2015 |
Anwilka 2015 (6x75cl) James Suckling (95)This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate's full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot. Best in 2020.

|
2017 |
Anwilka 2017 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2017 Anwilka was aged for 19 months in 50% new oak (400-liter barrels) and the rest in second-fill. It has a pure, seductive bouquet of boysenberry and cassis fruit, the vanilla-y oak seamlessly integrated and not imposing itself like older vintages of Anwilka. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, and slightly granular in texture, presenting layered black fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and touches of cassis. Very seductive on the finish. This is an almost Napa-like Anwilka that requires 3–4 years in barrel.

2018 |
Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl) Matthew Jukes (18.5+)Plush and packed with cassis, this is a tremendously flashy wine with deep wells of liqueur-like fruit coupled with strident oak and a lovely bright, dry finish. Yearning to be set free, BCSS is like a prize-fighter itching for the bell so it can launch itself at its opponent. This is an amazing Cabernet and while it has the stuffing to go deep into the later rounds, I love its toned flanks and glistening musculature right now.

2019 |
Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2019 (6x75cl) The benchmark cuvée from the exceptionally talented Reenen Borman, at the helm of this mythical estate since 2010 - this wine is spoken about in hushed tones amongst experts, critics.
50% whole-bunch fermentation has given the wine monolithic structure, without a single brick out of place. 25% of the wine was raised in 400 litre oak barrels, imparting gentle seasoning and further fine tannins, whilst the remaining 75% was raised in concrete eggs, preserving the fruit's sensational freshness and impossible purity.
Naturally, this wine is infantile due to its quality and structure, but already it displays a mesmeric mélange of violets, dried flowers, herbs and spices on the nose. Positively quivering with energy at this stage, the wine’s acidity shoots like Artemis’ arrow across the palate, losing no momentum through the endless finish. It is hard to overstate the juddering quality of Epilogue – Tim Atkin MW said of the 2017 that it was “now established as one of the Cape’s great Syrahs”... It is now one of the world’s greatest wines.

2012 |
De Trafford Cabernet Franc 2012 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)Bright ruby-red. Sexy, soil-inflected scents of blueberry, tobacco, black tea and spices. Plush, pliant and sweet on the palate, offering considerable immediate appeal and finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and very good length. Not especially complex but delicious and perfumed right now; sweeter and more pliant than the 2013 version but without that wine's lift or tannic clout.

De Trafford Cabernet Franc 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)Bright ruby-red. Lovely floral lift to the aromas of blackberry, blueberry, tobacco and licorice. Plush, very ripe aromas of medicinal black cherry, dark berries and licorice. An almost creamy style of Cabernet Franc but with a restrained sweetness. Not hugely deep but finishes with sneaky length. Ultimately more complex and gripping than the 2012 version.

2008 |
De Trafford Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is de-stemmed and raised in 40% new oak for 23 months. It has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, black plum and fresh dates that is well defined. The palate has a toasty entry with a charcoal tincture. The acidity is in tune with the oaky black fruit, while the finish is sweet, with a slight bitter edge. Drink now-2016.

2011 |
De Trafford Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (87)The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 3% Petit Verdot and 12% Merlot, has a very attractive loamy bouquet that blossoms in the glass, offering blackberry and raspberry coulis scents with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin on the entry, quite firm in the mouth with tarry black fruit, although I discerned a nagging herbal edge on the finish that just knocks this off balance. This is a good read... up until the final chapter. I would like to re-examine this after another 12 months.

2015 |
De Trafford Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)A full range of fruits can be seen with the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. Red, black and blue fruit are all present on the nose, with oak tones hiding in the back as well as subtle earth and cigar box aromas. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, dark cherry, cassis and juicy blueberry glide across the mid-palate, showing integrated soft, earthy aromas of leather and inorganic rock, ending with a long finish. This is a pleasing and structured Cabernet with a focused balance. The wine spent 22 months in oak barrels, 35% new. 8,040 bottles were made.

De Trafford Chenin Blanc 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (90)The 2012 Chenin Blanc, which comes from five parcels and sees a three-hour skin contact and 100% barrel-fermented (natural yeasts) has a sensual and rounded bouquet with touches of brioche, butterscotch, popcorn and almond. The palate is sweet on the honeyed entry with lemon curd, guava and coconut notes, touches of brioche and patisserie coming toward the well-defined finish. Irresistible.

2014 |
De Trafford Chenin Blanc 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (87)The 2014 Chenin Blanc, which comes from older vines on the estate and matured in 15% new oak, has a rather tight-lipped bouquet that does not quite express the grape variety with as much passion as I would have liked. The palate is well balanced and more satisfying than the bouquet. Quite waxy in texture with good acidity, it just reins everything in towards the finish that tails off a bit abruptly. Not bad, but could be better.

De Trafford Chenin Blanc 2017 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)A clean and refreshing Chenin with classic citrus tones, the 2017 Chenin Blanc was 100% barrel fermented with natural yeasts. On the palate, the wine is consistent with nose and has a good structure, showing clean, correct citrus along with soft, just-ripe stone fruits and white flowers. Medium-bodied, the wine ends clean and crisp with a moderate to long finish. Just over 10,000 bottles were made.

De Trafford Elevation 393 2006 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (90)A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 13% Shiraz, the 2006 Elevation 393 is raised in French oak for 22 months. It has a very ripe, slightly muffled bouquet with secondary aromas of wild mushroom, game, mint and a touch of cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannins and lovely peppery black fruit. It shows a little more conviction than the 2005 and should age well for another 8-10 years. Drink now-2020.

De Trafford Elevation 393 2008 (6x75cl) Wine Spectator (93)Dark earth, roasted plum, singed cedar and coffee notes form the frame of this old-school Cabernet, with bay, tobacco, mulled currant, mint and steeped blackberry fruit at the core. The long finish lets the savory notes play out beautifully. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc.

2009 |
De Trafford Elevation 393 2009 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (90)A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 14% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Elevation 393 has an opulent bouquet with dark cherries and wild strawberry, just a very slight tinny element suggesting a little reduction that will disappear. The palate is medium-bodied with tarry black fruit, good tannic backbone, and plenty of tar and tobacco notes with a slightly austere, but appealing finish. I wonder if this will flesh out with bottle age? Note that the 2009 is being released after the 2010 Elevation 393.
