Arnoux-Lachaux Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

The Arnoux 2006 Clos Vougeot displays a more overt sense of structure than its Nuits and Vosne premier cru siblings, with the tannins segueing into a tactile sense of somehow ore-like mineral impingement. But at the same time, the primary fruit character here is unusually sweet, with an almost candied sense of cassis, black raspberry, and dark chocolate, offset by the bitter sides of fruit skin and cocoa, as well as by the wine's smoky and mineral notes, and augmented by overtones of mint, soy, and cedar. This is unusually rich, powerful, and architecturally ambitious for a 2006 – if not as refined as many, even among its stable mates – and likely to be worth cellaring for 4-5 years before enjoying for the subsequent 10-12.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

As I stated last year, there is no Hommage a Jacques Perrin in 2006, but Beaucastel’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is performing even better from bottle than it did last year. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet perfume of black truffles, camphor, earth, incense, new saddle leather, and loads of peppery, blackberry, and herb-infused, meaty, black cherry fruit. Deep, full-bodied, and dense, with sweet tannin, this explosively rich Chateauneuf is a stronger effort than the 2005, 2004, or 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.

Wine Spectator (96)

A textbook blanc de blancs in a relatively opulent style, with ample grilled nut, brioche and spice character alongside classic flavors of poached apricot, kumquat, oyster shell and lemon blossom. This rich profile is well-defined by racy acidity, sleek and well-cut, driving the long, lacy finish. A beauty. Drink now through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 4,500 cases made, 185 cases imported.

Daniel Schuster Omihi Hills Pinot Noir Selection 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

Produced only in the finest years, the 2006 Omihi Selection Pinot Noir has an introverted, earthy nose that reveals more red cherry, gamey qualities with each pour. The palate is medium-bodied, very well-balanced and refined with an engaging sense of natural being. Touches of boysenberry, cedar and cloves towards the finish, I still felt it just took its foot off the pedal right at the end where I had expected more tautness and focus. Still, a very fine Pinot Noir.

Wine Advocate (90)

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 13% Shiraz, the 2006 Elevation 393 is raised in French oak for 22 months. It has a very ripe, slightly muffled bouquet with secondary aromas of wild mushroom, game, mint and a touch of cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannins and lovely peppery black fruit. It shows a little more conviction than the 2005 and should age well for another 8-10 years. Drink now-2020.

Decanter (98)

The Dom Perignon Rosé 2006 is simply amazing. Notes of raspberry, spices and mint jump from the glass in a seductive combination. The texture in the mouth is of precise, crystalline, laser-like tannins in an opulent style. A very great success in a vintage that was not always easy in Champagne.

Duemani Suisassi Syrah Toscana 2006 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2006 Suisassi (Syrah) is a gorgeous effort redolent of ripe dark fruit, violets, French oak, minerals and new leather. The wine possesses superb vibrancy, clarity and definition in a style that manages to be medium in body despite achieving surprising richness. Although the wine is delicious today, it could use a few years in bottle for the oak to better integrate. The Suisassi was fermented and aged in French oak barrels, the same technique D’Attoma uses with Le Macchiole’s Scrio. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021.

Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns 2006 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88-89+)

Assembled from tank before bottling when I last tasted it, Barthod's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Beaux Bruns smells of wood smoke, brown spices, and blond tobacco, along with fresh cherry and rhubarb. The combination of tartness and slight tannic grip render the palate here somewhat severe, although there is also more sense of fullness exhibited by many of its fellow Barthod crus, and there is admirable concentration of spice, fruit, and smoky, herbal notes in the finish. This may smooth out after a couple of years in bottle, but I suspect some legacy of hail will remain, and I would be inclined to drink it within 4-5.

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2006 Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno is a decidedly more important and interesting wine in this vintage. A fresh, vibrant hue leads to glorious dark fruit, menthol, spices and sweet medicinal herbs. Elements of classic austerity and ripeness play off each other as this structured, powerful Barolo opens up in the glass. This is a fabulous vintage for the Santo Stefano di Perno. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

A stunner, with mouthwatering vibrancy and focus married to all of the opulence of a great 2006 Champagne. Richly fragrant, offering nutmeg, cardamom, jasmine, lemongrass, espresso and grilled nut notes enmeshed in a core of black currant and tangerine fruit flavors. Beautifully creamy and complex, this glides across the palate on the long, lasting finish. Disgorged Winter 2017-2018. Drink now through 2030.

Wine & Spirit Magazine (91)

The second wine of Vieux Château Certan, this is a fine 2006 Pomerol in its own right. It's a big wine, layered with scents of plums, violets, green spice and cherries. The tannins show a lot of extract but remain supple, their dark chocolate depth augmenting the fruit. It's a masculine style of Pomerol, the alcohol adding richness and fullness. For roast duck.

Linkwood (Signatory) Speyside Single Malt Cask Strength Collection Cask 2 Sherry Finish 2006 (1x70cl)
Inc. VAT: £194.40
2006

Linkwood (Signatory) Speyside Single Malt Cask Strength Collection Cask 2 Sherry Finish 2006 (1x70cl) Linkwood is a legendary distillery among whisky fanatics; a quintessential Speyside with a gentle fruit-driven spirit quality that takes equally well to Sherry wood as to Bourbon. This 2006 distillation is a phenomenal blend of both, matured primarily in Bourbon barrels before finishing in a fresh, first fill Sherry butt for the final three months. This whisky has a remarkable, luxurious, deep tawny colour, taking on aromatics of sultana and warm baking spices to complement the delicate texture that comes from the gentler Bourbon wood. Thank goodness Signatory elected to bottle this at 13 years as any longer and the youthful vibrance would surely have faded. It is a masterclass in decision making! Cask #2, Natural cask strength 58.4%. From a single cask of 713 bottles.

Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The red flagship 2006 Viña Tondonia Reserva was inspired by the vineyards of the Médoc but produced with local grapes, 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, which achieved 13% alcohol in 2006. It always matures in used American oak barriques for some six years. The oldest of all the reds I tasted, it was also the one with more freshness, which speaks to the quality of the vineyard. This takes the lion's share of the 400,000 bottles the winery produces, with some 220,000 bottles filled over a period of 12 consecutive days in May 2014.

Decanter (97)

Fantastic from the start. A colossal power of beautiful rumbling Pinot maturity. It’s like chewing on the ripest grapes from Aÿ and Verzenay. At the same time ultra stylish: unmistakable Cristal essence of peach and mango sweetness, pineapple, coconut, vanilla, sprightly acidity and citrus blossom. Many similarities with 2002 but with a clearer Pinot touch.

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2006 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Sandrone’s 2006 Barolo Le Vigne possesses awesome balance as intricately woven layers of aromas and flavors come together in the glass. The 2006 is an especially powerful Le Vigne boasting a solid core of floral, red fruits supported by firm yet elegant tannins. This, too, shows the considerable drive and focus that is the hallmark of the vintage. The wine’s overall balance is impeccable. Le Vigne is made from parcels in Vignane (Barolo), Conterni and Ceretta (Monforte) and Merli (Novello). The wines are aged separately for a year in 500-liter barrels. The final blend is assembled, after which the wine spends an additional year in oak prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

Made in the very best vintages, Pol Roger's white-golden colored 2006 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill offers a very clear, precise, ripe and complex bouquet with fruity and refreshingly chalky, nutty and brioche notes. Full-bodied and complex on the palate, the 2006 is supple, round and rich but also fine, elegant, fresh and well structured. It has a harmonious yet tight, persistent and very promising finish that puts this silky textured, Pinot-dominated cuvée (the exact blend is a closely guarded family secret) on the border of fatty richness. But the mousse gives so much freshness and finesse that everything seems lifted here. Though I have very limited experience with matured Champagnes from Pol Roger and namely Churchill, I suppose the 2006 will benefit a lot from further bottle aging. But don't get me wrong: the wine is already gorgeous. Tasted June 2018, disgorged in June 2017.

Pontet Canet 2006 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is all about the detail and precision in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth: lightly toasted black fruit, dried orange peel, cedar and a pinch of white pepper. This feels very cohesive and poised with just a touch of mint entering right on the finish. What a great wine from Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme. Go grab the corkscrew now, but don't feel that this wine has to be opened for another 5-6 years. Tasted January 2016.

Ridge Monte Bello Red 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

As it approaches age twelve, the 2006 Monte Bello is still quite reserved on the nose and on the palate, unwinding in the glass with a bouquet of cassis, cherries, pencil lead, dark chocolate, cigar box and dried rose petal. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and still firmly structured, carrying considerable extract and concluding with chalky grip. Rich, concentrated and powerful, the raw materials are very impressive but they're still wrapped up in some formidable structure. Eric Baugher describes the 2006 Monte Bello as a sleeper vintage: backward and tannic when it was young, and released in a challenging economy, and that's the case today. Like the 1995 vintage, I suspect this will be a Monte Bello that really hits its stride at age 20 rather than age ten, but patient consumers with time on their side should give it serious consideration.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2006 Shiraz was sourced from a single parcel of 98 year old vines yielding a minuscule 0.5 tons of fruit per acre. It was aged for 36 months in seasoned French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up a superb, room-filling bouquet of cigar box, baking spices, smoked meat, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate this harmonious, velvety-textured effort is voluptuous, full-flavored, succulent, and exceptionally long. Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2006 (1x600cl)

The 2006 Comtes de Champagne is striking, especially in the way it brings together elements of ripeness and freshness in a hypothetical blend of the 2002 and 2004. Smooth and creamy on the palate, the 2006 is all about texture. There is a real feeling of density and weight in the 2006, qualities I expect to see grow with time in the bottle. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2006 has been nothing short of magnificent both times I have tasted it. Comtes de Champagne remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne. I suggest buying a case and following it over the next 20-30 years, which is exactly what I intend to do. There is little doubt the 2006 Comtes de Champagne is a magical Champagne in the making.

Dom Perignon Rose 2006 (3x75cl)

Standish Single Vineyard Shiraz The Standish 2006 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2006 Shiraz was sourced from a single parcel of 98 year old vines yielding a minuscule 0.5 tons of fruit per acre. It was aged for 36 months in seasoned French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up a superb, room-filling bouquet of cigar box, baking spices, smoked meat, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate this harmonious, velvety-textured effort is voluptuous, full-flavored, succulent, and exceptionally long. It has enough structure to evolve for 4-6 years but will be hard to resist early on. Its prime drinking window will extend from 2014 to 2026.

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2006 (1x600cl)

Vinous (97+)
