    Vincent Paris

Vincent Paris is one of the most celebrated Cornas specialists, a “superstar of Cornas” making some of the “top wines in the appellation” (Wine Advocate). Paris is renowned for his ability to produce wines with exceptional vibrancy of fruit and intensity that continues from their youth right through their exceptionally lengthy drinking windows. The key here is that the prices for Domaine Vincent Paris have remained incredibly modest and thus they represent some of the best value in the whole of the Rhône.

Paris’s entry-level cuvee that comes from some of the lower slopes, the inky colored 2012 Cornas Granite 30 is a great bottle of wine that’s been an incredible value in the past couple of vintages. Classic Cornas, yet with a more approachable feel than the other cuvees, it has lots of wild herbs, saddle leather, garrigue, beef blood and currant-like fruit on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, impressively concentrated and ripe, it stays fresh, nicely focused and has enough structure to evolve for upward of a decade.

Initially restrained aromas of zesty blackberry in this wine gain intricacies of rose petal, violet, graphite and dusty mineral. Sourced from the producer's younger vines and gentler slopes, its black cherry and berry flavors are zesty and pure yet anchored by granite and fine, persistent tannins. Ready now the wine should improve through 2030 and hold further.

Opaque ruby. Fresh blackberry and cherry scents, along with suggestions of baking spices, olive and pungent flowers. Appealingly sweet black and blue fruit flavors gain energy and spiciness with air while a smoky mineral element adds back-end cut. Even tannins add gentle grip to an impressively long, floral-tinged finish that leaves a spicy note behind.

Dark violet color. Dark berry preserve, licorice, olive and exotic spice aromas, with a hint of espresso in the background. Sappy and broad on the palate, offering spice-tinged cherry-cola, blueberry and candied violet flavors with a spicy snap of black pepper. The floral note carries through a very long, dark fruit-driven finish, where gently chewy tannins add shape and closing grip.

The 2013 Cornas Granit 60 Vieilles Vignes is another terrific red from this estate that shows the vintage’s more fresh, juicy and elegant style nicely. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of violets, juicy berry fruits, crushed rock and pepper. medium-bodied with good but not great concentration, nicely integrated acidity and fine tannin, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 10-12 years.

Lieux-dits Patou, Mazard and Sauman, 70% destemmed, aged for 15 months in old barriques. A nose that draws you in and pulls you under; it’s very tightly wound for now, but contains fresh, ripe black fruits, Asian spices, soy and some woodland aromas. Full-bodied, but not massive or overly thick, it coats the palate in super-fresh fruit and very fine tannins. There is ample acidity too to help shape the wine. This is very powerful, but what hits you is the extraordinary aromatic and textural refinement of what can be an untameable terroir. Very, very long, saline finish.

Tasted from tank prior to bottling, the 2016 Cornas Granit 60 has the potential to eclipse the 2015. The nose is an exciting blend of flowers, minerals and fruit, while the palate is full-bodied and generous without the hardness or austerity of the 2015. This standout 2016 finishes long, plush and bright. With only about 5,000 bottles made, shrewd buyers will snap it up on release.

Juicy and seamless in texture, offering appealingly sweet blackberry and boysenberry flavors underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Paris's 2018 Cornas Granit 60 boasts remarkably pure notes of cracked pepper, blueberries and raspberries. Full-bodied, lush and creamy, it perfectly captures the ripe essence of Syrah, then adds a firm grounding of crushed stone and firm tannins on the finish. It should have close to two decades of longevity.

Deeply pitched blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors convey a suave blend of power and finesse; a pastille flourish adds complexity. My favorite of the trio (but not by much), the 2012 Cornas la Geynale normally is not destemmed, but in this vintage, no stems were used. Coming from a single plot of 100-year-old vines near the bottom of the famed Reynard lieu-dit and aged 18 months in older barrels, it’s a rock-star Cornas that exhibits a black/purple color to go with a huge bouquet of pepper, meat juice, black currants, wild herbs and crushed rock. Fabulously concentrated, full-bodied, rich and with stunning purity, it will need short-term cellaring and keep for 15-20 years.

(vines over 100 years old vines and no new oak) Brilliant purple. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, Asian spices, incense, smoky minerals and olive paste. Deeply concentrated yet lively boysenberry, cherry pie, spicecake and bitter chocolate flavors are underscored by a building mineral quality. Shows a compelling blend of depth and litheness and finishes on a youthfully tannic note, displaying remarkable clarity and insistent mineral character. I don't think I have ever tasted as profound a wine as this one from Vincent Paris, who seems to be one of the most underrated and under-the-radar producers in the northern Rhône.

Le Geynale is the producer's flagship Cornas sourced from top vineyard sites and old vines. Black cherry and plum flavors are dense and potent but nuanced by violet perfume and layers of iron, graphite and dried herb. Ripe, integrated tannins are appealing already but this massively complex wine begs further cellar age. It should reward drinking through 2040, likely further.

The 2018 Cornas La Geynale is largely in the same style as the Granit 60, only with the gamey, bloody and meaty character (as well as tannins) turned up a notch. Black and blue fruits, rare meat, ground pepper, and wild herbs all give way to a structured, tannic wine that has beautiful purity and elegance. It's not for those looking for instant gratification, however. This cuvée comes from a single parcel, is not destemmed, and will see 16 months in 2- to 8-year-old barrels.

A wine that fizzes and sparks with crackling berry fruits and dried herbs. Full-bodied but not massive in the mouth, this has soaring power and energy. Perfectly balanced, with searing, mouth-coating, super-fine tannin. A wine like a thunder crack that takes you by surprise, it shocks the palate. Long finish. This is an exceptional vintage for Vincent Paris. 100-year-old vines. No destemming. Five-day cold maceration, then fermented with wild yeasts. Twice daily remontage, no punching down, then aged for 16 months in two to eight-year-old barriques. Grown on the granite slopes of lieu-dit La Geynale, one of the finest of the appellation.
