    Vincent Girardin

Over ten generations of Girardins originated in Santenay until 1982 when Jean Girardin split up the vineyards between his four children. His son, Vincent, bought more vineyards and began a negociant business moving to Meursault. There is an emphasis on purity of fruit with minimal oak in both the reds and whites. Approachable when young, the Grand Cru have the potential for cellaring.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanchot-Dessus 1er Cru come across a bit sultry on the nose despite coaxing. White flowers, fresh white linen and citrus scents eventually emerge. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and quite saline, perhaps it just need a little more complexity towards the finish, but otherwise this is well-crafted.

Pure powerful lemon yellow, and there is power too to the yellow fruit of the bouquet. Very backward in its elevage at the moment. Quite high acidity, this 2021 Blanchot has all the constituent parts, but not quite in place as yet. Drink from 2026-2031.

Clear pale colour, a refined and chiselled nose. A little quality oak now emerges to flesh out the bouquet. The fruit is very evenly distributed across the palate, still with an oak presence, a little sandalwood, a good mix between fruit and acidity, and a fine long finish. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Le Cailleret 1er Cru shows a little more reduction on the nose than the Morgeots, although there is good concentration here. The palate is quite vibrant on the entry with lemon zest, quince and a touch of orange pith. Plenty of energy, well focused with a saline finish, this is a fine Chassagne from Girardin.

Full primrose. There is an initial richness which cannot quite hide the stones beneath, nor should it. Terrific energy at the back of the palate, more so than Romanée, with fine length and the saline touch last seen in the Perrières. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru is more reserved on the nose, but well defined with crushed stone and touches of pressed flowers and chai. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, much more linear, almost Puligny-like in style thanks to the calcaire terroir on the finish. Vivid and animated.

A phenomenal Chassagne, but we have come to expect nothing else from Girardin in recent years. Fine-grained and mineral-driven with medium weight flavours and solid delineation on the complex and persistent finish. This is quite dry and intense given the heat of the vintage and sufficiently firm that we would suggest allowing it at least a few years of cellar time first.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose, crushed stone filtering through the yellow flower scents. The palate is well balanced with a crisp opening, very citric and zest with orange rind and a touch of squeezed lemon juice on the finish. I can imagine this matching a plate of oysters with style.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru comes from two parcels located down from Les Perrières. The vines are 65 years old, one parcel on SO4 rootstock that is particularly low-yielding. This has a pretty bouquet, understated at first and then unfolding to reveal crushed stone and yellow flower aromas. The palate is well balanced with a smooth, slightly honeyed opening, richer than the preceding Village Crus but nicely focused. Lemon curd and a touch of stem ginger toward the finish. A delicious Meursault to drink over the next 12–15 years.

The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru is noticeably pale in color. It has a voluminous, powerful nose with quite a generous slab of new oak, but there is plenty of fruit behind it, ready to absorb it with bottle age. The palate is fresh on the entry with vibrant acidity, and more malic than its peers, then taut and linear, with a vein of sour lemon mixed with spice toward the very persistent finish. Très Perrières. This deserves several years in a cool, damp cellar. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

5 Star Wine. The famous plot in 2021 because of the success in protecting the vines from frost when all around failed. The recipe was to light the bougies early and place them at double density, and replace if necessary during the night. This is really gorgeous. With a manged opulence, a perfect thread of mineral backbone, a finish that makes one salivate. A level of concentration over and above Perrières. Consider a 5th star – and say yes! From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru comes from bought must, the vines managed virtually organically except for one treatment during the growing season. This has a tightly wound, rather laconic bouquet that, despite coaxing, remains stubbornly mute. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh on the entry yet not quite achieving the same tension and nuance as the Puligny Champ Gain tasted alongside.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

From Ez Folatières, purchased as must. A lime streak runs through the mid yellow colour. This has notable density of bouquet without showing much detail yet. More substantial than the racy Pucelles, but retaining its own lively character behind the substantial flesh. Dense, generous, and with class. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru comes from bought must, the vines managed virtually organically except for one treatment during the growing season. This has a tightly wound, rather laconic bouquet that, despite coaxing, remains stubbornly mute. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh on the entry yet not quite achieving the same tension and nuance as the Puligny Champ Gain tasted alongside.
