With new leadership in place since 2017, wines of Château Troplong Mondot has seen a incremental improvement in quality which is clearly manifested in the 2020 vintage. Earning record scores from James Suckling (98-99 points) and Jane Anson (97 points), the 2020 vintage has “superb depth and intensity” behind loads of “black fruit, together with black pepper and salt” (Suckling). Anson finds “crushed blackcurrant and blackberry fruits” followed by “crushed rock minerality”.

“Not without its challenges, 2020 was a great vintage to continue the upward trajectory and unveiling of the new expression of this very special site at Troplong Mondot—and what an exhilarating ride this is!” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Calling it one of the finest vintages in recent years, Jeb Dunnuck (96-98 points) notes “powerful, unevolved aromas and flavors of pure crème de cassis, black cherries, graphite, gravelly earth, and tobacco” and concludes that “it’s going to be incredibly long-lived”. Affirming the pedigree of the Troplong Mondot 2020, Antonio Galloni notes how the 2020 vintage is “endowed with terrific depth and plenty of layers that unfold over time”, calling it “another strong showing”.

Producer

This Saint Émilion estate was owned by the Valette family between 1936 and 2017. Christine Valette took over in 1980 and she was a major force for innovation and sustainable practices at this estate. This Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) has undergone a radical transformation since 2017 when it was acquired by the SCOR French reinsurance group under the leadership of new Managing Director Aymeric de Gironde (previously at Cos d'Estournel). The property's roots go right back to the c17th. The name comes from Robert Troplong, owner in 1850. The 37 hectare vineyard of Troplong Mondot is planted with 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. Troplong Mondot occupies great terroir situated on top of the Saint Émilion plateau and slopes, at an elevation that allows views of the entire Émilion village. Since 2017 the wine has undergone a transformation. Today, picking is earlier, there is greater focus on a parcel by parcel approach at harvest, no SO2 is used until the wine goes into barrel. Troplong Mondot remains a big, broad-shouldered Saint-Émilion, but now it also has more energy and vibrancy than in the past.
