Vivid red fruit, Morello cherries, wild strawberry and pressed violets on the nose, the aromatics here feel so animated and exquisitely defined. The palate is perfectly balanced with a killer line of acidity: crystalline red fruit, filigree tannins and more freshness than it knows what to do with. There is a sense of "channeled intensity" in this Chambertin and whilst there is no question that it is a 20- to 30-years wine, I felt no guilt in polishing this off in its youth. Not quite so fine tannins when not fully decorticated, it would seem. But a huge follow through. If it were not for the utter brilliance of the Echezeaux, I might score this even higher! More purple than black in colour. Still has some rose petals which cannot be common in Clos Vougeot! Super deep with some liquorice behind where the fruit darkens, but up front and on the nose it is more dark raspberry and redcurrant. Not quite so fine tannins when not fully decorticated, it would seem. But a huge follow through. If it were not for the utter brilliance of the Echezeaux, I might score this even higher! Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)5 Star Wine. A rich dark purple. The nose is astonishing because of its definition. It is a slightly darker and certainly less lushly appealing style. Peppery notes are in balance but the volume of fruit surmounts. This is a fine and very noble example which could well leap ahead of the 2020 in the rankings. There is such a wealth of fruit, on the cusp of red and black, which returns in the very long finish. Bravo. Drink from 2030-2040. |

The advantage of the vines which were less ravaged. Then darker fruit, almost a chocolate nose, a little foursquare as per its terroir, small waves of darker fruit coming through behind, a dark plum for example, then an evenly balanced finish between fruit, tannin and acidity. Drink from 2030-2040. |

Burghound (95)A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time. |

In hot, dry years such as 2019 and 2020 the bottom bit does very well because it retains moisture. 20% bought in. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Refined, high-toned nose with a meaty undertow. Then a notably sweet palate attack and quite chunky and forceful. Some whole-bunch influence. Clearly a grand cru. Still youthful with a lightly spicy nose. Lots of energy. |
