Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2014 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (98)

It hardly needs be said this is a great Graveyard, shortlisted for Wine of the Year. It is full-bodied, with intense intersections and trails of black fruits, earth, leather, spice, oak and ripe tannins running in all directions. It takes time in the glass for assertive cedar wood oak to settle into the fruit but at all steps along the way this wine oozes both quality and class. You're in the most skilled of hands here. Woodsmoke, assorted cherries, twiggy spice notes, flavour-infused acidity and fine-grained tannin. It's a truly beautiful wine.

Medium to deep red colour with a good tint of purple. The bouquet is earthy and faintly peppery with a savoury note from wood-ageing, the brown-spice notes adding to the impression of sapidity. Superfine, silky-soft tannins, seamless texture, tidy berries and spices to close. Refreshing acidity in balance. An exceptional, northern Rhône-style shiraz that is already drinking beautifully. At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

81% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 3% malbec. Wild-fermented and matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). The colour is faultless, as is the wine. It has waves of complexity, like one of Margaret River's surf breaks, changing shape as the luxuriant cassis swells on the mid-palate, then finishes with ripe, textured tannins as the wave goes on to crash on the shore. The overall ripeness is perfection.

Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (99)

This is a superb edition of this revered, cabernet-based blend with such complete, seamless and elegant feel, yet there’s such depth of flavor, too. Aromas of fresh redcurrants, red and violet flowers, subtle spice, fresh earth, paper bark, fresh-picked thyme and sage, red berries and some cedary notes. The palate is stunning and has a brand of elegance with power that is found in only the greatest wines. Pristine mulberries, red plums, blueberries and red cherries sail through layers of fine tannin, into an unwaveringly long and vibrant finish. An exceptionally concentrated and convincing Diana Madeline release, this is one of their finest. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 5% malbec. Delicious now, but his will bloom from 2028. Screw cap.

The Real Review (98)

Medium to light-straw colour. The bouquet is mineral, savoury, with a high-note of wheat biscuit, the palate very intense and yet understated, with a very savoury dryness in its lingering aftertaste. There are traces of malt, almond meal and lemon in the mouth. The palate has outstanding tension, refinement and length. It`s still reserved and latent, yet to spread its wings, but the intensity is there. It reveals more wonderful complexities the more you taste it and promises to unfold even more with time.

Dandelion Vineyards Lion’s Roar of the Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (12x75cl)

James Halliday (95)

While we seldom associate Barossa with that most stiff upper lipped grape, cabernet, there are many good examples. This is among them. Embellished with the varietal tattoo of dried sage, clove and a whiff of leaf, there is something more nourishing, denser and altogether richer from these parts: black olive, bitter chocolate and cherry bonbon. But what I really love are the tannins: moreish, cocoa-laced and fine grained.

The price of this wine reflects the piercing brilliance of the bouquet and, in particular, the palate. There is some residual sugar, but the acidity totally obscures it. If you buy it, keep some bottles for a minimum of 10 years, allowing the treasure trove of secondary flavours to be liberated.

James Halliday (98)

A Tasmanian pinot that has been supremely stylish since first tasted in Jan '18, and is now even better. The richness of the fruit of youth remains in the background; there's a spicy complexity of the mouthfilling flavours. Oak and tannins play their part on the long palate, adding to its longevity.

It's so difficult to avoid comparisons with Montrachet, except to say both have profoundly deep and long palates. Of course, there's high-quality French oak and the requisite acidity to freshen the finish, but the ultimate quality lies in the freakish length of the wine.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Amon Ra has youthfully toned-down notes of blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, plums and cracked pepper with nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and black earth. The palate has wonderful balance and elegance for its commendable concentration and fullness, with tons of muscular fruit and spice layers framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great persistence.

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Dramatic, intense and powerful, the 2016 Amon Ra Shiraz recalls the 2004 in its youth, crammed with layers of fruit, complex, savory elements and rich, velvety tannins. It's full-bodied, characterized by notes of grilled meat, espresso, black olive, cassis, vanilla, baking spices and an undercurrent of loamy earth. Yes, it's unapologetically big and bold, the product of a warm, sunny climate and ripe grapes, but it does show a sense of decorum, restraint and elegance on the long finish.

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

Certainly one of the best vintages of young Amon Ra I've ever tasted, the 2018 Amon Ra Shiraz is a stupendous effort. From old vines in the Ebenezer section of the northern Barossa, it starts off with a whirlwind of mocha, blackberry and dried spices, then actually gets more red-fruited as it sits in the glass. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated without being jammy or overdone, the wine finishes long and savory, framed by dusty tannins and mouthwatering black olives. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer compares 2018 to 2004 (which continues to drink well). Expect the 2018 to drink well young, but easily age through 2035, perhaps longer.

Glaetzer Anaperenna 2017 (6x75cl) Dominated by over 80% Shiraz from the Ebeneezer district of the Barossa Valley, the splash of 18% Cabernet Sauvignon more than fights its corner, adding a graceful aromatic profile of mint, eucalyptus, cocoa powder and refined structure.

As a result, this "quintessential Australian blend" is velvety and rich but never cloying. Fine and balanced but never lacking in power. Simply put, it is a masterpiece from the 'Baron of the Barossa' and we strongly recommend you add a case (or two) to your collection.

Wine Advocate (97)

For the 2018 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Glaetzer blended in 18% Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine increased fragrance and length. The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar- and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture.

The clean, fresh aromas of just-picked citrus fruits belie the enormous power of lime juice and rich lemon pith that immediately fills the front palate on this latest vintage. There’s poise in addition to the power though, with multiple layers of rounded citrus and mineral flavours enjoying a luxurious textural roll through the mid-palate. Perfect integration of fresh citric acid carries the pure fruit qualities through extraordinary length to a crisp, lip-smacking finish.

Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2017 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (98)

Screw cap.

The Western Australian (98)

One of the most powerful and extraordinarily intense of this illustrious line. Power of lemon zest, stone fruit and lime. The palate is a powerhouse with a deep and concentrated middle extending urgently to a very long finish. Complex and layered with structure that will handle extended cellaring. One of the very best.

D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2015 (6x75cl)

This is a particularly good Dead Arm, its alcohol miraculously the same as the '14, but however that may be, it has an elegance to its mouthfeel and lingering finish.

Dandelion Wonderland Riesling 2019 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (97)

The price of this wine reflects the piercing brilliance of the bouquet and, in particular, the palate. There is some residual sugar, but the acidity totally obscures it. If you buy it, keep some bottles for a minimum of 10 years, allowing the treasure trove of secondary flavours to be liberated.

Dawson James Tasmania Pinot Noir 2016 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (98)

A Tasmanian pinot that has been supremely stylish since first tasted in Jan '18, and is now even better. The richness of the fruit of youth remains in the background; there's a spicy complexity of the mouthfilling flavours. Oak and tannins play their part on the long palate, adding to its longevity.

Halliday Wine Companion (99)

It's so difficult to avoid comparisons with Montrachet, except to say both have profoundly deep and long palates. Of course, there's high-quality French oak and the requisite acidity to freshen the finish, but the ultimate quality lies in the freakish length of the wine.

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Glaetzer Anaperenna 2017 (6x75cl)

2017

Glaetzer Anaperenna 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

For the 2018 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Glaetzer blended in 18% Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine increased fragrance and length. The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar- and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture.

Lovely floral and lime fragrances greet the nose, while the palate is intense and almost juicy, fruit-rich and long. There are nettley dried herb notes too. Concentration with finesse and tautness. The finish is very dry, appetising and not austere. A really stylish Riesling.

Decanter (98)

The clean, fresh aromas of just-picked citrus fruits belie the enormous power of lime juice and rich lemon pith that immediately fills the front palate on this latest vintage. There’s poise in addition to the power though, with multiple layers of rounded citrus and mineral flavours enjoying a luxurious textural roll through the mid-palate. Perfect integration of fresh citric acid carries the pure fruit qualities through extraordinary length to a crisp, lip-smacking finish.

Grown on a vineyard planted in '71. This is a superb cabernet. Dusty, dry and herbal but awash with sweet, boysenberried, blackcurrant-drenched fruit. It lays down oodles of flavour, not to mention tannin, but it's fragrant and frisky at the same time. One sip and you can't let go; it has you in its thrall.
