Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Derrière La Grange 1er Cru has a vibrant, quite peppery bouquet thanks to the whole bunch addition, well defined with freshly-tilled loam filtering through the black and red fruit. The palate is well defined with succulent tannins, slightly confit-like with figgy notes on the finish.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru uses 15% whole bunch from the 25-year-old vines (the rest are 10 years old). It has a fragrant, elegant bouquet of blackberry, briar, sage and subtle oxtail aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very fine tannins, and here the Les Amoureuses character really shines. Veins of blue fruit and spices burst through on the finish. There is an appealing crescendo to this wine and it should age with style and panache.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed a little reduction on the nose, but there were some quite intense red fruit underneath that should blossom once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly toasty entry, fine depth and acidity with a slightly chalky finish that just needs a little more persistence. I think this year, Arlaud’s Morey-Saint-Denis Village has the upper hand.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from north-facing vineyards toward the upper slopes the last vines to ripen, as they can lie in the shade. Containing 80% whole bunch fruit, it has a well-defined, slightly tertiary bouquet with touches of black pepper and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate presents fresh red fruit, lightly spiced with white pepper, sage and a touch of tobacco, perhaps a little Morey-like in structure, but with a very long finish. Excellent.

(from old, degenerating vines, part on thin, rocky soil and part on deeper soil) Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry, smoke and sexy oak tones on the nose. Wine Advocate (92)

Cocoa powder-dusted ripe black raspberry mingles with dark forest floor elements; roasted, subtly caramelized potato skins; and bloody red meat in the fascinating de Vogue 2007 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. Caressing, rounded richness and sheer generosity characteristic for the entire vintage collection at this address by no means precludes admirable buoyancy and intriguing as well as enticing persistence that compels the next sniff and sip. This should be well worth following for at least 6-8 years, and will in that course of time doubtless more obviously distance itself from the corresponding village-level bottling. But while I may underestimate its longevity, it would I think be a shame if one waited to embrace this Pinot until the youthful bloom was not longer in its cheeks. Unfortunately – a not uncommon circumstance at this address – I was unable to taste the rare de Vogue Les Amoureuses of the vintage.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremieres is rich, seductive and incredibly primary, with little in the way of aromatic expressiveness. This is the first wine of these 2009s that is closed in on itself. With time in the glass hints of red cherries and flowers begin to emerge, yet this remains an implosive wine in need of considerable cellaring. The depth of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins are impossible to miss, but this multi-dimensional wine begs for patience.

The 1989 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with lovely floral/incense and iris aromas that combine beautifully with the black cherry and boysenberry scents, a little iodine emerging later. The palate is very well balanced with good depth, again quite floral in style with supple tannin. Maybe it lacks the elegance of the 2002 Les Amoureuses but it feels velvety smooth and offers just perfect salinity on the finish that makes you coming back for another sip. The 1994 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is an odd wine in what I feel was not Christophe's finest year. Rather odd aromas of pepper, herbs, asparagus and horseradish. Then full, layered and sweet in the mouth, but with an intrusive vegetal quality hiding the site character. Tannins are nicely ripe. Roumier had to use commercial yeast skins to finish a stuck fermentation. He admits that the yeasts brought a foreign flavor to the wine, and he fined and coarsely filtered it prior to bottling. Still, he believes this Amoureuses will be better for time in bottle. We shall see.

Good full red. Captivating aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and white pepper. Suave on entry, then sappy and silky in the middle palate, with superb lift and precision to the flavors of wild dark berries and flowers. Offers an uncanny combination of power, complexity and gracefulness. About as far from the compact, thick Ruchottes (which is like a big steak) as a wine could be. Wonderfully fine-grained wine with a finish that's like the second stage of a booster rocket. This will probably be at its best between 2012 and 2025.

The 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is a vintage that I have not encountered previously. There is certainly fine intensity on the nose with raspberry and Morello cherry scents, appearing later crushed stone and rose petal notes. That Amoureuses sensuality really comes through. The palate is smooth and velvety with fine tannins. It is not the most complex Les Amoureuses that Christophe Roumier has ever produced, but certainly one of the most drinkable (however banal that reads.) Wonderful, though I would be inclined to drink it in the near future. Tasted at Xmas lunch at Trinity restaurant.

Vinous (93)
