offers firm tannins, plenty of red berry fruit laced with orange peel and slathers of marmalade, and a grippy finish with a light cola note on the aftertaste. Fine.

The 2018 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots is a mix of Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits Saint-Georges fruit, and it had been racked two weeks prior to my visit in December. It has a pretty raspberry and cranberry bouquet, floral in style, with subtle vanilla notes emerging with time; you cannot detect the 20% whole bunch. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit, and the whole bunch lends freshness and a subtle pepperiness toward the finish. Very fine.

Medium deep purple, the most complex of the three. Cherry in the foreground, red berries behind. The fruit soars to the back of the palate, filling the mouth, a light but adequate acidity, and tannins which are well ripened. Then another surge of fruit to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. (a new wine for Liger-Belair; vinified with 40% whole clusters and aging in 40% new oak): Bright medium ruby. Even darker on the nose than the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Les Trois Terroirs, offering scents of blackberry, violet and tropical dark chocolate and brown spice flavors. Rather relaxed in the middle palate considering the tiny yield of 12 hectoliters per hectare, but finishes with a firm dusting of tannins.

40% whole bunch vinification. Dense rich purple. The nose is startlingly fine in rich dark raspberry fruit. Les St-Georges was hailed on which seems just to concentrate the wine.

Tasted: November 2023.

The 2019 Bourgognes Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos du Prieuré, from the west side of Nuits Saint-Georges, has a taut nose that disguises the high alcohol (over 14.0°). The palate is very promising, offering dark berry fruit, good substance and candied orange peel toward the finish. The aromatics just have to open up by the time of bottling.

The palate is beautifully balanced with seamless tannin, superb acidity, the new oak present but seamless integrated with a satin-like finish that you might conflate with a wine from Vosne-Romanée. 40% whole bunch vinification. Dense rich purple. The nose is startlingly fine in rich dark raspberry fruit. Les St-Georges was hailed on which seems just to concentrate the wine. A massive wealth of fruit, drier at the back than the super saturated front, but that will come better into focus by the end of the elevage. Very promising. A light coffee note? Drink from 2032-2040. Good deep red. Pungent aromas of dark berries, crushed rock and exotic spices. Dense, tactile and sappy, with the energy to leaven its almost liqueur-like texture. All destemmed as Aux Réas has all the limestone freshness it needs. A dense dark purple, almost black in the centre. A little bit reduced which slightly dries the finish, but that will be sorted. Brilliant fruit between the two plenty of energy, a saline touch behind the dark red fruit. A fine crunchy finish as the wine cleans up in the glass. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023.
