Burghound (93-96)Don't Miss! An overtly floral-suffused nose features notes of lilac, carnation and acacia blossom that are trimmed in spice, citrus rind and soft wood wisps. The strikingly pure and beautifully defined larger-bodied flavors are not super-dense but I very much like the texture, all wrapped in a clean, bone-dry and compact finish that flashes plenty of focused power. This could also use a bit more depth but that shouldn't be an issue. As an aside, for those readers who were Sauzet fans 25-ish years ago, the '21 Bâtard reminds me quite a bit of the 1993, which is one of Sauzet's all-time great vintages. |

Emanating from the botanical grandeur of Italy's northern Piedmont region, the exquisite Francesco Brigatti, Colline Novaresi, Motziflon Nebbiolo 2017 is a testament to masterful viticulture. This delicate Nebbiolo - named 'Motziflon' for its common vernacular meaning 'small fire' - is grown on hillsides blessed with pebbly alluvial soils and a temperate climate, which fosters a unique complexity and intensity in the wine. Crafted meticulously by the skilled artisan Francesco Brigatti, a practitioner revered for his dedication to sustainable production and meticulous, low-yield cultivation, this offering is an authentic embodiment of tradition and precision. Abundant in red fruit flavours with layers of wild herbs and hints of violet in the bouquet, this medium-bodied Nebbiolo provides a lingering finish teeming with subtle spice notes and sensations of fine-grained tannins. Podere di Valloni Colline Novaresi Sass Russ 2017 is a mastercrafted Italian red wine, hailing from Novara hills in Piedmont. An exemplar of artisanal winemaking, this biodynamically-grown gem is the labour of love by the esteemed Podere dei Valloni estate. The winery employed traditional vinification techniques with fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in oak barrels to procure the rich, elegant structure of the wine. The 2017 Sass Russ is a harmonious blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina grapes that imparts a vibrant ruby red hue. As an expert connoisseur, you'll relish the bouquet of wild berries, mixed spices, and light notes of vanilla. On the palate, this wine surprises with a striking balance of tannin, acidity, and fruit-forward lushness. Podere di Valloni Colline Novaresi Sass Russ 2017 is a testament to the Piedmontese terroir; a fine wine that deserves a place in every sophisticated cellar. |

Burghound (94)Hints of mineral reduction and matchstick character suffuse the elegant aromas of honeysuckle, acacia blossom and spiced pear that are trimmed in wisps of wood and lemon rind. The super-sleek, intense and nicely detailed flavors possess good richness on the citrusy and beautifully long finale where moderate warmth slowly emerges. This elegant effort is perhaps a bit bolder and powerful than is usually the case and a BBM that should age gracefully over the next decade. |
