Vinous (90)

Good deep, youthful red-ruby color. Pungent, sauvage nose combines game, black pepper, black raspberry, black plum, leather, woodsmoke and fresh blood. Big, rich and full in the mouth, offers Cornas rusticity in all its glory. Fat and peppery. This seems richer but lower in acidity than earlier bottles I've tasted, and could use a bit more clarity of flavor. But very satisfying.

Vinous (94)

The 1991 Richebourg Grand Cru replicates the bottle that I tasted in 2015. Showing just slight ageing on the rim, it has a compelling, quite meaty bouquet with blackberry, briary and loamy notes, great depth and power, though maybe not quite as charming as the 1990. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, less tart than the previous bottle with a grippy, truffle and cedar-tinged finish that fans out wonderfully. This has got much more to give, though you could happily polish off a bottle now. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

Vinous (91)

The 1991 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru comes across powerful and ripe on the nose, displaying perhaps a little more volatility than I am accustomed to apropos of this hallowed domaine. It seems to be trying too hard to impress when there is no need, and here, I feel that Leroy has the upper hand in terms of complexity and terroir expression. The ripe, sensual palate features a core of pure black fruit; the tannic structure is not quite as fine as I would expect and lacks the panache and sophistication of the 1991 La Tâche. This does offer outstanding length, but not the high level of detail I anticipated. Tasted at the DRC/Leroy comparative dinner in Hong Kong.

Wine Advocate (86)

Lafite's light-bodied 1991 possesses moderate ruby color, a solid innercore of fruit, as well as potentially excessive tannin for its size and constitution. The wine exhibits Lafite's subtle personality with a leafy, tobacco, lead pencil nose intertwined with sweet aromas of cassis. Dry, austere, and lacking length, it should turn out to be a good representation of Lafite-Rothschild in this so-so year.

After a hot summer followed by rain at harvest, this "miracle" vintage produced many gorgeous northern Rhône Syrahs. Balanced, racy, elegant, fresh and sweet-tasting, with smooth tannins. Aromas of leather, roasted nuts, plum and wood smoke bring a complexity that seduces. Medium-bodied and in the lineage of '96.--La Chapelle vertical. Drink now through 2015. -PM

Wine Advocate (87)

In 1991, young Philippe Engel decided to utilize a higher percentage of new oak, extend his cold maceration prior to fermentation to 4-5 days, and put his wines in the bottle without filtration. The results are wines that rival his 1990s. The Echezeaux sweetness is a characteristic of the Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echezeaux. The 1991 Clos de Vougeot reveals a ripe cassis component, as well as a chunky, rich, fleshy texture. The tannins do not dominate either the Clos de Vougeot or Grands Echezeaux. Rather, the wines are characterized by their perfumed personalities, expansive, rich, supple flavors, and velvety textures. Both are exceptionally well made 1991s. The Grands Echezeaux displays more dimension to its bouquet and flavors. Both wines should drink well for a decade. A Peter Vezan Selection, various importers, including Arborway Imports, Lexington, MA, The Stacole Co., Boca Raton, FL, and The Wine Company, Minneapolis, MN
