The sites from which this Brunello is sourced are South or Southwest facing, ensuring that despite their lofty situation they achieve ripeness without excessive sugar. Relatively classic in style – music to the ears of true Brunello devotees – San Polo is aged in a combination of new and used 500 litre French Oak barrels. Firm but not invasive wood, the oak is a mere seasoning to the exceptionally pure and focused fruit.
A rich, layered red with blackberry and chocolate, as well as cured-meat and wet-earth undertones. It’s full-bodied with depth, intensity and focus. Lovely, velvety tannins and a long, creamy-textured mouth feel. Generous finish with tension. Better than 2015. Try after 2024.

Aromas of underbrush, rose petal, new leather and wild mint shape the nose. The savory, elegantly structured palate shows ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and cinnamon framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it radiant. Drink 2023–2036.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is highly aromatic with sweet cherry fruit, aniseed, fresh flowers, and tomato leaf. The palate is brisk with fresh tea leaf, orange zest, and tart raspberry. It is medium-bodied with a drying tannic structure. Approachable and polished, you should feel welcome to open this now or over the next 10-15 years. 2021-2035

The San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino brings forth dark fruit, cherry, spice, integrated oak tones and balsam herb. This is a round and lightly textured Sangiovese with a long and polished finish. In fact, the mouthfeel delivers more in terms of length and persistence than it does density or richness. It offers a silky, almost glossy disposition that is colored by dried raspberry, wild cherry and blue flower. This wine represents a selection of the best fruit from across various parcels farmed by this estate. Production is 30,000 bottles.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is very expressive, contrasting zesty dried citrus against ripe plum and strawberries with hints of wild herbs. It’s silky and rich, showing depths of fleshy red fruits yet with a sour twang of spiced orange and inner earth tones creating a fully satisfying expression. A subtle tug of fine tannin lingers, yet the 2016 San Polo won’t require much time to come fully into focus.
