James Suckling (99)

A great example of a 2021 from a district of southern Napa that often produces the coolest, most supple cabernets. So dense yet silky and elegant. Graphite, iron, seashell and espresso aromas meet super-concentrated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and cocoa, all wrapped in extra-fine tannins that structure it for long aging without being at all harsh to sip now. Fresh and balanced. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

In contrast, the 2021 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is more masculine and feral, with ripe black fruits, cracked black pepper, leather, iron, and spring flowers, and a certain bloody character developing with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has a similar level of polish but is a touch more concentrated and lengthy on the palate, with ripe, building tannins and awesome length. Drink this spectacular Syrah over the coming 10-12 years.

The 2020 Chardonnay Kokoro is a selection made by Lato and comes from the single vineyards. Aged 16 months in 60% new French oak, it reveals a lighter gold hue to go with an incredibly pure and precise nose of stone fruits, honeyed minerality, brioche, and hints of baking spices. Riveting on the palate, with medium to full body and bright yet integrated acidity, it's balanced, has a distinct sense of minerality, and a great, great finish. It's up with the crème de la crème in the vintage.

"Our best wine," says Pedro Parra and it's hard to disagree that it's an outstanding Itata Valley red, demonstrating that the region can produce some of Chile's finest wines. Red granite soils with a little clay are the source of this dense, complex, layered, ferrous Cinsault, showing tapenade, plum and black cherry flavours and a sinewy finsih.

The single-vineyard Cinsault 2021 Newk was named for musician Sonny Rollins Newk, for Parra, the wildest jazz musician of recent times. He says he finds the wine wild, full of energy and minerality. It was produced with grapes from an old vineyard in Guarilihue that is worked by horse, from vines planted on decomposed and rocky granite soils with some iron and a sandy and silty texture. It fermented with 100% full clusters after four or five days with native yeasts and a total maceration time of 55 days, then the wine matured in an oak vat for 11 months. It has 13.5% alcohol and is austere and sharp, mineral and stony. It's a bit reductive and opens up to notes of fresh blood and iodine, a little Gonon with that herbal side. The palate is phenomenal; it's deep and has grip and is mineral and intense with energy, direct and not shy. Superb. 1,537 bottles were filled in February 2022. This has a strong personality and feels very complete.

The 2022 Vinista hails from four vineyards, two planted on granite in Guarilihue and two on dark, sandy volcanic soils in Ñipas. It opens with a highly floral and slightly medicinal nose that introduces a soft, delicate palate with a higher degree of precision than typically associated with the variety. It concludes with a spry, powdery and perfumed finish. This is a dramatically overperforming and serious expression of País.

The 2020 La Craie was also picked earlier, and the wine achieved lower alcohol (14%) than the 2019 through fermenting the destemmed grapes in their new crylon vats. It matured in used 225-liter barrels for 16 months, the same barrels they have always used from the beginning. It's a less austere expression of LaCraie, more open, aromatic and gentler but keeping the personality, the delicate tannins and the DNA from the place, the large bones with little meat. Great effort for the vintage. 912 bottles were filled in December 2021.

Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2015 Iubileus wants to present Gualtallary through a Malbec, even though there is some Cabernet Franc co-fermented with it. It's expressive and floral, with something earthy, a mixture of red and black fruit and a gentler palate. This is from Gualtallary at 1,300 meters in altitude, from 11-year-old vines on alluvial soils where the boulders are covered with calcium carbonate. The Malbec fermented in rolling barrels and the Cabernet Franc in open-top barrels. It matured in used barriques for 16 months. It's nuanced and floral, harmonious and terribly balanced. It's powerful and concentrated but with acidity and freshness. 2015 shows the power of Malbec but only within the right context; if isolated, it would be really subtle, elegant and fragrant. This is simply superb. 1,020 bottles were filled unfiltered in September 2016.

North America is somewhat difficult to pigeonhole – though technically ‘new world’, it is In the Northern Hemisphere, and the wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings with old-world structure can all be found, though if anything is lacking by comparison it is consistency. South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.
