James Suckling (93)On the nose this may not be a dramatic wine, but it's fresh and floral. It has a quiet confidence that is missing in many of the 2014 Barolos. On the palate, the turbocharger kicks in. The wine's impressive tannic power leaves most of the competition behind it, but there's real finesse at the long finish. Drink after 2020. |

James Suckling (95)Stunning rose-petal nose with hints of licorice and herbal tea. The palate has generosity, and the tannins have a polish that's rare in 2014 Barolos. If you like tannins, then you will agree with us that this is already delicious. It also has a long life ahead of it. Better after 2020. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Cicala is a powerful, deep wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, scorched earth, chocolate and searing tannins are some of the signatures. The Cicala has plenty of depth, but my instincts say it will mature before the tannins soften. I would prefer to drink this over the next decade, but readers need to expect that the balance is not ideal. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2013 Barolo Bussia Colonnello is the most ethereal and delicate of the Bussia series of wines. Fruit is sourced from a portion of the Bussia vineyard that is located closer to the village of Barolo (one kilometer away) than it is the village of Monforte d'Alba (five kilometers away). The sandy soils found here make for softer and tamer tannins especially when compared to the other parts of Bussia. The bouquet opens to aromas of blue flowers, spice, wild berry, licorice and white truffle. This is a softly nuanced and finessed Barolo made with fruit from 45-year-old vines. |

Vinous (92)The 2014 Barolo Colonnello is dark and inward. Succulent black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice, menthol and dark spice all run through this unctuous, super-concentrated Barolo. In most vintages, the Colonnello is a bit more aromatic and light on its feet, while the 2014 is a decidedly rich, heady wine, and yet all the elements are in the right place. |

Vinous (92)The 2015 Barolo Colonnello packs a serious punch. Macerated dark cherry, kirsch, spice, leather, licorice, blood orange and a kick of sweet oak all open up this powerful, strapping Barolo. The 2015 offers a good bit of immediacy, but there is plenty of tannin as well. The warmth of the year is evident in the wine’s ripe profile. |

Vinous (94)The 2016 Barolo Colonnello is a dark, bold, lush wine full of character. A blast of macerated black cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol infuses the 2016 with striking depth. Resonant and ample, with notable character, the Colonnello is gorgeous in this tasting. In fact, it's one of the finest Barolos I have tasted from the Conterno brothers in a number of years. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Colonello is heady, exuberant and super-expressive. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, incense and blood orange all race out of the glass. There is something exotic about the Colonello that I find quite alluring. This racy Barolo captures the exuberance of the year, but is not at all overdone. Early signs of maturity in the aromatics and flavors suggest it is a wine for near and medium-term drinking. |

Vinous (95)Good full medium red. Very ripe aromas of strawberry, licorice, minerals and truffle, with balsamic and dried floral nuances. Fat, sweet, rich and deep; at once succulent and seamless, with a wonderfully layered texture and great early appeal. Very full without coming across as weighty. The slow-building finish features substantial sweet tannins. Shows the magic side of 2001, Franco offers. It can keep for a long time but it's great right now. By the way, 2001 was the seventh consecutive vintage in which this wine was bottled, but there will be no '02, '03 or '04. |

Wine Advocate (97)This wine blew me away. The 2009 Barolo Riserva Granbussia is a proud achievement and an expression of rare beauty. This wine will be released this fall, some nine years after the harvest. Only 3,000 bottles were produced. The Granbussia narrative is one of elegance and refinement. The fruit comes from two vineyard parcels in the greater Bussia cru and was co-fermented (instead of being blended after malolactic fermentation). So much fruit was dropped during the summer growing cycle that the harvest came later than usual. This allowed for slow, even ripening and a deeper sense of aromatic complexity that you immediately identify here. The nose is redolent of wet earth and autumnal leaf with white truffle and forest berry. The wine offers extreme Nebbiolo purity with anise seed, tar and licorice. |
