A full range of fruits can be seen with the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. Red, black and blue fruit are all present on the nose, with oak tones hiding in the back as well as subtle earth and cigar box aromas. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, dark cherry, cassis and juicy blueberry glide across the mid-palate, showing integrated soft, earthy aromas of leather and inorganic rock, ending with a long finish. This is a pleasing and structured Cabernet with a focused balance. The wine spent 22 months in oak barrels, 35% new. 8,040 bottles were made.

Pale gold-tinged yellow. Slightly musky, subdued scents of pineapple and fig. Broad, plush and dry, conveying serious palate presence and a suggestion of spicy oak that gives the finish a bit of phenolic firmness. A rather uncompromising Chenin Blanc, notable more for its texture than for its lift or fruit definition.

The 2015 Syrah 393 includes 10% whole bunch fruit and was matured for 12 months in 40% new fine-grain French oak with a light toasting, and then transferred into used oak for another nine months. It has a very attractive bouquet of blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and vanilla scents that are pure and opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, and quite harmonious and smooth, delivering good density while not compromising on fruit. This is still quite backward and deserves another couple of years in bottle, but there is good potential here.

The cooling mint and incisive nips of cress observed in some other Thanisch bottlings from this vintage are, rather surprisingly, also present in a Doctor wine, as is downright refreshing primary juiciness. That said, the opulently ripe fruit character – tending toward honeydew and Persian melons – as well as musky narcissus scents and textural richness on a glycerol-slicked palate are all typical Doctor. The sustained finish, modest in sweetness, perpetuates a combination of caress with stimulation and of richness with refreshment.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2015 Reserva Conde de Vimioso is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Aragonez and the rest Syrah, aged for 18 months in oak ranging from new to third use. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Concentrated, beautifully structured and rather on the powerful side on opening, this is not quite ready to drink, although you could certainly approach it now. With an hour of air, it actually drank very well. Another year or two in the cellar would help it, though. It went like this: on opening, a bit oaky and not ready; after an hour, beautiful. Add a couple of points to the score. Leave it on the table for three hours and then let it air in a glass for half an hour—gorgeous. Add more points. Of the Tejo onslaught this issue, this was probably my favorite. The oak is a bit prominent now, but it doesn't come close to subsuming the nuanced fruit. That first hour of aeration lets the mid-palate absorb the wood very well. The complex flavor medley runs from blueberries to beef. The mid-palate eventually shows some fine finesse, although this is certainly burlier than its unoaked sibling this issue. This well-crafted red is a refined and silky beauty with a bit of a crisp edge. I suspect that it will eventually show far more complexity as well. This is not imported, so the price is just an estimate.

Mango and muskmelon on the nose announce that this will be ripe-tasting Kabinett even by Zilliken standards. But a cooling, juicy surge of fresh lime nicely tempers the tropical and musky fruitiness on a creamy, buoyant palate. As so often at this address, high (here, 69 grams!) residual sugar is checked almost magically for an impression of measured and ideally supportive sweetness on the lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. This bottling (setting aside their “Butterfly”) is where the volume lies in the Zillikens’ 2015 collection, representing as it does a dozen hundred-liter Mosel fuders.

Molitor has bypassed the usual “two-star” rendition of Klosterberg Pinot and instead classified the 2015 installment as “three-star.” On the nose, decidedly meaty, marrowy savor joins the shrimp-shell stock familiar from the corresponding Mandelgraben: you know that the palate is going to be rich in proteins and minerals! But there is abundant red currant and sour cherry fruit, too, which translates into welcome tang and refreshing brightness. The feel is firm and slightly grainy. Rose hip, cherry pit and smoky black tea add interest to a mouthwateringly salt-tinged, impressively persistent finish, albeit one capped with just a hint of extraneous toasted oak. This should gain significantly in bottle.

Greg Sherwood MW (96)

Deep, dark and broody, this wine speaks with all the authority and confidence of a 5 star block buster vintage. Brimming with black menthol cassis, boiled black berry sweets, black cherry and tight grained cedar spice, this wine wears a super hero gown of graphite and stony minerality and whispers quality from the moment it hits the glass. Tight, focused and impressively compact, there is a seamless saline black currant balance with linear polished marble tannins and a super intense concentration. This is the culmination of years of winemaking refinement and is without doubt the finest red wine produced to date at the Glenelly Estate revealing the true terroir quality potential of these groomed, premium Stellenbosch vineyards. Drink from Release with decanting and over the next 20+ years.

Vinous (92)

Fresh cherry and lime garlanded in lily and laced with basil, mint and wintergreen inform a perfumed nose and a lusciously juicy, polished, buoyant, coolingly herbal palate. Freshness and vivacity are the watchwords for a refreshingly lingering, multifaceted finish underlain by wet stone and supportively but only subtly kissed with sweetness. Given 9 percent alcohol, one can be sure that the residual sugar is at a modest levels, yet there is all of the levity one could wish for from a Kabinett.

James Suckling (95)

Probably the finest 2015 spätlese from J.J. Prum, but the nose is still a bit closed. Sensational clarity and vibrancy on the palate, the mineral finish super-long and refined. Better from 2018 and a long future ahead of it.

A complex and serious wine showing layered aromas of cedar wood, blackcurrants, blue berries, tea leaves and graphite on the nose. Subtle oak spice and savoury notes add further complexity. The palate is rich and full bodied, with pin-point balance between fruit and oak. The elegant and refined tannin structure is supported by intense flavours of cassis, cured meat and tomato stew. A lingering finish completes a true Cape classic wine!

The maiden 2015 Amphitheatre has an intense bouquet of dark cherries, star anise, camphor and wild heather scents, all well defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fleshy ripe red fruit laced with white pepper and sage, fanning out wonderfully toward the finish. This is a beautiful maiden release, exuding breeding and class, from Alex Starey at Keermont.

Vinous (92)

Issuing solely from a parcel planted in 1964, this leads with Sauvignon-like pungency of mint and pennyroyal, allied to an anticipation of the apple and lime that brightly inform a silken-textured palate. The superbly sustained finish cools and refreshes in its amalgam of juicy, resinous green-herb- and chalk-infused fresh fruit.

Decanter (98)

An historical wine, Vin de Constance has been re-established in the last few years as one of the world’s finest sweet wines. Dried Muscat grapes are aged for three years before bottling, in French and Hungarian casks with a touch of acacia wood. Citrus, orange zest, rosewater and spice notes leap out of the glass. The palate has a laser-like focus with massive sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity and a mineral finish. As impressive as Château d’Yquem (and considerably better value).

Vinous (91)
