Wine Advocate (96)Aubert de Villaine and his team harvested their 2006 Montrachet on September 26, and it was bottled (as a single assemblage) at the end of 2007. High-toned peach, lemon oil, musk, and floral aromas mark the penetrating, ethereal nose. Smoky, peach kernel pungency weaves its way through nutty, peachy richness on the palate. Less obviously dense, rich and sappy than the extraordinary 2005, this 2006 for all of its sheer viscosity and ripeness, displays a dynamic, almost shimmering sense of fruit and mineral interplay. Intriguingly, in my initial – November, 2007 tasting – this effect was more pronounced from a barrel that had been rolled to disburse the lees than in one that had undergone conventional batonnage. The youthful 2006 reflects its new wood environment in a way that the 2005 – at similar stages in its evolution – did not. There is no lack here of the mystery that should be expected from one of the world’s most fabled and expensive wines, not just in the paradox of viscosity, richness and power combined with elegance, lift, and refinement; but also in nuances that left me groping the lexicon for animal or mineral descriptors. |

Burghound (98)A more reserved nose grudgingly reveals its even more floral-infused aromas of clove, anise, exotic tea, petrol and enough wood to mention. The exceptionally rich and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors brim with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the even firmer acid spine shaping the redoubtably powerful and almost painfully intense finish that seems to have no end. This is absolutely brilliant and one of the brightest highlights of the vintage though note well that as is typically the case with this wine, it's going to require extended patience if you wish to see it at its peak. |

It has a very pure bouquet and, especially for Drouhin, an intense bouquet of lanolin, walnut and pressed flower aromas that if anything becomes even more powerful with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with superb balance, almost symmetrical, and just the right amount of salinity. This is a vibrant, precise Montrachet with touches of sea salt and ginger toward the very persistent finish, which fans out with brio. Deeply impressive. |

Vinous (98)The 1999 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet was my pick of the three wines, a stunning expression of this vineyard. Limpid silver in hue with green tints, the wine offers a bouquet that is ineffably complex and bursts with energy. The mineralité is palpable, which is some achievement given the warmth of that growing season. Scents of hazelnut and black currant leaf appear with a couple of hours in the glass. The palate is intense and supremely well balanced, balancing tiptoe on an absolute killer line of acidity with hints of gunflint and bitter lemon toward the astonishingly persistent finish. This flirts with perfection. |

Wine Advocate (98)The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru is stunning, unfurling in the glass with youthfully reticent but already complex aromas of crisp green pear, mandarin, dried white flowers, honeycomb, toasted nuts and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with striking amplitude and volume, immense concentration and chewy structuring extract, its satiny attack segueing into a tense, focused mid-palate and finish. This is an austere, old-fashioned rendition of Ramonet's Montrachet that it is shaping up to be one of the three or four greatest white Burgundies of the vintage. |

There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied yet refined flavors that exude a more subtle bead of minerality on the beautifully textured, mouthcoating and hugely long finale that offers better depth as there is just more here. This is doubly impressive in that unlike most vintages of the iconic Ramonet Montrachet, this could actually be enjoyed after only a few years of bottling aging, such is the suppleness of the mid-palate. With that said, this will clearly be more interesting a decade hence. |

Vinous (98)The 1999 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Jean-Claude Ramonet was my pick of the three wines, a stunning expression of this vineyard. Limpid silver in hue with green tints, the wine offers a bouquet that is ineffably complex and bursts with energy. The mineralité is palpable, which is some achievement given the warmth of that growing season. Scents of hazelnut and black currant leaf appear with a couple of hours in the glass. The palate is intense and supremely well balanced, balancing tiptoe on an absolute killer line of acidity with hints of gunflint and bitter lemon toward the astonishingly persistent finish. This flirts with perfection. |

Wine Advocate (98)The 2016 Montrachet Grand Cru is stunning, unfurling in the glass with youthfully reticent but already complex aromas of crisp green pear, mandarin, dried white flowers, honeycomb, toasted nuts and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with striking amplitude and volume, immense concentration and chewy structuring extract, its satiny attack segueing into a tense, focused mid-palate and finish. This is an austere, old-fashioned rendition of Ramonet's Montrachet that it is shaping up to be one of the three or four greatest white Burgundies of the vintage. |

Burghound (97)Even with air the nose remains exceptionally restrained and even aggressive swirling barely reveals the highly spiced aromas of white peach, pear, just sliced fennel, jasmine tea and, like the Chevalier, a touch of mintiness along with the barest nuance of wood. There is fine though not massive density to the refined yet powerful and muscular larger-scaled flavors that possess almost painful intensity on the bone-dry, clean and taut finish that is seriously long because just as it seems to be dying away, it suddenly returns. In the category of a nit, there is noticeable warmth even if it's not really enough to impair the overall sense of balance. As one would expect from one of the most storied wines in all of Burgundy, this sports serious upside development potential which I would peg at between 12 and 15 years for the 2018 version of the Ramonet Montrachet. |

Burghound (97)Smoky and lightly oaky aromas include those of most floral, ripe apple compote, Asian-style tea and a broad range of spice nuances. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied yet refined flavors that exude a more subtle bead of minerality on the beautifully textured, mouthcoating and hugely long finale that offers better depth as there is just more here. This is doubly impressive in that unlike most vintages of the iconic Ramonet Montrachet, this could actually be enjoyed after only a few years of bottling aging, such is the suppleness of the mid-palate. With that said, this will clearly be more interesting a decade hence. |
