2017 |
A. A. Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2017 (6x75cl) Decanter (95)An utterly delicious Cinsault from Swartland pioneer and champion of the Cinsault revival in South Africa, Andre Adrian (Adi) Badenhorst. The Ramnasgras comes from a small vineyard on the estate, planted in the mid 50’s, and is the product of meticulous hand selection, fermentation in ‘dodgy old wooden vats’ and maturation in ‘less dodgy foudre for 12 months’. Such is Adi’s way, the wine is made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and is a true reflection of the vintage conditions and Swartland terroir. This is full of red berries and perfumed floral notes with a mineral edge. A small production of 3,500 bottles, so worth seeking out and stocking-up if you can.

2016 |
A. A. Badenhorst Red Blend 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

2015 |
Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2015 Cartology is developing a succinct, quite gorgeous bouquet with jasmine, sea spray and a hint of linseed. There is real complexity within this Cartology, very focused and taut. The palate is vivid and bright, conveying real energy and poise with wonderful salinity towards the finish, touches of hazelnut and Chinese 5-spice on the aftertaste. This is a scintillating, quite cerebral Cartology that is going to give a lot of pleasure. Tasted at the Alheit seminar with Chris Alheit in London.

2018 |
Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bush Vines 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Cartology, a blend of 90% Chenin Blanc and 10% Sémillon this year, is whole-cluster-pressed with no SO2 addition, and matured in used oak. It has a well defined, pure bouquet of dried honey, yellow flower, honeysuckle and lanolin aromas that instantly seduce the senses. The palate is beautifully balanced with a slightly oily-textured opening, the intensity deftly counterbalanced by the fine bead of acidity, and a discreet spiciness toward the finish. This is very harmonious and persistent, an effortless Cartology that should age with style. Superb.

Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)From vines planted in 2010, the 2017 Hemelrand Vine Garden was matured in old neutral barrels and cement egg. It has a clean, pure bouquet of lemon curd, albumen and light yellow flowers. The palate is well balanced, with a taut line of acidity, and quite saline in the mouth. The sharp, slightly flinty finish oddly reminds me of a mature Chablis. Very fine.

Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Hemelrand Vine Garden is whole-cluster-pressed and matured in oak and foudres. It has a very seductive bouquet of honeysuckle, passion fruit and hints of beeswax that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a saline opening, plus a fine bead of acidity. There is a light saline lick toward the finish that becomes nuttier with aeration, although this does not quite deliver the complexity of Alheit’s best Chenin Blancs. Still, it is a lovely white blend that should age with style.

Anwilka 2013 (6x75cl)

|
2013 |
Anwilka 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (92+)(aged for 15 months in 40% new 400-liter French oak barrels): Bright, full ruby. Dark fruit notes of cassis and blackberry are complicated by violet, woodsmoke and peppery herbs on the nose. At once bright and deep, showing a bit more woodsmoky oak than the 2014 Petit Frère but also much more supporting mid-palate dark berry intensity and density of material, not to mention a sweeter finish. Lovely harmonious acidity and serious tongue- and toothdusting tannins give this rather primary wine the energy and structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. Bruno Prats, ex-owner of Château Cos d'Estournel, and Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, owner of Château Angélus, still consult here and this in fact is in a very Bordeaux style. I would not be surprised if this dense but lively wine merited an even higher score in the future.

Anwilka 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2017 Anwilka was aged for 19 months in 50% new oak (400-liter barrels) and the rest in second-fill. It has a pure, seductive bouquet of boysenberry and cassis fruit, the vanilla-y oak seamlessly integrated and not imposing itself like older vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, and slightly granular in texture, presenting layered black fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and touches of cassis. Very seductive on the finish. This is an almost Napa-like Anwilka that requires 3–4 years in barrel.

Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Franschhoek, matured for 22 months in 80% new French barriques, has a fresh, marine-influenced bouquet that I feel has a little more complexity than the Stellenbosch. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lightly spiced with black pepper and bay leaf, and very focused, leading to a bright and quite structured finish. This has more class and nuance than its Stellenbosch counterpart.

Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl) Matthew Jukes (18.5+)Plush and packed with cassis, this is a tremendously flashy wine with deep wells of liqueur-like fruit coupled with strident oak and a lovely bright, dry finish. Yearning to be set free, BCSS is like a prize-fighter itching for the bell so it can launch itself at its opponent. This is an amazing Cabernet and while it has the stuffing to go deep into the later rounds, I love its toned flanks and glistening musculature right now.

2018 |
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2018 (6x75cl) Matthew Jukes (19+)I have never forgotten the 2000 vintage of this wine, which I wrote up in one of my books many moons ago. In the blink of an eye, the perfume on this 2018 vintage took me back to that great wine and while this label has been known to wander off into the forest in certain vintages, it is back with a brooding bang and loaded with Hermitage-like malevolence in 2018. With a melange of both red and black fruit tones and considerable aromatic lift on the nose, this is a Syrah with its feet firmly planted in the earth while its head is in the clouds such is the scale and majesty of its posture. Like the other reds in this vintage, the oak integration is near perfect and this allows the fruit to sing. If there is one wine to drink before the other reds, then this is it, and while it might be a criminal offence to drink this wine so young, I am sure you will break the law for a flavour as enthralling and all-encompassing as this one.

2019 |
Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2019 (6x75cl) The benchmark cuvée from the exceptionally talented Reenen Borman, at the helm of this mythical estate since 2010 - this wine is spoken about in hushed tones amongst experts, critics.
50% whole-bunch fermentation has given the wine monolithic structure, without a single brick out of place. 25% of the wine was raised in 400 litre oak barrels, imparting gentle seasoning and further fine tannins, whilst the remaining 75% was raised in concrete eggs, preserving the fruit's sensational freshness and impossible purity.
Naturally, this wine is infantile due to its quality and structure, but already it displays a mesmeric mélange of violets, dried flowers, herbs and spices on the nose. Positively quivering with energy at this stage, the wine’s acidity shoots like Artemis’ arrow across the palate, losing no momentum through the endless finish. It is hard to overstate the juddering quality of Epilogue – Tim Atkin MW said of the 2017 that it was “now established as one of the Cape’s great Syrahs”... It is now one of the world’s greatest wines.

2014 |
Botanica Chenin Blanc Mary Delany Collection 2014 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)Light yellow. Deep, sexy scents of lemon drop, peach, white plum, honeysuckle and earth, complicated by a nutty leesy quality. Fat and deceptively sweet on entry, then citrus peel and mineral flavors give definition and energy to the middle palate and grip to the finish. The initial sensation of plushness disappeared in an instant but then returned with aeration. This is ultimately a firm, well-delineated, mineral-driven Chenin with spine and some aging potential. In fact, I'd give it another year to knit--and to lose its nagging slight hardness.

Daniel Vollenweider Krover Steffensberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2019 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2019 Kröver Steffensberg Riesling Auslese (Gold Capsule) is clear, piquant and spicy on the coolish, earthy and darker-toned nose compared to both Goldgrube Auslesen. Cumquat and orange notes emerge after a while in the glass, indicating a certain percentage of perfect botrytis. The palate is round and intense yet weightless and very elegant, with a crystalline, beautifully seamless texture and salty-piquant and nervy mineral acidity. In fact, this is a great synthesis between the two sweet Goldgrube selections since it paints the finesse of the regular Wolfgrube with the intensity and richness of the gold-capsuled Auslese. 8.5% alcohol. David & Nadia Aristargos 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2018 Aristargos is a blend of 53% Chenin Blanc, 13% Clairette, 13% Sémillon with some skin contact, 10% Roussanne, 2% Marsanne and 9% Viognier, from a mixture of old and younger vines from across 14 vineyards, matured in neutral oak for 11 months. It has a complex bouquet of nectarine, desiccated orange peel, grilled hazelnuts and a touch of almond. The palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity and quite neutral in style, offering subtle, fleeting glimpses of orange zest and a tang of sea salt, though I would like just a little more weight on the finish.
