A wine that is "impressive, as always", according to the Wine Advocate's Stephen Reinhardt, scoring 94 points, the Vacheron Sancerre les Romains 2019 comes from the eastern part of the Sancerre appellation, at 320 metres above sea level, just across the river from Pouilly-Fumé. This proximity to Pouilly-Fumé is very evident as the silex soils add an amazing smokey, flinty quality to the wine.
Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and coming from up to 60 year old vines, this "elegant, refined, balanced and refreshingly mineral Les Romains" is "rich and powerful" (WA) on the palate. While there are pretty aromatics, it is also "seriously structured" with a "stimulating grip" (WA) suggesting it has the ageing capabilities more like the great whites of Burgundy than most Sauvignon Blanc we are use to.
From 20- to 50-year-old vines in a south/southwest-facing vineyard, the 2019 Sancerre Les Romains offers a pure yet intense and iodine-scented bouquet of shells and oysters along with algae aromas. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is an elegant, refined, balanced and refreshingly mineral Les Romains with a long, juicy, pretty aromatic, seriously structured and persistent salty finish with stimulating grip. Impressive, as always. Tasted in February 2021.

The 2019 Sancerre Les Romains is made in a supple, full style with a sense of lightness. It has the balance of a gymnast and a fine texture. The satisfying, mouthwatering, refined finish features delicate fragrances of chamomile and lemon.
