2017 |
A. A. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2017 (6x75cl) Decanter (95)An utterly delicious Cinsault from Swartland pioneer and champion of the Cinsault revival in South Africa, Andre Adrian (Adi) Badenhorst. The Ramnasgras comes from a small vineyard on the estate, planted in the mid 50’s, and is the product of meticulous hand selection, fermentation in ‘dodgy old wooden vats’ and maturation in ‘less dodgy foudre for 12 months’. Such is Adi’s way, the wine is made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and is a true reflection of the vintage conditions and Swartland terroir. This is full of red berries and perfumed floral notes with a mineral edge. A small production of 3,500 bottles, so worth seeking out and stocking-up if you can.

2016 |
A. A. Badenhorst Red Blend 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

Allt-a-Bhainne (Stiùbhart Single Cask) Speyside Single Malt 24YO 1997 (1x70cl)

|
1997 |
Allt-a-Bhainne (Stiùbhart Single Cask) Speyside Single Malt 24YO 1997 (1x70cl) From a deeply underrated distillery, this Allt-a-Bhainne bottled by the Stewart Whisky Company under their Stiùbhart Single Cask label is a glorious example of what happens when a cask is simply allowed to mature as it should. A natural cask strength of just 44.9% after 24 years makes it clear that this was maturing at an accelerated rate, losing a lot of alcohol and water but the phenolic oils that remain have led to an extremely concentrated whisky; a masterclass in bourbon-wood maturation.
Appearance: Showing a brilliant old-brass colour courtesy of the bourbon wood and that unique concentration through the ageing process.
Nose: this whisky jumps out of the glass with notes almost reminiscent of a great White Burgundy. Crushed river stones and struck flint alongside golden delicious apple and herbes de provence come across on the nose.
Palate: The palate is gentle as one would expect from the lower ABV but it is oily and viscous with a sensation of scented candle followed by sea salt, delicate earthy peat and a return of that golden delicious apple note.
Finish: Extremely long and gentle with the initial notes of crushed stones mingling with sea salt and stewed orchard fruit.

Anwilka 2013 (6x75cl)

|
2013 |
Anwilka 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (92+)(aged for 15 months in 40% new 400-liter French oak barrels): Bright, full ruby. Dark fruit notes of cassis and blackberry are complicated by violet, woodsmoke and peppery herbs on the nose. At once bright and deep, showing a bit more woodsmoky oak than the 2014 Petit Frère but also much more supporting mid-palate dark berry intensity and density of material, not to mention a sweeter finish. Lovely harmonious acidity and serious tongue- and toothdusting tannins give this rather primary wine the energy and structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. Bruno Prats, ex-owner of Château Cos d'Estournel, and Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, owner of Château Angélus, still consult here and this in fact is in a very Bordeaux style. I would not be surprised if this dense but lively wine merited an even higher score in the future.

Anwilka 2015 (6x75cl) James Suckling (95)This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate's full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot. Best in 2020.

2017 |
Anwilka 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2017 Anwilka was aged for 19 months in 50% new oak (400-liter barrels) and the rest in second-fill. It has a pure, seductive bouquet of boysenberry and cassis fruit, the vanilla-y oak seamlessly integrated and not imposing itself like older vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, and slightly granular in texture, presenting layered black fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and touches of cassis. Very seductive on the finish. This is an almost Napa-like Anwilka that requires 3–4 years in barrel.

Blair Athol (Stiùbhart Single Cask) Highland Single Malt Cask #309719B 2008 (1x70cl)

2008 |
Blair Athol (Stiùbhart Single Cask) Highland Single Malt Cask #309719B 2008 (1x70cl) This twelve-year-old Highland Single Malt was distilled in 2008 at the Blair Athol Distillery along the banks of the River Tummel. Drawn from a single, undersized 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel previously used by the Koval Distillery, it is a youthful pale golden colour with bright aromatics of red apple and pear as well as fine vanilla and warm baking spices. A generous, well-balanced highlander from one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland dating back to 1798, this is a personal favourite and a fitting first bottling of the Stiùbhart Single Cask Selection. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 58.9% without chill filtration or added colouring. This is the first bottling to be released by the Stewart Whisky Company.

Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Franschhoek, matured for 22 months in 80% new French barriques, has a fresh, marine-influenced bouquet that I feel has a little more complexity than the Stellenbosch. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lightly spiced with black pepper and bay leaf, and very focused, leading to a bright and quite structured finish. This has more class and nuance than its Stellenbosch counterpart.

Three per cent Muscat adds a touch of orange marmalade to the leesy, flinty, lanolin and struck match palate. Less oaky than in the past and all the better for it. Long and complex.

Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl) Matthew Jukes (18.5+)Plush and packed with cassis, this is a tremendously flashy wine with deep wells of liqueur-like fruit coupled with strident oak and a lovely bright, dry finish. Yearning to be set free, BCSS is like a prize-fighter itching for the bell so it can launch itself at its opponent. This is an amazing Cabernet and while it has the stuffing to go deep into the later rounds, I love its toned flanks and glistening musculature right now.

2018 |
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2018 (6x75cl) Matthew Jukes (19+)I have never forgotten the 2000 vintage of this wine, which I wrote up in one of my books many moons ago. In the blink of an eye, the perfume on this 2018 vintage took me back to that great wine and while this label has been known to wander off into the forest in certain vintages, it is back with a brooding bang and loaded with Hermitage-like malevolence in 2018. With a melange of both red and black fruit tones and considerable aromatic lift on the nose, this is a Syrah with its feet firmly planted in the earth while its head is in the clouds such is the scale and majesty of its posture. Like the other reds in this vintage, the oak integration is near perfect and this allows the fruit to sing. If there is one wine to drink before the other reds, then this is it, and while it might be a criminal offence to drink this wine so young, I am sure you will break the law for a flavour as enthralling and all-encompassing as this one.

2019 |
Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2019 (6x75cl) The benchmark cuvée from the exceptionally talented Reenen Borman, at the helm of this mythical estate since 2010 - this wine is spoken about in hushed tones amongst experts, critics.
50% whole-bunch fermentation has given the wine monolithic structure, without a single brick out of place. 25% of the wine was raised in 400 litre oak barrels, imparting gentle seasoning and further fine tannins, whilst the remaining 75% was raised in concrete eggs, preserving the fruit's sensational freshness and impossible purity.
Naturally, this wine is infantile due to its quality and structure, but already it displays a mesmeric mélange of violets, dried flowers, herbs and spices on the nose. Positively quivering with energy at this stage, the wine’s acidity shoots like Artemis’ arrow across the palate, losing no momentum through the endless finish. It is hard to overstate the juddering quality of Epilogue – Tim Atkin MW said of the 2017 that it was “now established as one of the Cape’s great Syrahs”... It is now one of the world’s greatest wines.

1988 |
Bowmore Islay Single Malt Vintage Edition 1988 Bottled 2017 (1x70cl) An extremely rare vintage release from the iconic Bowmore distillery, this vintage Islay is remarkable in its rarity, its exclusivity and its quality. This discontinued beauty is a unique expression of Bowmore's house style. Known for a more moderate peat profile, especially when compared to the likes of Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig, often tempered by a fair amount of sherry influence, however this Bowmore is matured solely in Bourbon barrels allowing its peat character to come through with a more classical Islay smokiness, alongside some surprising floral notes of rosewater, orange blossom and a satisfying maritime profile. Breaky Bottom Gerard Hoffnug Brut Vintage 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2009 Cuvée Gerald Hoffnung Brut is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It has a delightful, winsome bouquet of white flowers, brioche and Braeburn apple aromas that are very well defined. The palate is sharp on the entry, with orange peel and lemon zest flavors, and quite taut and focused, although I am seeking just a little more vigor toward the leesy finish. Still, overall this is a fine English sparkling wine that is developing a lovely creamy mouthfeel.
