The 2016 Barolo Capalot Vecchie Viti is dark, beguiling and very pretty. Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, kirsch, sweet red cherry and sweet pipe tobacco give the Capalot striking aromatic nuance and a real sense of exoticism that is quite inviting. Medium in body and constantly changing in the glass, the Capalot captures all of the complexities that make Nebbiolo and Barolo so fascinating. The tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty to look forward to once that happens.

The 2017 Barolo Capalot Vecchie Viti is another fabulous wine from Burzi. Dark, mysterious and beautifully layered in the glass, the Capalot is just captivating from the very first taste. Macerated black cherry, lavender, sage, spice, coffee and leather are some of the many notes that open over time in a Barolo that is deep yet also wonderfully transparent. The 2017 is so nuanced, so complex, so beautiful. It is also easily the best wine I have tasted from Burzi.

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rose delle Casasse is one of the most distinctive wines in all of Piedmont. It emerges from a tiny parcel in Neive first planted in 1913 with the Rose clone of Nebbiolo known for its aromatic intensity, that is rarely seen these days. Deeply bright and perfumed, the 2015 offers up an exotic mélange of sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice, rose petal and kirsch. There's terrific depth and plenty of substance to wrap it all together. The 2015 spent four years in wood, a combination of small barrels and medium-sized casks. I wonder what this wine would like taste like if it was aged in more neutral oak, as there is a bit of oak tannin here. Even so, the 2015 is an exquisite wine and a Barbaresco of real character.

“The 2010 Barbaresco Riserva Vanotu 60th Anniversary Limited Edition is drinking beautifully. Silky and perfumed, the 2010 is now entering its first plateau of maturity. Sweet tobacco, dried flowers, menthol and coffee lend striking aromatic complexity as the 2010 opens in the glass. The 2010 is rich and layered, as all of Giorgio Pelissero's wines are, but time has mellowed some of that exuberance.”

Experience the essence of Piedmontese grandeur with the Livia Fontana Barolo Riserva Bussia 2015. Hailing from one of Barolo's most iconic cru, the Bussia, each bottle tells a story of centuries-old tradition of the Fontana family. Impeccably crafted from hand-harvested Nebbiolo grapes, this single-vineyard beauty is cellared for five years, three of which are in Slavonian oak casks to achieve its distinctive Riserva status. The result is a deep garnet elixir, bursting with plush flavours of ripe cherries, tobacco and warm spices that linger on the palate. Its tenacious tannins and vibrant acidity promise a rewarding evolution for decades to come. Seductive yet serious, the Livia Fontana Barolo Riserva Bussia 2015 encapsulates the respectful integration of modern winemaking techniques with Alba's natural gifts. This hidden gem is a testament to the elegance of Italian winemaking, meriting a pride of place in any seasoned collector's cellar.
