Domaine Anne Gros Richebourg Grand Cru 2005 (6x75cl)

Vinous (96+)

Good deep red-ruby. Pungent dark raspberry, violet, bitter chocolate and orange zest on the nose. The palate explodes with urgent crushed berry, floral and mineral flavors, showing great richness but none of the obvious warm side of the vintage. The palate-staining, mounting finish, still a bit brooding, features noble tannins and lingering notes of dark fruits, flowers and licorice. These wines have all turned out at the high end of my projected ratings a year ago and should be cellar treasures.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru is a Burgundy of Cistercian austerity. Searing tannins give the Richebourg its trademark sense of energy and vibrancy. White pepper, mint, dried flowers and bright red berry fruit are all beautifully delineated, with underlying beams of minerality and salinity that lend dimension. Richebourg is very rarely finessed, but is more typically a wine of brawn and pure power, as it is here. A range of bright, floral/savory accents suggest a bit more elegance may lie ahead. We will see. My colleagues appreciate the Richebourg more than I do. Harvest began the afternoon of September 8, after Romanée-Conti. Rain on the 9th caused a break in picking for the day. The last of the Richebourg came in on the 10th.

2009

Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (94+)

Full medium red. Sweet, deep aromas of raspberry, strawberry and smoky minerality. Large-scaled, seamless and wonderfully full but still very young, with dark berry and crushed stone flavors complemented by brown spices and saline soil tones. Most impressive today on the very long, firm finish, which features extremely fine tannins. (The Suchots shows a higher-pitched floral character today, but these tannins are nobler and riper.) This should reward extended bottle aging. Indeed, Charles van Canneyt believes that, despite the dominant warm-vintage character shown by so many 2009s in the early gong, "the terroirs will come back after 10 or 12 years."
