Finca Valdepoleo is one of the most emblematic vineyards of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza. Counting 17.5ha in size, this site is found at 630m altitude and has been planted with vines since 1973. The wine it produces is a clear example of the nature of the area in which it is located, given a modernistic personal touch by Carlos San Pedro.
Representing the modern winemaking school, this outstanding bottling was fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, followed by one year of maturation in French oak barrels before release.
With a focus on preserving the freshness and purity of the fruits, the resulting wine is a “captivating” Tempranillo expression that Luis Gutiérrez believes “is the finest vintage for this vineyard bottling”. Both “elegant, subtle and pure, floral and aromatic”, this beauty scores an impressive 94+pts from Wine Advocate and 94pts from Decanter. Tim Atkin MW has even picked this up as his “Wines of the Year” in his 2022 Rioja Report. Thoroughly enjoyable now, but with the capacity to age until 2026
The single-vineyard red 2018 Finca Valdepoleo follows the line of the 2016, two cooler years. It's a fairly large plot that was planted in 1973 in the village of Laguardia on limestone and clay soils at 630 meters in altitude. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and also with some stems (something they don't normally do), and it matured in French oak barrels for one year. The finesse of this wine captured me, and I believe this is the finest vintage for this vineyard bottling. When I poured the whole range and had a quick look at all the wines, this one made me raise my eyebrows. It's elegant, subtle and pure, floral and aromatic, really expressive and captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and nicely integrated oak. It's a modern version of the 2013. Truly outstanding. 60,000 bottles produced.

Based in Laguardia, Pujanza produces an accomplished range of Riojas. This is from the 17.5ha Valdepoleo vineyard, planted in 1973 at 630m. Fermented with indigenous yeast, it spends 12 months in French oak, which creates an subtle framework for an elegant palate, with beautifully integrated tannins. Lovely purity of fruit – cherries, blackberry, fresh plums – and freshness, with a hint of florality and a touch of salinity on the finish. So enjoyable!

Awarded the unofficial, yet significant, rank of Rioja First Growth by Tim Atkin MW, Bodegas Pujanza is a force to be reckoned with in Spain’s foremost vinous region standing shoulder to shoulder with formidable names from La Rioja Alta to Artuke.
Hailed by many as a specialist in “modern” Rioja, winemaker and proprietor Carlos San Pedro finds this to be something of a misnomer considering his inspiration is in fact the old ways of Rioja. Moving the focus away from the winery, with its regional propensity for heavy American oaking, and shifting it towards the vineyard and a quest to express the stunning terroir of Rioja, Bodegas Pujanza crafts particularly transparent and pure Tempranillo.
Nestled in Laguardia, the heart of Rioja Alavesa, San Pedro harks back to the noble tradition in this particular corner of Rioja of exceptionally elegant wines, noted for their beguiling perfume and greater nuance. Having founded this grand estate at the tender age of 25, the winemaker is as passionate as any vigneron about the future of Rioja and its place amongst the very greatest fine wine regions. Currently working 40 hectares of the finest vines in Laguardia, Carlos San Pedro cites his ultimate ambition as making elegance, subtlety and purity synonymous with Rioja, as opposed to mass-production and overbearing oak.
