Wagner-Stempel Siefersheimer Heerkretz Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94)

White peach, apple and lime are accented by their pits and seeds as well as by raw hazelnut on a soaring nose that anticipates the infectious juiciness, glowing piquancy and bittersweet depth of the silken palate. As usual, there is sheer refreshment here, as well as transparency to mineral and herbal elements of which the corresponding Höllberg – impressive though it is in its overtly dense, more opaque way – can only dream. The finishing interaction of myriad fruit and mineral elements is almost kaleidoscopic and reveals a strikingly tactile dimension to its vibrant impingements of chalk, pepper and peach kernel.

Vinous (93)

The 2015 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Avizoise Grand Cru stands out in this range for its breadth and power. Lemon peel, savory herbs, dried flowers, grapefruit and mint lend a bit of upper register and aromatic presence. Slight vegetal notes, a characteristic of any 2015s, lurk beneath, while texturally the Avizoise is on the lighter side. For those reasons, I would not push my luck on aging. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2021.

Agrapart Les 7 Crus Brut NV (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

Based half-each on vintages 2010 and 2009, and with 10% Pinot Noir “smuggled in,” Agrapart’s NV Brut Blanc De Blancs 7 Crus – named for the seven Cote des Blancs villages from which it is sourced, and in this instance disgorged in May, 2013 – displays uncommon delicacy, buoyancy, tension and nuance for an “intro-level” cuvee, and that uncannily combined with a sense of richness and purity to its white peach and grapefruit. Almond and pistachio cream lend allure; chalk and salt along with piquancy of peach kernel and toasted pumpkin seed impart interest, invigoration and saliva-inducement to an effusively juicy, succulent and refreshingly sustained finish. Seven grams of residual sugar, incidentally, is fairly high by estate standards but perfectly complements this wine’s forward fruit without engendering any sense of outright sweetness. This exceptional value in Champagne should remain irresistible for at least the next couple of years, and I shall be anxious to experience what happens further down the pike as I revisit the bottles I recently purchased (because older “intro-level” bottles are not usually something that growers – or, for that matter, most self-styled wine collectors – can lay their hands on to pour for you).

Agrapart Mineral Extra Brut Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94)

The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral is a powerful, intense Champagne that captures all of the natural power of these old vines in Avize and Cramant. Aptly named, the Minéral is infused with tremendous mineral and soil inflections that give a real feeling of gravitas. Crushed rocks, slate, chalk and citrus accents are some of the many nuances that emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This release is fabulous. It is also a reticent wine, though, so at least a year or two in bottle will help soften. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Aile d'Argent 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

There was no malolactic fermentation and no Muscadelle this year—both unusual for Aile d’Argent. Composed of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon (harvested August 30 to September 5), the 2018 Aile d'Argent has 13% alcohol and is a little reticent to begin, offering fragrant notions of lemongrass, freshly chopped ginger and lemon tart with a core of fresh pineapples, white peaches and aniseed. The palate is rich, sultry and exotic with loads of spices and tropical fruit and an electric backbone of acid, finishing very long.

Albarello Quinta Muradella 2007 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2007 Albarello (100% Albarello aka Brancellao) is produced from a grape that is nearly extinct, wiped out beginning in the 1850s from Oidium and subsequently by phylloxera. These vines are 9 years old and only 33 cases were produced. It presents a unique aromatic array (it was always regarded as an intensely aromatic variety) with a roasted, plum compote character. Sweetly-fruited and seamless on the palate, this is a concentrated, elegant offering with no hard edges. It is drinking splendidly now but should easily last for 6-8 years. Master Sommeliers, take notice!

Vinous (92)

The 2019 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a crisp, focused bouquet, still quite backward, featuring citrus lemon, lime zest, crushed rock and a very light smoky note. The palate is more impressive, displaying fine concentration. This Les Clos is slightly waxy in texture with a brisk, quite spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.

Fuller cloudy medium yellow. Reticent nose hints at lemon, orange and anise, with an element of minerality providing lift. The broadest and richest of these young 2016s but not yet filled in, with yellow fruit and citrus zest flavors complicated by a sexy element of spicy oak. The tangy finish features a touch of youthful bitterness but spreads out nicely on the back end. This more serious grand cru will need time.

Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2015 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94)

The 2015 Cartology is developing a succinct, quite gorgeous bouquet with jasmine, sea spray and a hint of linseed. There is real complexity within this Cartology, very focused and taut. The palate is vivid and bright, conveying real energy and poise with wonderful salinity towards the finish, touches of hazelnut and Chinese 5-spice on the aftertaste. This is a scintillating, quite cerebral Cartology that is going to give a lot of pleasure. Tasted at the Alheit seminar with Chris Alheit in London.

Vinous (93)

The 2018 Cartology, a blend of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Sémillon this year, is whole-cluster-pressed with no SO2 addition, and matured in used oak. It has a well defined, pure bouquet of dried honey, yellow flower, honeysuckle and lanolin aromas that instantly seduce the senses. The palate is beautifully balanced with a slightly oily-textured opening, the intensity deftly counterbalanced by the fine bead of acidity, and a discreet spiciness toward the finish. This is very harmonious and persistent, an effortless Cartology that should age with style. Superb.

Vinous (90)

From vines planted in 2010, the 2017 Hemelrand Vine Garden was matured in old neutral barrels and cement egg. It has a clean, pure bouquet of lemon curd, albumen and light yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced, with a taut line of acidity, and quite saline in the mouth. The sharp, slightly flinty finish oddly reminds me of a mature Chablis. Very fine.

Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93)

The 2018 Hemelrand Vine Garden is whole-cluster-pressed and matured in oak and foudres. It has a very seductive bouquet of honeysuckle, passion fruit and hints of beeswax that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a saline opening, plus a fine bead of acidity. There is a light saline lick toward the finish that becomes nuttier with aeration, although this does not quite deliver the complexity of Alheit’s best Chenin Blancs. Still, it is a lovely white blend that should age with style.

Dried apricots and peaches emerge from an air of white smoke and incense as the 2020 Bramìto della Sala opens up in the glass. Hints of grapefruit and green botanicals linger throughout the long, spicy. mouthwatering finale. The 2019 represents excellent value in the category of entry-level Italian Chardonnay.

The 2018 Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard has tremendous energy and singular expression this vintage. The nose is a kaleidoscope of quince, coriander seed, honeysuckle and pastry, continually changing as it spends time in the glass. Baettig Seleccion de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Baettig selected the El Triángulo and Llaima Largo plots to produce the 2019 Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay because they deliver more vertical, mineral and tense wine to achieve finesse and complexity. The first experimental vinification was 2016, and 2019 was a year with a cold spring and a warm summer that resulted in wines that combine power, freshness and intensity, with more alcohol (13.5%), acidity (9.8 grams in tartaric!!) and freshness (pH 3.08) than previous years. The whole clusters were pressed, and the juice was put in French barrels to ferment with indigenous yeasts. It matured for 16 months in 400-liter oak barrels, 38% of them new. This is super austere, shy and closed, with subtle complexity, not very varietal, more about the soils and the cooler place. 2019 was not a large crop, and the wines have good concentration, a good year in the south. It has good depth, pungent flavors and some nutty, wax and acacia notes, not exuberant or explosive, but elegant and with density and more weight than the 2018, which gives it more depth and layers. This is superb, very complete. 2,900 bottles were filled in September 2020.

While the old-vine Roussanne cuvée from this estate gets all the attention from collectors, don’t make the mistake of discounting their classic Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. The 2019 reveals a lighter gold hue as well as a beautiful and classic bouquet of honeyed citrus, quince, white flowers, bee’s wax, and a touch of flinty minerality. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has flawless balance, nicely integrated acidity, and a great, minerally finish.

Very fine.

Vinous (91-93)

Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2018 (6x75cl)

Superb.

Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2017 (6x75cl)

Very fine.

It’s soft and appealing through its stimulating mix of mineral-tinged orchard fruits and complementary nuances of sour citrus. Hints of grapefruit and green botanicals linger throughout the long, spicy. mouthwatering finale. The 2019 represents excellent value in the category of entry-level Italian Chardonnay.

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2018 Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard has tremendous energy and singular expression this vintage. The nose is a kaleidoscope of quince, coriander seed, honeysuckle and pastry, continually changing as it spends time in the glass. The palate balances bursts of juicy preserved citrus character with deeper tones of graphite and almond, its flavors continuing to shift and evolve, and it finishes with exceptional energy and length. Wow!

The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is all Roussanne and comes from a three-hectare parcel of vines planted in 1901. It offers a heavenly bouquet of white currants, white flowers, honeysuckle, and toasted bread that opens up beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, it stays perfectly balanced on the palate and has that rare sense of richness paired with freshness that’s the hallmark of truly great wines.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95)

While the old-vine Roussanne cuvée from this estate gets all the attention from collectors, don’t make the mistake of discounting their classic Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. The 2019 reveals a lighter gold hue as well as a beautiful and classic bouquet of honeyed citrus, quince, white flowers, bee’s wax, and a touch of flinty minerality. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has flawless balance, nicely integrated acidity, and a great, minerally finish. You can enjoy bottles today with a decant or cellar for two to three decades, if you’re so inclined.
