    Tua Rita

    About Tua Rita

Founded by Rita and Virgilio in 1984, just as the Super Tuscan wave was taking off, Tua Rita started with just 2 hectares of Sangiovese and has now grown its acreage to around 30 hectares to include Bordeaux varieties and even Syrah.

With the rise of Sassicaia, it quickly became clear that Bolgheri was a region where international varietals could thrive. Tua Rita caught on and in 1988 added another 2 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to their holdings, some of which were initially sold to Sassicaia! The estate only began bottling their own wines in 1992 with the help of one of the best consultant oenologists in Italy, Luca D’Attoma. Together with the meticulous care and attention that Rita and Virgilio showered on their vines, Tua Rita quickly became one of the most successful Super Tuscans, standing toe to toe with the likes of Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia.

The 2017 Giusto di Notri is a special 25th anniversary bottling that is chiseled, sharp and focused. The small part of Merlot gives it some added sweetness (the percentage of Merlot was slightly reduced in this vintage), the touch of Cabernet Franc contributes the power, freshness and dark fruit, and along with a starring role of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has lots of beautiful plushness restrained by a tight, disciplined linearity. This vintage saw less time in barrique (about 16 months) but the barrels had more toasting. There is a lasting mineral note of chalk or limestone that frames the dark and opulence quality of fruit at its core. The bouquet is stunning. The wine treads lightly in the palate, with a very elegant and nuanced approach. It really is another gorgeous wine from Tua Rita that shows the profound skill of this winemaking team even when faced with a hot vintage such as this.

I had previously reviewed this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot in a preview capacity. Now on the market, the 2018 Giusto di Notri comes together with seamless beauty. This is a rich and generous expression that delivers dark fruit intensity with blackberry and black currant, wrapped tightly together with ample oak notes of spice, tar and cured tobacco. The wine offers smooth transition and rich textural fiber, with soft angles and contours that frame the wine's full-bodied approach. Production is 33,000 bottles.

Tua Rita's Redigaffi is one of the best reds to emerge from Italy and the 2008 vintage delivers all the promise and hope of previous editions. The wine is set apart by its enormous richness and deeply concentrated layers of sweet cherry fruit, chocolate, tobacco and cinnamon spice. Put this bottle in your cellar for ten years or more.

Fantastic aromas of red pepper, chocolate, chili, and blueberry. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a beautiful length and balance. A triumph for a difficult vintage in 2014. And the 20th vintage of this great pure merlot made. I am not sure I would wait on this one. Too delicious now.

This is a glorious young merlot with flowers, blackberries, hazelnuts and chocolate on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered and creamy with ripe and firm tannins. Wonderful depth and length. Better in 2022 and onwards, but already a glorious young red to try.

Lots of chocolate and berries, as well as spice, walnuts and vanilla. It’s full and layered. Extremely long and flavorful. So juicy and sexy. Luscious is the word. Opulent with polish and presence. Chewy at the end. Brightness and energy here. Try after 2022.

I tasted this wine a few times over the course of about four months, and it is lovely to see how well it has taken to bottle. The Tua Rita 2020 Redigaffi is the estate's headline wine made with Merlot. The bouquet sings with dark fruit, dried apricot, spice, leather and campfire ash. You taste that extra richness and concentration in this full-bodied red. On the palate, Redigaffi is soft and accessible with rich layering and texture.

Tua Rita's 2016 Syrah Per Sempre is fabulous. Crème de cassis, lavender, licorice, plum and blueberry jam are all beautifully delineated. Savory, powerful and also structured, the 2016 has plenty of intensity, but it also is not as dense or obvious as has been the case in the recent past. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2016 for at least a few years.

The 2017 Syrah Per Sempre is aromatically deep and so expressive. As always, what comes through is a heady wine that captures the personality of Syrah on the Tuscan coast, and yet the 2017 also possesses quite a bit of nuance. Black pepper, lavender, spice and chocolate wrap around a core of inky dark Syrah fruit.
