Good full red. Pure, sappy aromas of red fruits, minerals, spices and flowers. Creamy on entry, then dense and sweet but rather backward in the middle, offering excellent focus but a distinctly restrained character. This smoky, minerally wine boasts a fairly substantial structure and will require patience.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Richebourg 2011 has a more extravagant, bold, multilayered bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, hints of undergrowth and light marine influences coming in to play: very complex. The palate still has some unresolved oak on the entry, but there is great tension and vibrancy here, the tannins fine and lending this great tension. I would not broach a bottle now because there is so much to give in the future. Just like in the blind Amoureuses tasting in Holland, here Bichot proves itself as one of the top-flight producers. Bravo!

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Derrière La Grange 1er Cru has a vibrant, quite peppery bouquet thanks to the whole bunch addition, well defined with freshly-tilled loam filtering through the black and red fruit. The palate is well defined with succulent tannins, slightly confit-like with figgy notes on the finish.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru uses 15% whole bunch from the 25-year-old vines (the rest are 10 years old). It has a fragrant, elegant bouquet of blackberry, briar, sage and subtle oxtail aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very fine tannins, and here the Les Amoureuses character really shines. Veins of blue fruit and spices burst through on the finish. There is an appealing crescendo to this wine and it should age with style and panache.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has an intense, quite penetrating bouquet with copious black cherry and cassis scents interwoven with rose petal and violet aromas. The palate is quite dense and multi-layered with dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf that builds towards quite a backward finish that will requite 8-10 years to reach its drinking window. A lot of wine in this Clos Vougeot.

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36

Blackberries and black currants mesh with violets and sweet herbs on the nose. The palate turns a bit darker with fresh mushrooms and damp earth. There's even an exotic whiff of incense. There is terrific sap and energy here with lean, svelte tannins and racy acidity aplenty for longevity. This comes from 60- to 70-year-old vines in Les V roilles, positioned between DRC and Leroy. 2024-38

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru was buttoned down when I tasted it, the 100% new oak keeping a lid on the red berry fruit behind this wall. The palate is grippy on the entry with chunky red berry fruit (cranberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate) mixed with white pepper and sage notes towards the stocky finish. Like other 2015s from the domaine, I would like more terroir expression, more personality to be expressed.

The 2018 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru comes from a single plot of around half a hectare in the lieu-dit of La Pièce Sous La Bois. It conveys superb terroir expression, almost Puligny-like in its evocation of wet, cold limestone, wet pavement after a sudden shower and light lemon peel elements. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry, a fine bead of acidity slicing through the intense citrus and orange peel notes, which segue into a quite a spicy ginger-tinged finish. I just want more on the aftertaste, which disappears quicker than I would like.

The 2018 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru conveys more discipline on the nose compared to the Genevrières, offering walnut and light nutmeg notes, a hint of lanolin in the background and later a discreet petrolly note. The palate possesses the taut line of acidity necessary to counterbalance the intensity and richness of this Charmes. It feels long and generous toward the finish, where hints of stem ginger and grilled almonds linger on the aftertaste. This should offer 12–15 years of drinking pleasure, possibly more.
