Zind Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in the Alsace, was created in 1959 continuing the Humbrecht family’s history of wine growing for three centuries. It is now managed by Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to become a master of wine. They were certified as organic in 1998. Their wine ages excellently.

Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Windsbuhl 2004 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

In the event, his fears were unfounded, as the warmth of September proved to have been sufficient for an outstanding 2004 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl. Mint, honey, caramelized celery root in the nose segue into a palate of creamy richness, considerable delicacy, and only subtle sweetness (from 14.5 grams residual sugar), dominated by alkaline, saline, marine, iodine-inflected mineral elements. This is the most remarkably juicy, refreshing, and indeed delicate of the lot of Humbrecht ’04 Gewurztraminer, and its finish is among the most perfumed, lip-smacking in fruit yet also most thought-provoking in its mysterious mineral and animal aspects of any of Humbrecht’s 2004s. I would not disagree with him when he characterizes its balance as “perfect,” yet there is no doubt this balance could hold for many years if not decades, and I certainly keenly anticipate following its evolution and the additional complexity that is almost sure to come.

Wine Enthusiast (95)

Hints of gunpowder and flint mix with a subtle but sonorous tone of Damask rose on the nose of this wine. The palate brings a much brighter, lemony note of sunny peach ripeness, suggesting the juiciness of peach compote. The purity of flavor is highlighted by lemony accents that frame this generous, nectar-like wine. Drink 2025–2050.

Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 2007 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

Like the Riesling, the apricot-colored 2007 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl is an austere wine on both nose and palate. The bouquet of my sample (which was provided by a German retailer) is still fresh and vital, but reveals some oxidative old-style Rioja flavors along with matured aromas of oranges, lemons, black bread, mushrooms and dried apricots. Quite dry but intense on the palate and provided with a pronounced, not very well integrated acidity, this full-bodied 15% alcohol wine is surely no crowd-pleaser in its austerity, but a complex and interesting Pinot Gris with food. Probably I did not have the best bottle.

Wine Enthusiast (94)

The creamy juiciness of freshly cut, ripe Williams pear dances appetizingly on the nose of this wine. Fruit purity is also apparent on the palate, imbued by vivid, rounded juiciness and supported by a lovely backdrop of pithy, slightly phenolic texture. This adds grace and backbone and lets the juicy pear notes express themselves fully. The finish is wonderfully dry and lasting.

Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg 2019 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (95)

This self-confidently atypical pinot gris has astonishing acidity that’s got the intensity of a lightning strike. Tons of pineapple and toast character, but also gigantic, lemony freshness at the exceptionally bright finish. May be too extreme for some, but we find this amazing. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Vinous (96)

One of the standouts in this range, the 2018 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is incredibly vivid in the glass. Time in the glass brings out myriad layers of flavor and dimension. Orange confit, crushed rocks, mint and more exotic notes all meld together in an airy, weightless wine that has so much to offer. The 2018 is at once intense but also carries itself with a real sense of grace.

James Suckling (98)

This dry riesling masterpiece is full of seeming contradictions that give it a sense of mystery you very rarely find. So rich and concentrated, yet also astonishingly vivid and precise, the aromas range from smoke to roses, although the most obvious note is the peachy one up front. Breathtakingly long and complete finish with so much mineral complexity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
