Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca'Mia. As always, the Ca'Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year.

The 2011 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is sweet, floral and wonderfully expressive, all Brovia signatures. Silky tannins provide the backdrop as this sensual, polished Barolo shows off its class. Perfumed notes are woven throughout, but it is the wine's exceptional textural finesse that stands out most. Hints of hard candy, mint, cinnamon and succulent red cherries add the final shades of dimension. In 2011, the Rocche stands out for its total sense of class.

The 2011 Barolo Villero exhibits a full body and thick concentration. Ultimately, this is one of my favorite wines from Brovia in this vintage. I love the muscle and heft that the wine shows, and the fact it delivers that power with the utmost elegance. Nothing is heavy or overdone here. You really get a sense of the quality of fruit achieved in the Villero vineyard. The wine shows integrated tannins and impeccable dark fruit balance.

The 2011 Sammarco is so youthful it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Dark, rich and inviting, the 2011 possesses notable concentration and depth, with round yet powerful tannins and a surprising level of freshness for the year. A host of black cherry, graphite, smoke, plum and lavender notes accompany the powerful finish. It will be quite some time before the 2011 is ready to drink, but there is plenty to look forward to.

A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo has nevertheless preserved good freshness for the year. The breadth and amplitude of the vintage comes through, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Readers can look forward to another 20 years of fine drinking. This is very nicely done.

Beautiful deep ruby with incredible richness in aroma--blackberry, blueberry and plum--tempered by sweet spice from the oak. The 2011 Barolo Gramolere, Alessandria's one Barolo from Monforte, is a great example of this site. Sweet, balsamic-inflected aromas open up first, followed by sinewy, energetic tannins that give the wine its sense of energy. Here the flavors are darker than in Alessandria's Verduno Barolos, while the tannin and acid profile are very typical of Monforte. This is another 2011 from Alessandria that screams of terroir, something that isn't always found 2011. In a word: brilliant!

Glorious aromas of roses, whole white truffles, earth and raspberry. Dusty. Subtle rosemary and lemon grass too. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Yet it opens and caresses every inch of your palate. So gorgeous now to drink. No Monfortino in this year; so absolutely amazing because it all went in here. Wow. Drink or hold.

Wow. Fabulous aromas of currants, rosemary, mint and orange peel. Perfect nose. Full body with perfectly integrated tannins. It's long and incredible with tangerine, toasted-oak, berry, terracotta and chocolate flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. This needs at least five years to soften but so spellbinding now.

Cultivated with immense proficiency, the Paolo Bea Sagrantino Montefalco Secco Pagliaro 2011 is an exquisite masterpiece from one of the most highly regarded wineries in Montefalco, Umbria. Assembled from 100% Sagrantino grapes, this exquisite vintage shines with a brilliant ruby hue, underpinned by aromas of wild cherries, plums, and a hint of spice.

The 2011 Barolo Ginestra Riserva is every bit as special as the handsome wooden cases in which this collection is sold, along with a newly redesigned label. It's a gorgeous vintage, very full and generous, whose warmer temperatures are reflected in lots of dark, black, rich and ripe penetrating fruit. The Riserva's texture really emerges as unique because it is woven tightly and dense, yet there is ample softness and richness here. It is another Piedmont gem for your cellar.

The 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo is a proud and exuberant wine that does enormous justice to the vintage and to the mighty Nebbiolo grape. This is remembered as a warm growing season, and this wine is richly layered, generous and beautifully intense as a result. Dark cherry aromas are folded within spice, cured tobacco and leather. The best part is that subtle crunch or snap you get on the palate, thanks to the fresh acidity that is neatly integrated within.

The 2011 Boggina sees fruit sourced from the same single-vineyard, only this expression sees 12 days of maceration and 14 moths of barrel aging (both tonneaux and botte). This is a radically different wine that shows precision and dark focus. The BogginAnfora feels fuzzy and foggy in comparison with a broader aromatic presentation, although both wines offer considerable charm. Here, the aromas are delivered straight to your senses with power and determination. The mouthfeel is richly layered with sweet cherry and spice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

The Rio Sordo cru is known for medium-bodied wines that show elegance and finesse. The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is my favorite wine among this set of new Riserva releases. This gorgeous wine is seamless in approach with balanced aromatic intensity that bridges dark fruit aromas against ethereal notes of cola, tar and licorice. There is an irresistible dash of white truffle buried deep within. The wine is powerful and firmly constructed, but the quality of the tannins is silky and polished.

The 2011 Barbaresco Roncaglie is darker and more powerful than the estate's straight Barbaresco. A powerful, structured wine, the 2011 opens up with hints of savory herbs, smoke, tobacco and menthol, all of which add nuance to the direct, expressive fruit. Stylistically, the Roncaglie is much more intense than the straight Barbaresco; not necessarily better or more complex, just a different expression of Nebbiolo.

I love the aromas of violets with liquorice and subtle brown sugar. This is a full-bodied merlot with fabulous tannins and a wonderful finish. It shows reserve and balance, with striking complex flavours of orange peel, light berries and chocolate. Pure magic. Goes on for minutes. One of the best Redigaffis ever. Better in 2016.
