Cheval Blanc 1990 (1x75cl)

Decanter (100)

The standout wine of the entire tasting. Powerful, smooth, mouthfilling sweetness, still deeply coloured. You will find it hard to track down this wine on the market today, and even more difficult to avoid paying crazy sums for it, but I can assure you that it stands out for the intense, finely picked-out, fleshy fruit notes of sweet damson and plum unrolling against smoked coffee and liquorice notes. Truffles, tobacco and exotic spices are all here – and it’s hard to imagine how it can have done better. Oh, and Le Petit Cheval in this vintage was 98% Cabernet Franc, so another one to look out for if the beauty of the Cabernet in the main wine is anything to go by. Harvest 11-25 September, 40hl/ha yield. They made 76% first wine and 12% Petit Cheval, with the rest sold off in bulk.

D'Yquem 1990 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

A warm to hot vintage ideal for producing outstanding reds does not necessarily make for a great Sauternes vintage, but in the case of 1990 it did. Dry, warm winds in the autumn contributed to the level of concentration that this wine exhibits. Fortunately, a little rain in late September and early October ensured that botrytis flourished well in the end, the final factor necessary to achieve this extraordinary expression.

Dom Perignon 1990 (9x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The profoundly rich 1990 Dom Perignon is a creamy-textured, full styled offering that loses none of its elegance in spite of its flavor authority. It will improve for 5-10 years, and appears capable of surpassing the fabulous 1985 and 1982. It seems obvious that the quality of the 1990 Champagne vintage is going to be remarkable, and the world-wide demand will be unprecedented. The message - buy them now!

Glencadam (Gordon & MacPhail) Highland Single Malt Connoisseurs Choice 29YO Refill Bourbon Barrel 1991 (1x70cl)

This fabulous single cask bottling from the Glencadam distillery was bottled in January of this year, just before its 30th birthday. Clearly bottlers Gordon & MacPhail are irreverent when it comes to age statements - a whisky is ready when its ready, regardless of how much more a 30-Year-Old could command on the market. A testament to their cask management and decision making this cask-strength offering is a superb snapshot of the quality of this formerly underrated Highland Single Malt which at last is garnering the attention it deserves. Natural colour, not chill-filtered & cask strength at 53.9%.

Appearance: Bright polished brass, remarkably pure for the age.

Nose: Citrus peel and honeycomb aromas lead to soft, brown sugar. Subtle nutty notes combine with sweet banana and green apple.

Taste: Sweet flavours of coconut courtesy of the lengthy period in American oak give way to milk chocolate and malted cereal. A hint of soft herbal notes come to the fore.

Finish: A medium and sweet finish with lingering orchard fruit and warming spices.

Margaux 1990 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

The 1990 Chateau Margaux has turned into a sensational wine that eclipses both the 1988 and 1989...and then some. It has a gorgeous, ethereal bouquet with sumptuous red berry fruit, leather, camphor and licorice—it is the kind of nose in which you just immerse yourself. Is there a hint of brettanomyces here? If there is, I don't really care. The palate is soft and sensual with incredible depth. Fleshy and corpulent for Chateau Margaux, and yet surfeit with breeding and finesse, there are layers or red fruit, kirsch, sage and fig, later tobacco and cloves. I feel that this 1990 Château Margaux is at its peak and yet the harmony, the sheer swagger of this wine just wins you over. Magnificent. Tasted May 2016.

Inc. VAT: £180.00
1991

North British (Signatory) Lowland Single Grain Cask Strength Refill Sherry Butt 28YO 1991 (1x70cl) There are few spirits in this world so satisfyingly decadent and easy to enjoy than a well-matured, heavily-sherried Single Grain Whisky. This 1991 distillation from the North British Distillery in Edinburgh shows all the intense hedonistic delights we have come to expect of top notch whiskies of this class. On the nose you get the clear stamp of the sherry, perhaps even some PX-reminiscent prune notes. The oak comes through almost evoking a svelte old Cognac or Armagnac while the palate shows beautiful cocoa powder, baking spice and, oh my... is that jasmine? A phenomenal 283 bottles were filled just this March at cask strength.

Terlano Pinot Bianco Rarita 1991 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

What can I say? This is a stunning wine. You pay dearly for it, but the 1991 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Rarity is precious indeed. This is the winery's historic blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that has been produced since the founding of the winery in 1893. This special selection of fruit results in a mere 3,340 bottles, and you'll recognize them by the heavy metal plate that serves as a front label. This wine has magically defied the years as it presents a succession of pure and beautiful aromas that underline the impressive quality of the primary fruit. Tertiary notes (and they are surprisingly subtle) come forward in terms of mineral, ash and crushed flint. The complexity soars to the stratosphere. It's impossible to assign a drinking window to a wine that seems to have not aged at all since 1991.
