Castro Ventosa Bierzo Valtuille Cepas Centenarias 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97+)

The floral 2018 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias is the next vintage after the 2015, as no 2016 or 2017 could be produced. This has a Northern Rhône nose that mixes violets and smoked meat, very showy. The palate is seamless and refined, with very fine, silky tannins. Like many of their wines, 2018 could very well be the finest vintage of this wine to date. This has much lower alcohol (13.2%) and more acidity. In 2018, they used all the white grapes from one of the plots, which could be a significant 6% of white grapes, and also some 5% Merenzao, so the wine is somewhat more fluid and nuanced. The two plots used for this wine are in the paraje of Matalospardos in Valtuille. This is the most complete and complex of the 2018s. 3,500 bottles and 36 magnums were filled in early May 2020.

Castro Ventosa Bierzo Valtuille Villegas 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2018 Valtuille Villegas had not been produced since 2015 and there is a big jump in precision and freshness: it's not just three years, it's three years of fine-tuning the work in the vineyards and winery. It fermented in a 3,000-liter oak vat with 100% full clusters and matured in two 225-liter oak barrels and one 500-liter oak barrel. This is perfumed and gravitates more toward Burgundy; it's elegant and long, with "only" 12.8% alcohol. It has very polished tannins and the inherent elegance of the sandy soils. It's perhaps lighter and doesn't have the complexity of the Cepas Centenarias, but it's really impressive. A Villegas of finesse. 1,300 bottles were filled in May 2020.

Castro Ventosa Valtuille Rapolao 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2018 Valtuille El Rapolao, like the rest of the single-vineyard wines, has not been bottled separately since 2015. This comes from the coolest paraje of Valtuille, as it gets the sun for one full hour after the rest of vineyards of the village. This was harvested early and matured exclusively in 500-liter oak barrels; it has lower alcohol and is more elegant than the 2014 and 2015. This was a little closed at first and needed some time in the glass to open up. It's a more floral and refined version of Villegas, with more layers, more depth and complexity. There's no rusticity here, which was in the character of the 2014 and 2015. Impressive! 1,700 bottles were filled in May 2020.

César Márquez El Rapolao 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2018 El Rapolao was produced with the grapes from the adjacent plot to the one from Castro Ventosa. It has maybe 5% white grapes and a faint reductive character—a flinty or gun powder note, turning into sesame seeds á la Coche-Dury with time—that the vineyard can have, with a lot less alcohol (13%) and is lighter and more ethereal and elegant. This is floral, clean and fresh, fulfilling the fresher and more elegant style of the 2018s. It follows the style of 2016, perhaps with a touch more depth and complexity, and it is more elegant, with more refined tannins and a chalky sensation. 984 bottles were filled in December 2019.

César Márquez Las Firmas Mencia 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93+)

I was also very impressed by the 2018 Las Firmas, a village wine from Valtuille, from vineyards mostly in Villegas, El Val, El Rapolao and El Llano, some of the fresher parts of the village, in the central part. Floral, expressive, open and elegant, the regional and village bottlings are truly impressive in 2018, with contained ripeness and great freshness. This year, the wine matured exclusively in 500-liter oak barrels. 2,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019.

César Márquez Perez La Salvación Godello 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2018 La Salvación is the only white produced by César Márquez in his personal project. It's pure Godello from two plots—one plot in Arganza regrafted from old Mencía to Godello 12 years ago and some 15% to 20% from another plot in Villafranca where there are some Godello old vines in between the Mencía. The destemmed grapes fermented and matured in 500-liter oak barrels, where the wine rested with the lees without bâtonnage for around one year. The wine was a little closed and shy and needed some time to take off—it's subtle, elegant and insinuating. In the future, he might do a single-vineyard white once he finds the right plot. The palate is serious and soil-driven, tasty, almost salty, with very focused flavors. 2018 delivered a good crop, and 1,358 bottles were produced. Each vintage has been different (2015 had flor, 2016 was sharp, and 2017 was a little more exuberant), and this is the most serous and complete to date. It should age nicely in bottle.

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2008 Corullon Moncerbal, also from a steep hillside vineyard, is a bit more tightly wound than the Las Lamas but is equally promising in its already complex, mouth-filling, impeccably balanced debonnair personality. Sophisticated and charming, all it needs is another 4-5 years of cellaring.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2011 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2011 Moncerbal is sheer reflection of the soil here, which is pure rock, pure slate: it imparts a very specific minerality to the wine. Extremely perfumed, it makes me think of quince, candied oranges, jasmine, almost the grape like sensation of Muscat, plenty of wild flowers and blueberry. A delirious nose, but not as exotic as other 2011s. Can you say the nose is blue? The palate displays round and silky tannins, a touch spicy (white pepper), with superb length. This is the one with the stronger personality. Drink 2016-2025.

2018

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2018 (3x75cl) 2018 Moncerbal is exceptionally fragrant with near crystalline purity. It is a fine, elegant, dancing wine with extremely subtle black berry and black cherry fruit coming through. Its incredible freshness cuts like a knife through the palate which is mineral beyond belief, and the length goes on forever. If you are ever lucky enough to visit this astonishing 1.5ha vineyard, you will see how the vines cling, unbelievably, to vertiginous slopes. That determination somehow comes through in the precision and focus of this stunning 2018 wine. It is exceptional. Drink 2024-2035.

Raul Perez (Vizcaina) Gundinas 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

La Gundiñas is the wine that shows the most differences between 2017 and 2018. The 2017 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas is dark and concentrated, a wine of sun, while the 2018 is delicate and feels like a mini Bonnes Mares! This is quite like a Cornas—meaty, juicy, a little reticent and powerful, with abundant tannins. This is one wine that behaves better in 2017 than in 2016. This is a plot that has ups and down; it might be more regular in the future, as they finally bought it in 2018. Some 5,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.

Raul Perez (Vizcaina) Rapolao 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

I was impressed by the 2017 La Vizcaína El Rapolao, but the warm vintage was very good for a warmer vineyard like El Rapolao. This is hands-down my favorite of the 2017s from La Vizcaína, the wine that shows more freshness. It's harmonious and perhaps was harvested a little earlier than the others. Like the other wines from the range, this 2017 has more color than the 2018, as well as more power and a little more concentration, and it's also denser than the 2018, with tannins that are grittier and a little drier. But if I didn't have the 2018 next to this, I would only be praising it, because the 2017 is truly impressive, all in place and simply one step up in power and all the rest to keep the balance. 10,000 bottles were filled in May 2019. This is a late-budding vineyard, and it didn't suffer the effect of the spring hail from the year.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2017 La Vizcaína La Vitoriana has depth and power, inherent to the vineyard, a cool site that behaves well in a warm year like 2017, but in 2017 I still prefer El Rapolao. The fruit is a little darker and riper without excess (it's all relative when you compare, and sometimes comparisons are tedious...), as the cooler exposition takes the warmer weather better. It's textured and serious. 6,300 bottles were filled, as the north-facing exposures like this escaped the frost of the 2017 spring. It as bottled in May 2019.
