2016 |
Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2016 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2016 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding with aeration to reveal a deep and brooding bouquet of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with notions of grilled meats, ceps, peonies and iodine. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a muscular chassis of ripe tannin that's cloaked in a core of vibrant and concentrated fruit, concluding with a long and thrillingly carnal finish. It will be fascinating to compare this with the qualitatively similar but stylistically very different 2015 vintage when both wines have 20 years on the clock.

2017 |
Armand Rousseau Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Clos de la Roches Grand Cru, which is tasted from two barrels since one is reduced, has a well defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, candied orange peel, hints of cassis and later, vanilla pod. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, slightly sorbet in character with hints of mulberry and fig towards the complex and quite persistent finish. One of the more cerebral Clos de la Roche releases from Domaine Rousseau.

Auvenay Meursault 1er Cru Les Narvaux 2008 (1x75cl) Vinous (96)The 2008 Meursault Narvaux emerges from the glass with tons of fruit and a radiant, expansive personality. This is a decidedly extroverted, flashy wine even within the context of the year. All of the elements flow together gracefully, culminating in an intense finish that is totally breathtaking.

2008 |
Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2008 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (100)Disgorged in September 2020 with four grams per liter dosage, Bollinger's 2008 Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes Françaises is one of the monumental wines of this great vintage. Soaring from the glass with a generous, honeyed bouquet of pear, orange rind, dried fruits, mocha and toasted bread, it's full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with huge concentration, racy acids and a pillowy mousse. Vinous, rich and sumptuous, it concludes with an immensely long, resonant finish. Bollinger waited until the grapes of these ungrafted vines attained 11% potential alcohol before harvesting, and they have produced the most powerful wine of the vintage—as well as one of the most profound.

2009 |
Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2009 (1x75cl) Vinous (96+)Bollinger’s 2009 Vieilles Vignes Françaises is tightly wound and reserved, which is quite surprising given the warm, dry weather of the vintage. That won’t be a problem in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. With a few hours of air, apricot, plum, spice, dried cherry and candied orange peel start to appear, but the 2009 remains rather taut. In some years, VVF can be quite opulent, 2002 and 2010 come to mind. The 2009, on the other hand is much more vibrant. I wouldn’t plan on opening a bottle anytime soon. VVF remains one of the most compelling wines – still or sparkling – in the world. It emerges from ungrafted Pinot Noir vines in Aÿ’s Chaudes Terres and Clos St. Jacques lieu-dits and is vinified and aged in barrel. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.

2010 |
Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2010 (1x75cl) Vinous (97)The 2010 Vieilles Vignes Françaises dazzles from the very first impression with striking aromatic presence and utterly captivating balance. Mirabelle, sweet red cherry, jasmine and passion fruit are some of the many notes that give the 2010 its decidedly racy, exotic personality. The 2010 exudes rare energy for this vintage, which was hardly easy in the field, not to mention real pedigree. It is absolutely unforgettable. I only hope to have a chance to taste it again someday.

2013 |
Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2013 (1x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2013 Vieilles Vignes Francaises is a powerhouse. Deep in color, the 2013 is rich and ample in feel. Apricot, spice, orange jam, cedar, dried herbs, ginger, honey and leather all meld together in a VVF that is decidedly opulent and vinous, despite the cool season and harvest that took place on September 27, late by present-day standards. Sadly, production has decreased steadily since 2008. Accumulated drought has been a challenge. Those conditions are, of course, amplified by the walls of the clos in these two parcels and the naturally warm climate of Aÿ. I find the 2013 decidedly exotic and a bit on the heavy side. Those lucky enough to own it will experience one of the most distinctive wines in all of Champagne. Production was less than 1,000 bottles.

1990 |
Cheval Blanc 1990 (1x75cl) Decanter (100)The standout wine of the entire tasting. Powerful, smooth, mouthfilling sweetness, still deeply coloured. You will find it hard to track down this wine on the market today, and even more difficult to avoid paying crazy sums for it, but I can assure you that it stands out for the intense, finely picked-out, fleshy fruit notes of sweet damson and plum unrolling against smoked coffee and liquorice notes. Truffles, tobacco and exotic spices are all here – and it’s hard to imagine how it can have done better. Oh, and Le Petit Cheval in this vintage was 98% Cabernet Franc, so another one to look out for if the beauty of the Cabernet in the main wine is anything to go by. Harvest 11-25 September, 40hl/ha yield. They made 76% first wine and 12% Petit Cheval, with the rest sold off in bulk.

Cheval Blanc 2019 (1x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £812.68
|
2019 |
Cheval Blanc 2019 (1x75cl) The Wine Independent (100)The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 58% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. 41 out of 53 blocks have had a part to play this year, representing 10 different soil types. The Grand Vin in 2019 represents 82% of production. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a lot of swirling to shake loose fragrant scents of Indian spice, potpourri, star anise, and cardamom, over a core of preserved plums, boysenberries, and charcoal with touches of wood smoke and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, rich and immediately impactful in the mouth, the layered nuances slowly expand, beautifully framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with cascading savory and earth flavors and lots of lingering mineral notes.

Christophe Roumier Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl) Vinous (94-96)The 2018 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has one of my favorite bouquets from Roumier this year, delivering heavenly scents of blueberry, violets and incense, all exquisitely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, and quite precise and linear. Not a powerful or voluminous Ruchottes, but full of tension and mineralité on the finish. Excellent and cerebral.

Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets 2001 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (92-94)Peaches, apricots, and spices are found in the redolent aromatics of the 2001 Meursault Caillerets. A honeyed, feminine wine, its personality at this stage is reminiscent of a great Meursault-Charmes, satin-textured, deep, dense, and focused. Loads of pulp-laden pears and spices can be found throughout its exceptional personality and finish. Projected maturity: now-2013.

2013 |
Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2013 (1x75cl) Vinous (94+)Pale, bright lemon-yellow. Flamboyant orange zest and stone aromas come across as a bit more exotic than those of the Genevrières. On the palate, the wine's creamy soft citrus fruit is energized by powerful sappy minerality. There's great stuffing here but this very long, palate-staining wine will need time in bottle.

Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 2007 (1x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2007 Meursault Les Rougeots is consistent with the bottle encountered a few months earlier, that hint of pumpkin and dried honey still lending complexity on the nose. The palate retains the same distinctive oily texture with stem ginger and roasted walnut flavors and the fennel popping up toward the finish to lend a bit of Provençal flair. Wonderful!

D'Yquem 2016 (1x75cl) James Suckling (99)A very classic Yquem. Breathtakingly wide spectrum of floral honey, exotic fruit (passion fruit, mango and pineapple), caramel and marzipan aromas. But none of this is a jot too much. In fact, the wine is extremely precise and finely nuanced. Wonderful freshness and textural complexity, in spite of the considerable concentration and extravagance. Very suave and sensual finish that goes on and on. Drink or hold.

2007 |
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2007 (1x75cl) Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (93+)Medium red. Precise aromas of violet, cocoa powder, smoky oak and earth, with red berries emerging with aeration. Tighter in the middle palate than the Grands-Echezeaux, showing somewhat cooler, soil-driven flavors and a sexy dusty minerality, but this still boasts impressive breadth and fat. Finishes classically dry and extremely long, with building tannins. An exciting wine in the making but austere today and in need of a decade of patience.

Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2013 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (93-95)The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaux Monts has great clarity on the nose, here veering more toward red fruit than the les Brulées, with subtle wet limestone and granitic scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied, very “gourmand” in the mouth, the kind of wine you don’t know whether to drink or eat (not in terms of texture but the flavors). There is a lovely meaty note that surfaces on the long finish. Tres bon vin!

Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos La Neore 2014 (1x75cl) Vinous (93)A cooler vintage, the 2014 Clos La Néore provides a greener edge aromatic expression with its green gooseberry, herbal notes and citrus. Firm, no messing stuff; don't expect a tender, soft Sancerre, this is steely. There is a mass of concentration packed in here. The fruit purity is outstanding and flavors of chamomile and almond meal linger on the long finish. Excellent.

Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos La Neore 2016 (1x75cl) Vinous (98)The 2016 Sancerre Clos La Néore is almost Riesling-like in its firm yet fine personality, its unswerving purity and its clear translation of place. Don't expect a seductive Sancerre, this is dry and steely with an appealing bitterness making for a very grown up white wine. It's starting to show early signs of development in its light almond/lanolin character alongside lemon tea. It offers exceptional concentration while being light bodied and provides a steely core of acidity, keeping the wine together and powering on. If you have any in your cellar, I can make myself available for dinner.

2015 |
Faiveley Chambertin-Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru Les Ouvrees Rodin 2015 (1x75cl) Vinous (94-97)(made from same plot of 60+-year-old vines on the Chambertin side of this grand cru as in the past; 100% destemmed): Bright dark red. Raspberry and a touch of reduction on the nose. Then dense, sappy and high-pitched in the mouth, with terrific intensity and saline complexity to the intense red berry flavors. Notes of menthol and crushed stone contribute to an impression of youthful tightness. Harder to taste today than the classic Clos de Bèze, which is showing more energy and salty minerality in the early going. But this is subtler and longer on the aftertaste, with a distinctly floral, feminine character that reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny. Very different in style from Faiveley's basic Clos de Bèze, but is it better?

A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage.

Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2008 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)Dark cherry and its pits and tart skin; black raspberry with its seeds; cumin and mace seem to be electrically charged in the Roumier 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras, with musky floral, savory red meat juice, and crushed stone dimensions on a firm palate adding riveting complexity. There is a certain textural austerity and restraint of sheer ripeness here, but what a concentrated ball of energy we have, making for a finish of spine- as well as tongue-tingling length! Look for at least 12-15 years of stimulation from this.

2010 |
Georges Roumier Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Blanc 2010 (1x75cl) Vinous (91+)Very ripe, lightly resiny aromas of apple, hay, nuts, ginger, minerals and exotic flowers. Youthfully disjointed on the palate, combining penetrating liquid minerality and strong, almost citrussy acidity; I wanted a bit more balancing fruit. Very chewy, salty, concentrated wine with a finishing suggestion of crab apple that suggests late harvesting. With its pronounced acid element, this is tough going today.
