Wine Advocate (97+)

Another killer Cote Rotie is the 2009 Cote Rotie la Landonne and it's a bigger, rich, more opulent version of the 2010. Raspberries, chocolate, exotic flowers, violets and ample minerality all give way to a full-bodied, seamless, layered 2009 that has massive mid-palate depth and a monster finish. Raised all in new oak, it should be drinkable at an earlier age than the '10, yet have a similar evolution.

Domaine Jamet Cote-Rotie 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous-Josh Raynolds (95-97)

Tasted, as usual, in components. #1) Les Lezards: bright red fruit, flowers and spices; seamless texture and a zesty mineral overtone that builds with air. #2) Gerine: smoke-accented blue fruits and plush texture; round and weighty with a jolt of pepper adding back-end spiciness and cut. #3) Fontgeant: hugely aromatic, showing intense, mineral-driven medicinal cherry and floral character, a hint of olive and strong back-end thrust. #4) Côte Baudin and Moutonne: deep and rich, showing powerful black and blue fruit qualities and a candied licorice flourish. Plenty of weight here and an intensely spicy back half. #5) Moutonne, Côte Rozier, Côte Blonde and Rochains: sexy, mineral-tinged red and blue fruits and candied flowers on the nose; sweet and seamless in texture, with sneaky tannins adding framework and final grip. #6) Fontgeant, Bonnivière, Tartaras and Leyat: vibrant and sharply focused, showing intense, mineral-tinged blue fruit and floral qualities and an exotic Asian spice overtone; the mineral note dominates with air. #7) Le Plomb: hugely aromatic, displaying red fruit preserve, incense and exotic spice qualities, silky texture and impressive power as well as a delicate finishing touch. #8) La Landonne: wild, expansive dark berry liqueur, olive and licorice qualities and serious heft and breadth; livelier with air, but this is a massive bruiser. The final wine should show Jamet's typical blend of power and finesse and it also looks to be a more brawny wine than many other '16s from the appellation, displaying some of the richness that I associate with the 2015s.

Domaine Jamet Cote-Rotie 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-96)

The 2017 Cote Rotie was still in separate lots when I visited, yet I came away with remarkably similar impressions from the Gerine (fragrant charming and silky) and le Plomb (taut, intense and structural) as I did last year. A number of other lots will go into the final assemblage (Chavaroche, Fongeant, Lezardes and several more, probably including La Landonne). There's more cracked pepper and violets on the nose of the 2017 than the 2018 and also a touch more crispness and tension on the palate.

Wine Advocate (99)

A step up over the other two single vineyard releases, the 2011 Cote Rotie la Landonne is an incredible wine that knocks it out of the park in the vintage. Its inky purple/ruby color is followed by to-die-for notes of cassis, black olives, truffles, graphite and crushed rock. Full-bodied, massively concentrated, thick and unctuous, it has the vintage’s flamboyant fruit profile, yet backs it up with a stacked mid-palate, serious amounts of tannin and a finish that just won’t quite. It’s relatively approachable now due to its glycerin and fat, yet needs a decade of cellaring and will knock your socks off over the following two decades or more.

The 2012 Côte Rôtie La Mouline reminds me of the 2011 with its upfront, incredibly perfumed nose of spring flowers, cured meats, roasted herbs, olives and sweet cassis fruit. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, mouth-filling and already impossible to resist, it expands on the palate and I guarantee this beauty will put a smile on your face anytime over the coming two decades.

Wine Advocate (98)

Similar to the La Mouline with its forward, incredibly sexy style, the 2012 Côte Rôtie La Turque (there’s 7% Viognier in the blend) offers a saturated purple color to go with meaty, smoky notes of cassis, cured meats, chocolate and roasted herbs. It’s a big mouthful of a wine, with full-bodied richness and a stacked mid-palate, but it has a seamless, weightless texture, perfectly ripe tannin and a blockbuster finish. I’d happily drink a glass today, but it should be at its finest from 2020-2046.

The bouquet is bold, on beef stock, iron, dense black berries, has a poised, integral sweetness, airs of raspberry liqueur, oak smoke. It’s a solid start. The palate has the theme of mineral well placed through it, a lot of mountain of matter, thickening towards the finish. It holds sparkling and dense fruits – cassis, soaked cherries. It is vibrant and very full; there is real flair off its sun-dialled deck. It has great juice; it’s a treat to taste this. Decanting advised. It has a lot of black fruits, a belle freshness to underpin it; it’s very long.

Vinous (96)

Inky ruby. Powerful, spice- and smoke-accented aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, candied violet, licorice and cola, along with a hint of exotic spices that builds in the glass. Sweet, palate-staining cassis, boysenberry, floral pastille and licorice flavors turn livelier with air. Impressively concentrated but surprisingly energetic, courtesy of its spine of smoky minerality. Finishes sappy, youthfully chewy and extremely long, with steadily mounting tannins and lingering florality. 25% new oak.

Incredible, soaring, perfumed fragrance, violets, incense and star anise. Fresh and pure on the palate, with fine tannins and a little sappy, balsamic back note from the oak. The oak is aromatically quite present, lending cinnamon to the display. No heaviness on the mid palate. Very much in the Gaillard house style. The oak is liberally applied, but it works well.

I tasted from a barrel that Rostaing said represented something "close to the final blend" of the 2016 Cote Rotie Ampodium. This medium-bodied wine features classic notes of violets, spice and raspberries and has ample flesh covering its silky, tea-like backbone of ripe tannins. It should drink well young.

Moving to the Côte Rôties, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Ampodium is a head turner and is going to rival the 2010 as the greatest vintage of this cuvée to date. A deep ruby/purple hue is followed by sumptuous notes of ripe dark fruits, ground herbs, scorched earth, and violets. Full-bodied, deep, and powerful on the palate, it has the wonderful sense of opulence and purity that’s the hallmark of the vintage.

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2016 Cote Rotie La Cote Blonde (from the lieu-dit of the same name—not a blend of sites) is a terrific effort. It blends the structure of la Viallière with the elegance of la Landonne, making it a truly complete and compelling bottle. Some mocha, black olive and meaty notes lend it a savory cast, while the palate is creamy and concentrated, firm but silky. It's medium to full-bodied, with a fine, licorice-tinged finish that lingers a good long time. It should drink well for 20+ years.

Even better than last year, the recently bottled 2017 Cote Rotie La Cote Blonde was singing when I tasted it back in July. Floral and berry notes accent mocha-tinged aromas in this medium to full-bodied wine. It's silky, long and intense, with a couple of decades of life ahead of it. It's simply difficult to describe the waves of savory complexity this wine now shows, coupled with a succulent texture and tremendous length.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2005 Cote Rotie La Landonne (8,500 bottles) offers the scorched earth, bacon fat, tapenade, and black fruits that come from this northern site in Cote Rotie. Tannic, superbly concentrated, and beginning to close down, this is a big mouthful of classic wine meant for long-term cellaring. Give it 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades.

Subtle notes of baking spices frame hints of tea, olives and raspberries on the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie la Landonne. A paragon of elegance, it's medium to full-bodied, but silky from start to lingering finish. It's a wine that's pretty much guaranteed to make even the steeliest curmudgeon smile, as it's so bright, ephemeral and luscious. It's not the rich, ripe wine the 2015 is, but it's suave, complex and long.

A single vineyard offering from the Cote Blonde, the superb 2009 Cote Rotie La Chatillonne is still resting in barrel and demi-muid. It possesses terrific caramelized red and black fruit notes intermixed with notions of lychee nuts, apricot jam, cassis, licorice and black cherries. This intense, full-bodied, elegant, seductive, rich 2009 still has some tannin to shed, so 4-5 years of cellaring is recommended. It should last for 25+ years thereafter.

Full-bodied, deep, and powerful on the palate, it has the wonderful sense of opulence and purity that’s the hallmark of the vintage.

Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie Cote Blonde 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2016 Cote Rotie La Cote Blonde (from the lieu-dit of the same name—not a blend of sites) is a terrific effort. It blends the structure of la Viallière with the elegance of la Landonne, making it a truly complete and compelling bottle. Some mocha, black olive and meaty notes lend it a savory cast, while the palate is creamy and concentrated, firm but silky. It's medium to full-bodied, with a fine, licorice-tinged finish that lingers a good long time. It should drink well for 20+ years.

Wine Advocate (98)

Even better than last year, the recently bottled 2017 Cote Rotie La Cote Blonde was singing when I tasted it back in July. Floral and berry notes accent mocha-tinged aromas in this medium to full-bodied wine. It's silky, long and intense, with a couple of decades of life ahead of it. It's simply difficult to describe the waves of savory complexity this wine now shows, coupled with a succulent texture and tremendous length.

Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie La Landonne 2005 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2005 Cote Rotie La Landonne (8,500 bottles) offers the scorched earth, bacon fat, tapenade, and black fruits that come from this northern site in Cote Rotie. Tannic, superbly concentrated, and beginning to close down, this is a big mouthful of classic wine meant for long-term cellaring. Give it 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades.

Wine Advocate (97)

Subtle notes of baking spices frame hints of tea, olives and raspberries on the nose of the 2016 Cote Rotie la Landonne. A paragon of elegance, it's medium to full-bodied, but silky from start to lingering finish. It's a wine that's pretty much guaranteed to make even the steeliest curmudgeon smile, as it's so bright, ephemeral and luscious. It's not the rich, ripe wine the 2015 is, but it's suave, complex and long.

Jeb Dunnuck (95-97+)

A bigger, richer, more brooding wine, the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Landonne boasts stunning (and classic La Landonne) aromas and flavors of black fruits, smoked meat, and scorched earth. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and structured, this is one of the few 2017s that’s going to really demand cellaring.

The outstanding 2009 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde possesses copious notes of sweet black olives, black cherries, new saddle leather, herbs and spice box in its evolved, sexy, medium to full-bodied, lush personality. Loaded with fruit, depth and purity, it should drink well for 10-15 years.

Vidal-Fleury Cote-Rotie La Chatillonne 2009 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-94)

A single vineyard offering from the Cote Blonde, the superb 2009 Cote Rotie La Chatillonne is still resting in barrel and demi-muid. It possesses terrific caramelized red and black fruit notes intermixed with notions of lychee nuts, apricot jam, cassis, licorice and black cherries. This intense, full-bodied, elegant, seductive, rich 2009 still has some tannin to shed, so 4-5 years of cellaring is recommended. It should last for 25+ years thereafter.
