Vinous (95)

Eric and Charles Rousseau did no wrong in 1993. This 1993 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has blossomed in recent years. Showing some bricking on the rim, it has a captivating bouquet of raspberry, pomegranate, wet limestome and bay leaf, somehow effortless in style. The palate is taut and fresh with impressive focus, not the most powerful that I have encountered but as I commented before, there is a nonchalance about this wine that leaves you hooked. Tasted alongisde the Chambertin at a private dinner in London.

The 1993 Le Pavilion is the Hermitage of the Vintage. More austere than when I tasted it prior to bottling, it is one of the few 1993s with a sweet inner core of fruit, as well as a dense ruby/purple color, outstanding concentration and extract, and huge tannin in the finish. It is a harder style of Le Pavilion than the 1992, but it should turn out to be a 40- to 50-year wine. Last tasted 6/96.

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (91)

Good full ruby-red. Knockout, complex nose offers vibrant aromas of raspberry, sour red cherry, strawberry, licorice and violet, complicated by white pepper and rose. Then moderately dense and fresh in the mouth, with delicately spicy notes of redcurrant, strawberry, licorice, coffee and minerals. This rather elegantly styled wine finishes bright and fresh, with firm, highly polished tannins. This midweight Cheval Blanc lacks the density and concentration of the better vintages, but it has an amazingly pure nose of cabernet franc (I'd score this 95 or more for its aromas) that is a joy to inhale. For those with deep pockets, it's also a fantastic food wine, and a simply amazing buy, since it will cost much less than many other more sought-after Cheval Blanc vintages.

Vinous (94)

The 1993 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on September 27 at just 14.87hl/ha. It is certainly a bit funky at first with suggestions of TCA. Instinct tells me it just needs time to breathe and sure enough, after two hours it is quite a beautiful wine. It is blessed with an ethereal bouquet, beautifully defined yet reserved compared to other vintages. Scents of raspberry preserve, damp undergrowth (wet moss) with subtle hints of fresh tobacco and cedar all combined so effortlessly. The palate is extremely well balanced with sublime tannins, maybe a little foursquare yet precise on the finish. This is drinking so well now, but based on this bottle, do not be afraid to decant. A very capable Romanée-Conti, though I might have expected more given how this vintage has blossomed in recent years. 3,600 bottles produced. Tasted at the Romanée-Conti dinner at the Connaught Hotel.

An absolutely gorgeous wine, the 1993 Romanée St. Vivant is sinewy, nervous and beautifully persistent, with all of the aromatic intensity that makes wines from this site so compelling. Deceptively medium in body, the 1993 offers terrific depth and pure pedigree.

Vinous (93)

Good full medium red with an amber edge. Alluring, complex scents of black plum, black raspberry, graphite, violet, dried rose, licorice and musky underbrush, plus some subtle veggie notes of celery seed and beefsteak tomato. Rich, chewy, layered wine without any corners, offering a sexy subtle sweetness and leavening salty minerality to its flavors of dark fruits, flowers and spices complicated by game and underbrush. The wine's broad tannins dust the front teeth on the very long finish. À point right now; in fact, this turned a tad dry with aeration. This fruit was picked at the beginning of October, as in 1995 and 1999. (13.4% alcohol; 3.36 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity)

Vintage Tastings (96)

was a gorgeous example of 1993 but also actually rich in fruit, even more so than the bottle I had four days prior at CRU with Allen at a Roumier dinner (who's in charge of scheduling??? Oops, that's me). The nose was full of rich, red, vitaminy fruit; make that a symphony of red, purple and black fruits. Vibrant, fresh and long, its nose was incredible and had secondary earth aromas. The palate was so 1993 with its wave of t 'n a, cedar, leather and earth. It was still a baby, but what a baby, oh, baby...I better stop

Wine Advocate (89)

This brilliant estate, adjacent to La Conseillante, Petrus, and Vieux-Chateau-Certan, has turned in exemplary efforts in 1993-95. Dark ruby/purple-colored, with a sweet raspberry/black truffle/earthy nose, this low acid, fleshy L'Evangile does not reveal any of the vintage's green pepper, vegetal characteristics. Soft, surprisingly powerful, and well-focused for a 1993, it possesses a sense of elegance as well as sweet black fruits nicely presented in a medium-bodied, smooth, cedary-flavored format. This impressive 1993 can be drunk now as well as over the next 10-15 years.

The 1993 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru from d'Angerville is a vintage that I have not tasted previously – but what a wine! It has an entrancing bouquet of wilted-rose-petal-infused red fruit and hints of undergrowth that is utterly transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins. Classic Champans with a persistent, peppery finish. It gains vigor and manifests greater depth with every swirl of the glass. Magique!

Wine Advocate (90)

After less than persuasive performances in two potentially great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages, culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably profound 1995. The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.
