Vinous - Neal Martin (92)

The 1959 Batailley mirrors previous encounters with this Pauillac. It has a typically opulent bouquet that is the signature of the vintage with mulberry and boysenberry fruit, juniper berries and thyme. I find this example less meaty than previous bottles, though. The palate is well defined with fine tannin, quite tensile with cedar and graphite towards the finish. It does not quite possess the panache of the 1961, which can be marvelous on the day. But I appreciate the generosity after so many years. Tasted at the château.

An aroma highly suggestive of freshly brewed tea and ripe tangerines suggests overripeness. On the palate, the wine is diffuse, lacking direction, and is somewhat watery and uninteresting. This is a curious and unappealing rendition of Batailley. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 2/79.

The 1982 Batailley is a vintage that has never quite met my expectations. Now at almost four decades old, I find that the aromatics lack the fruité of its peers, also compared to the superior 1989. Earthy, dried leaves and light smoky aromas gently waft from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins and vestiges of red fruit, a little sour now, but it fades a little towards the peppery finish. This used to be knitted together, but now it feels a little frayed at the seams. Tasted at the château.

The 1996 d'Armailhac is fully mature on the nose with dark plum, briary, cloves and quite a strong violet aroma. The palate is slightly aggressive on the entry with chalky tannin. The acidity is quite pronounced here, firm in the mouth, masculine for d'Armailhac with less flesh than other vintages, although there is decent freshness and spiciness towards the finish. You could drink this now but I might just afford it another 3-4 years to show its mettle. Tasted July 2016.

Located in the north of Pauillac, between Mouton and Pontet-Canet, this 123-acre estate is also part of G.F.A. Baronne Philippine de Rothschild. The aroma balances meaty fruit and mineral scents, and while the pungent red fruit is always there, the tannins seem to increase their intensity with air. They cover the pure black cherry flavor like a powerful skin, deep and plush with an iron-knuckle punch. The tannins don't go away, but their inner velvet eventually wins out. This has improved significantly since the en primeur tastings and will continue to evolve for ten to 15 years in the bottle.

The 2009 Grand Puy Lacoste is one of the great vintages from this estate in the modern era. It storms from the glass with scents of blackberry, undergrowth, cedar and mint, retaining the classicism of GPL. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious with a gorgeous, lithe, graphite infused finish that lingers in the mouth. Bon vin. Tasted blind at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting.

Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. It's a very classic Pauillac and a wine that can still improve with additional cellaring.

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (90)

(73% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.11 g/ltotal acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red with a hint of garnet at the rim. Crème de cassis complemented by floral, tobacco and incense notes on the brightly aromatic nose. Very well balanced, clean, and juicy, with good inner-mouth perfume and energy to the dark fruit, cedar, herb and graphite flavors. The finish features mounting tannins that teeter on the brink of drying. This seems to have picked up some flesh and volume with bottle age, but I hope the fruit outlives the tannins. It's a lovely wine that lacks only the power of the best vintages.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is all about the detail and precision in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth: lightly toasted black fruit, dried orange peel, cedar and a pinch of white pepper. This feels very cohesive and poised with just a touch of mint entering right on the finish. What a great wine from Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme. Unquestionably one of the gems in the vintage is the 2008 Pontet-Canet, which reminds me of the 2005 with its concentrated, deep, powerful style. Beautiful dark fruits, graphite, obvious minerality, and classic Pauillac lead pencil notes all emerge from this still youthful, full-bodied, and pure 2008 that’s 4-5 years away from maturity and will keep for 30+ years. Hats off to Alfred Tesseron for another awesome wine that ranks up with the crème de la crème of the vintage.

The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% oak barriques and 45% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with an atomic perfume of raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles, rose oil and Chinese five spice, giving way to suggestions of cinnamon stick, dusty soil, pencil lead and underbrush. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate is a hedonist's dream, delivering layer-upon-layer of black and red berry preserves with loads of fragrant accents, a beautifully firm yet plush texture and tons of freshness, finishing long with a whole firework display of exotic spices. This is pretty much out-of-the-gate delicious, but it has the backbone to evolve over three decades or more.
